Hello /out/. I plan on buying some acres of forest in the United States and building a log cabin, and am trying to survive indefinitely.

What are some general tips you guys have? I have around four years of prep time.

go make some friends and talk to some girls or something. Take up a hobby or join some clubs. You still have time. We, on the other hand, are too late to be saved, but you are still young.

Without experience you'll maybe prep one log a day- cut, move, strip, notch, stack- So two months of working your ass off ALL day just to get a 20'x20' frame built.
Depending on where you're at, minimum $10,000 for well and septic, possibly as high as $50,000, possibly not able to hit the water table at all.
$5,000 for a cheap solar setup but you'll still have to chop wood an entire day once a week for cooking and heating.

Are you wanting to live totally off the grid? like no reliance on city utilities? If not you can still find a place where you can get a well dug. then get a septic tank. an indoor toilet and sink will be a gamechanger. you can even have a water heater if you got solar power. no more shitting in the woods during winter. no more boiling water.

If this is gonna be your forever home, and you have never built a cabin then you are guaranteed to fuck up a lot of stuff. may be better to hire someone to come in and help you or just do it for you. There's a lot to think of when you are doing this all on your own. What type of roof, insulation, foundation, windows, etc.
