Really though it all depends on your own psyche, time commitment, and where/what kind of climbing you're doing. Grades are just guides, and can vary based on height/body type.
Get familiar with all types of holds and maneuvers, and set a goal for yourself.

How much does height play a role in climbing/bouldering?
I'm 5'8 manlet and it seems that my 6'+ friends have it so fucking easy

Shortness has some subtle benefits- cramped routes/moves are easier, and it's easier to get higher strength/weight ratio. Some problems are a hell of a lot easier if you can make a certain reach though, no way around it

not that much. top climbers are a range of heights, ashima is like 5 ft. for indoor climbing it seems more important, sometimes you just cannot reach a hold directly like a tall person. sometimes they skip entire sequences of moves. in the outdoors you can be more versatile

Usually I always was in situation where I could just jump out, but today I was in a situation where I couldn't really jump/move without feeling like I would slipping and fall in a non-controlled way

The trick is to not get in that position. Chances are high you just did it wrong. If there is no other way to solve the problem then just don't do it. There is no point in injuring yourself because of one stupid little problem. Just leave and do a different problem instead, one that was set by a routesetter with more brain cells. Training is not the place where you should get injured.

the only way to get better at falling is to fall. no way around it. start climbing shit way too hard so you blow off near the ground. especially overhanging stuff, so you flatback it a few times and realize you'll survive.

First Climb in America

1607 - Francis Bacon, Samuel D' Champlain, David Teniers, and Nicolas Poussin.

Climbed the approach to a base point and carved the entire wall with images of a Helm, Shield, Sword, and Guardian Knight.

Epic views, and overlooks, with base area for camping after a steep approach hike taking about 45-60 minutes

The bolts are in and ready to be followed.

Intense seeing the finish in a cave with a sort of shrine made inside.

Knights of Christ in Vermont with the Order of the Helm.

The Guardian Knight watches over the Approach Climb which is mixed and has a base anchor and three bolts installed. Kinda runout but its a basic 5.5 R/X if you stick to the rock steps they carved.

You will find a couple of iron pegs that were left cut off when they were erecting their scaffolding.

Mostly an artistic facade overlooking the climb, to show their order was here to establish New France, these artists accompanied the men through the journey to the end of their explorations where they had mapped out the area for future travelers but also they created a majestic assortment of incredible rock carvings to show what was placed in the Vault.

The end of the journey up to the base of the climb meets face to face with these huge carvings with the Sword in the Stone, a two handed broadsword, before the climb up.

There are marks all around the area as well as some incredible mixed routes that are in the area.

Second Pitch leads up the crack and extends out the roof on thin nuts and hexes, with tri cams placed in some

The pitch traverses out across the undercling, with a small edge, and even smaller smears for footing on edges and knobs.

The pitch over the roof is even harder and is one of the cruxes on the route, pushing the grade to a high 5.11 probably c/d

Two traversing bolts to the hanging belay with chains and rap anchors is the final set of moves.

The lowering point then takes you down right over the entrance of the vault opening shaped like a keyhole.

This will allow you to make an entry with both people, and go inside.

Take care of loose rock walls, floor, and stuff growing inside. BIG spiders as well

May one day become a UNESCO World Heritage Foundation

Final route to ceiling from second pitch has not been bolted but is less than vertical to vertical and overhanging through two more pitches of face/crack climbing.

Look forward to hearing more about this place.

FB at the bottom of the cliff is signature of Francis Bacon as first ascent.

Im bouldering outdoors for the first time and have some questions. Please post any other tips about how to approach a rock before climbing it.

1. Do you chalk holds before climbing? If so, how exactly do you apply chalk to the holds? Heard you can use a wet towel or sock, but don't know what to make of it.
2. How to deal with wet or damp holds?
3. Is there a difference to brushing rock as uposed to indoor holds? Asking because im not expecting them to be greasy or overused, which is why i brush indoors.
3. Best way to remove chalk from rock after climbing?

You chalk your hands not the holds.

If you need extra chalk on your way up either wear your chalk bag or get a decent amount on your hands then slap your thighs to deposit some chalk onto them.

Sometimes you have to clean up holds, use a brush that's only going to remove chalk and dirt, not something with stiff enough bristles that will damage the rock.

Brush chalk off the holds once you're done, especially if you left tick marks.

Note that this is only for young baby western red sandstone. Southeast sandstone is over 300 million years old and the only thing that'll break if you climb on it while wet is your bones when you slip off

1. and 2. The only reason to chalk holds is if they are wet or if you need a visual guide to where you want to grab. For wet situations bring some tampons too. If you are there for a few days you might also be able lead the water away from holds with little tinfoil contraptions. But that is probably too much effort for anything but big projects.

It is a good idea to clean a route/boulder with a brush once when you get there. Just top rope for that.

3. Yeah, don't overdo it. You might make them less sharp (lowers difficulty) or your might break them (makes it harder or impossible).

4. Just brush it off. You can pour water on it, but the next guy really won't be happy about that.

Font is the 'strong' type of sandstone, but you still shouldn't climb it when wet.

