Got my first hiking stove, picked up some gas and expected a pretty straight forward ordeal, but the damn cover won't come off.

What do I do out?

When they get stuck I take a drill bit by hand and make a little indent in the center, then I leverage a screwdriver into that and pop it out. Almost always works.

Well, I've never seen that. It does look that it was meant to be unscrewed, but using/requiring a tool is contrary to my paradigm. As noted above, the brands I've bought and used (Primus, MSR and knockoffs) have a pull tab that would split the cap an it just falls away. FYI, the threaded portion is called a Lindel valve and should self seal when unscrewed even with remaining contents.

Most people who use stuff that requires pressurized gas tanks have a small tool set designed specifically around what those various containers need. Pin spanners are common for that. There are also hook spanners like this.

The reason such tools are required is to prevent tampering by children while also resisting being unscrewed during transportation.

This is probably the old model.
You can still find them in some stores.
They are meant to be punctured when fitted to a primus or Coleman apparatus.
They are no longer legal to sell in many countries, due to the failure to align it correctly while connecting it to the apparatus of choice, will either freeze your fingers off or cause an explosion.

If you can't screw it off, you should return it.

You can predict this for yourself pretty easily. Just remember the number of carbons:

methane - 1
ethane - 2
propane - 3
butane - 4

MEPB

Most of the weight of the molecule is additional carbons.

Temperature is directly proportional to the average kinetic energy of each molecule (roughly speaking), so for a given temperature, the lighter molecules are going to be moving faster.

The faster they're moving, the more tendency they have to go into a gas phase.

Therefore, methane > ethane > propane > butane for cold environments.
