Well, step one is to get far away from Boston or any other city of "significance". Maybe swing by Devil's Tower (check out the prairie dog colony while there), Grand Canyon, Yellowstone, Grand Tetons, Redwoods, and there are some really looooooooong kick ass dirt roads through New Mexico and one connecting California to Nevada heading into Pyramid Lake. Take the coastal scenic highway up from Redwoods into Washington and see the Hoh rainforest, then check out San Juan Island.

I mean the biggest things I'm thinking about are Yellowstone and the Grand Canyon as the staples of US, pretty far apart tho. What's the best and cheapest way to travel around btw?

They are the best at traveling in the us and canada out of all the foreigners i have met except the germans with their overlanding rigs but i am sure you do not have the cash for that

Or, I should have included, get bus tickets and otherwise hike. If you were hiking you could spend the entire time at Yellowstone and it be worth it, easily. It sounds to me like you have zero plan viability at this point.

Shit anon I thought you were doing a summer long road trip

In that case pick a region to visit and visit 3-4 highlights. Especially if you're going to be /out/ing you need to spend time to get away from the crowds, otherwise you're no worse than pic related

You can do:
>Utah's big 5 (zion, bryce, capitol, canyonlands, arches)
>grand canyon + monument valley + glen canyon
>yellowstone + grand titties + craters of the moon + glacier np
>california: death valley + sierras + yosemite
>great plains: badlands NP + black hills + corn palace SD + bighorn forest

With only a week and a half best bet is to fly out, rent a car, and fly out elsewhere. Just pick out a region that most interests you and take the time to do some backcountry overnights, otherwise you might as well go to an amusement park

Would you take one week to see all of europe?
The united states is basically about 30 countries. Fly into a city in the west and rent a van .
I dont know why anyone would try to do a roadtip in a week and a half.

Outside of cities, things are all so far apart that you need to rent cars, esp when you want to see as much as possible. You can save a lot of money reserving spots at campgrounds. It would just be a quick trip to walmart for supplies. Also, trucker gas stations have showers.

I'm sorry man, you're gonna have to re-evaluate this plan. Even if you just sat your ass in a car and road tripped Boston to LA, you'd only have time to stop and see things for like a couple hours each day. It wouldn't be that fun and your stories would amount to "Yeah went to America, it's just a big interstate". You should really just pick out 3 or 4 destinations you want to see on the East Coast and make a few 2 or 3 day trips out of those. If you want to go full /out/ist, maybe fly into Denver and rent a car to some of the sites you're interested in.

Yeah I will, It's just I think it might be difficult to ever go to the US again and it's basically the only time I have. You I'll be in NH working for like 3 months and I can travel maybe like 2 weeks at most after that. I want to get the most out of it, but I sometimes forget just how huge US is. I'll def do what You anons say in terms of focusing on just a handful of things.

The east coast is a lot more densely developed and it's easier to get around because there's more trains, buses, public transit etc. The farther west you go, the more you're going to need a vehicle of some kind. Thst being said if you want to get out of the Northeast and explore, domestic flights can be surprisingly cheap. If you want to explore the Southwest, both Pheonix and Salt Lake City are major hub airports, so you can get a cheap flights and a rental car/van. There's massive chunks of public land throughout the Western states that are completely free to camp on, too.

Rental companies frequently need to move their fleets around based on seasonal demand or maintenance/decommissioning. You can seriously get an RV for $1/night for a week or two if you agree to pick it up in City A and drop it off in City B by a certain date. Google "RV relocation deals"
This also applies to standard rental cars as well.

I did a 2 week drive across the country a couple years back and it was pretty stupid in retrospect. You absolutely can go across the country and back in that time but you'll be rushed and you'll miss a lot. Pick three things you really want to see and spend time at and make sure your route crosses them. Anything else you do is a bonus, but prioritize those three things.