There are some areas that dry quick though, look it up.

ain't that bad desu. I don't even notice the harness while I climb (I think that's the point) and the gear loops are fuckhuge for trad racks. I've easily had a double rack on there with room to spare. My only gripe is I wish I had *one* more gear loops for anchor stuff/random shit. Maybe I'm just an idiot and not using my body enough for slinging a quad anchor or whatever. I guess I'll figure it out in time, for now it works and it works well for whatever I want to do.

I'm not sure what you mean, I've only just gotten into climbing outdoors. Pic related my second climb, I've just been using a basic anchor system so far but was looking into the quad because it seems like that's the method you should use if you're wanting to climb off to the side of your anchor.

cordalette is thin (5-7mm) RATED rope. climbing shops sell it by the foot. i carry 30' of 6mm, and tie it into a loop with a double fisherman's knot. then it's real easy to arrange so the load is evenly distributed on each anchor point. if i get a chance tonight i'll mock it up in my living room and take some pics. but it'll be at least 7 or 8 hours until i'm able to.

Yes, that works. With dedicated fall training it is often suggested to take a fall after each quickdraw you clip in. How much that helps you is subjective. I did it for quite some time and am still fucking afraid of heights and falling but fighting it got easier. Good thing you can sell the shaking as physically struggling instead of fear.
I wish I could get rid of it though, feels like it is the cause for the biggest risks I take. Doing shit on the tiny 8 m overhang in my local gym terrifies me to the point where I become almost unfunctional. Trying to fit a cam into some unstable brittle sandstone doesn't really feel any worse. Makes it very hard to see the nuance between things you can and things you probably shouldn't do.

you should avoid brushing chalk off holds desu if you care about preserving the rock. the chalk is abrasive so it removes more material than brushing alone. hitting the holds with a towel seems to work the best for me

that being said there's only so much you can do with porous rocks like limestone and sandstone as any chalk on the surface when it rains will be absorbed and stain the rock white.

before I was failing because I didn't have enough forearms strength but at least I could climb until tired.

climbed today in the afternoon at Red Rocks. took a friend up Senior Moment (5.5 T) and then did Chocolate Tranquility Fountain (5.7 T). Both great climbs. Need to get better at reading routes, I think I went off route a little bit at the top of both routes. All was well though, friend couldn't make it up CTF, but I finished it and did the walkoff. Shuteye is extremely worth going to and not crowded but you will need to rent a 4wheel drive vehicle.

I understand the spirit of the rule but having to double check every single foot placement to make sure you won’t accidentally hit a Forbidden Hold or (in the case pf the signs) flag your foot on the wrong completely flat surface is retarded. Hachioji was an olympic qualifying event, it’s fucking embarrassing that they couldn’t provide a wall without shit you’re not supposed to step on. It can’t be that hard to engineer an anchor that’s flush with the wall or something.

Just stretch regularly. That's something you should do anyway. Getting flexible takes time though, that's not something you can do in a few weeks. You might just have to skip this one and come back in a year or two.

It might help if you train your core so you are better at holding tension in weird positions, that's usually half of the trick for doing awkward moves.

Take your time and rest, rushing will only prolong the healing. Work on conditioning and flexibility in the mean time. I've recently(past 6 months) been recovering from some tendinitis and hitting the bicycle hard for the cardio has really made those long approaches even at high altitude just a breeze. Sucks not climbing or climbing very easy grades to build back but there's really no other way, I've been humbled and learned some key humility.

1. Buy shoes that are tight, but not so tight that you can't stay in them for an hour. If you have to take off your shoes all the time then you waste time on the wall.
2. Don't do full crimp. Do open hand crimp or half crimp. (in pic do A or B, but not C). You will just get injured for no good reason. If you can't hold something without full crimp yet, then just do something else instead.
3. Don't always jump down from full height, your back and knees will thank you.
4. Stretch and warm up before climbing
5. Stay close to the wall
6. Don't overgrip holds, just use as much strength as necessary
7. In overhangs try and keep your upper body parallel to the wall, don't let your ass hang out.
8. The fastest way to improve is to spend more time on the wall. Sometimes it's better to do many comfortable boulders than struggle with one harder one for an hour.

You will get injured using full crimp, if you never train it and then all of a sudden try to use it. Full crimp is great if you have really small crimps that are slopey or hard to hold on to - this doesn't mean that you would need to grip insanely hard, but putting the thumb over makes it more secure when otherwise your fingers would slide off. The pressure doesn't have to be high, it's just technique.

It's more difficult at the lower grades, but it gets better. At leavenworth I can do a several V5s, and at my gym I've only done a few V6s (set by an asian guy the same height as myself). I went to a gym in Seoul and was doing V7s and flashing V6s but I'm sure the gym just grades hella easy. But I make jokes to my wife they just set for my height because most Koreans are short although still taller than myself. I'm only 5'6".

I'll say I've found very few problems where height was my limit rather than finger strength.

I couldn't seriously break V5 until I started doing outdoors. Now I'm stuck at V6 indoors and haven't got any V6 outdoors, but I feel next spring/summer will be my first V6 in Leavenworth. Also, I took a solid 6 month break (herniated disk unrelated to climbing) which probably let my hands heal, so my grip feels the best it ever has and my forearms took about two months to where I could comfortably do V5 again and project V6 outdoor. My gym doesn't have a hangboard but that will get you the best gains and a lot of asians with coaches train that way. I *just* climb but it's fine as I'm not trying to compete. I got to V4 in a year too, but I hit the common V5 wall back then.

