Long story short, I am going to be homeless soon. I've come to the realization that I'd rather camp permanently somewhere than deal with scavenging the city streets and deal with the ill intentions of modern man.

What part of North America offers the best environment to survive in? I've already ruled out Northeastern USA and the Midwest due to the brutal winters.

Would the Pacific Northwest be optimal?

imo Pacific Northwest or mid-atlantic coast... say deleware/maryland area... although there isn't as much innawoods to hide in as there would be in WA/OR/NorCA

As far as I understand it you can legally live in Yellowstone provided that you live in a tent and that you occasionally pick up and move to another area of the park every so often.

Northern california within 50 miles of the coast, or Southern Oregon

Build a small shelter out in a valley in the national forest, get a mountain bike (or ideally a dual-sport motorbike) for transportation, and use that as home base.

The police here are brutal power tripping faggots when it comes to vagrancy, and the general population is oversissified and afraid of anything they consider to be out of the ordinary that they will call the police on you for just looking like a "street person"

Also there are a lot of farmers here that do not want people on their land. You could probably get by in rural Pennsylvania, though.

Have you read David Henry Thoureau? This guy does exctly what you're planning to do on iddle XIX century. Go and look for his diary so you can have an Idea of what to do.

A good resource is living nex to a pound, lake or sea. Fishing is easier than hunting.

Walden is a good account of his philosophy of solitude on a mental level, but he had plenty of help on the physical level. He grew beans and traded villagers for some other food sure, but he also had his literary friends send him food and other resources. He wasn't entirely self-sufficient. Walden isn't a book for the resourceful solitary homesteader, it's just a book for the solitary. Nevertheless it's a good book, although a bit clunky at times and perhaps he goes into too much description on unimportant things, but that's just what the Romantics did.

Also he built his hut for pennies back then. It came out to like $26 just to build the thing, which in 19th century money equated to a few months rent, as he puts it. It's more expensive now, especially land.

He did process his own lumber though, so that surely saved him a lot. At the price of more labor of course, but time matters little when you've got all the time in the world. (Though it's probably illegal now.)