It's probably overall technique. There's nothing *wrong* with hangboarding if you do it safely, but if you don't improve your technique you'll just get stuck whenever you meet a fancy footwork move

Western climbers will say it will give you injuries but it's a fact that asian countries are more comp oriented than "outdoor experience" and they incorporate hangboards early on in the training cycle. Nice job on peaches. I remember top roping that and behind amazed that anyone could lead it.

First trip to the gunks was a success, we eased in with two three pitch routes, Arch 5.5, and Maria 5.6+. The latter felt like a red rocks 5.8.
Next time we're going to amp it up a bit and try the mega classic High Exposure and CCK.

Practice climbs above your grade at the gym, start with overhanging routes where the falls are generally safer. Tell your belayer you're more than likely going to take a fall and have them be ready for a catch. Commit to the climb, make that move, go for that clip, take the fall like a champ. Keep doing this until you realise that falling isn't really a big deal. Do the same on vertical walls. You typically have enough time to adjust your feet/hands and brace for the impact of a fall, most of the fear comes from thinking you're going to skin off a kneecap in my experience, but that's rarely the case.

Hard to say, if it's on the material and not the rubber toe patch you'll probably be fine (unless it's a severe hot spot that hurts right when you put them on, that's a bigger gamble). Yep it's hard weighing anything. Look up the competitors at your height and they're in the 150s/160s. I both powerlift and climb and weigh 170 despite being 5'6 but I can diddly over 450lbs. I'd have to cut to the 130s/140s to be competitive which isn't possible without losing muscle mass.

Ofcourse at my weight V10 outdoors should still be possible if I keep at it.

Thoughts on stealth c4 vs onyxx rubber? Getting my TC Pros resoled. These are my all-day multipitch shoes with a relaxed fit, so I figured c4 would make more sense since I'm not climbing tiny edges where the onyxx might be better.

Most important factors are the character of the rock and an accurate assessment of your own abilities, stamina being chief among those in free solo.

Crumbly, aerated igneous is bad juju. Laminar metamorphic is breddy gud as long as it's strong enough. Like any other manner of climbing, vertical fissures are your friend.

Don't blame me if you die. As some other Anon (quite rightly) pointed out earlier, this is a fucking stupid thing to do (thanks, Capt. Obvious). Start small. Be sure of your abilities. And for the love of God, don't get stuck ~15 M up by a sudden rain shower like a dumbass.

Not that I know anyone who's done that or anything...

I just started climbing about 4 weeks ago. Since then I've been going to the climbing gym about 4 times a week for 3-4 hours. Over the last week I've noticed my elbows are getting very sore and one of my fingers is swollen and tender at the joint. Am I going too much? If not what am I doing wrong? does your gym have a weight room? if it does replace at least 1 day/week of climbing with weight training, focusing on pushing (bench press, overhead press, dips, etc) to balance all the pulling you do climbing.

Some elbow/bicep soreness is common as a noob, the kind that is heavy immediately after your sesh and fades. If it hangs around for a long time and feels painful rather than just like sore muscle, you gotta rest it.

Your fingers should never be swollen and painful, maybe just a little raw and red after a hard sesh but that’s it.

What does your warmup look like?

It's common for beginners to have some issues, the body can take time to adapt but if you do things properly you should be able to climb 2-3 times a week once you are ~1month or so into it.

I used to climb 3 times per week. But then I had a problem with my hamstring now my middle fingers keep complaining. Mostly bouldering, but once per month or so lead climbing. Recently got into font 6ish territory for bouldering and UIAA 6 or 7 for lead. Hall grades though, so take that with a pinch of salt.

For warmup I usually stretch and then slowly climb one or two easy boulders all the way up and then back down to the start holds. I avoid small crimps due to the tendon issues, but I usually never do full crimp grips anyway. I do a lot of overhang and roof climbing recently. Those tend to have juggier holds while still being challenging.

I think you could look for a better warmup and I hope the stretches you do are dynamic stretches.
You need to make sure blood is flowing properly in your finges, try tendon glides, lightweight barbell finger rolls, rice bucket. These are also good to promote recovery on off days as long as you keep it light.

I don't know, I improved a lot over a short time. I've started climbing regularly like 8 months ago. It feels like my tendons haven't caught up. But maybe I'm just a pussy about it.

When climbing does it hurt even on big jugs or slopers?

as for stretching the consensus is that static stretching is not good to warm up, keep that when cooling down/relaxing.
dynamic stretching is fine.

Usually you want to warmup "generally" with a couple of minutes cardio, (or walking uphill carrying pads)
then more specifically; I like this approach : (as in just focus on each articulation and try to warm things around it, I complete that with an elastic band)

And finally you can be sport specific and actually boulder on something easy.

Also, do tendon glides to get some blood properly flowing in your fingers, this shit had helped me a lot, I usually do it while walking to the boulders.
