What is /out/ opinion on folding shovels? Are they usefull? What are the best folding shovels?

99/100 I carry this orange Black&Decker shovel for pooping

So yea, great small shovel for gardening that can also be used as a hoe, imo pretty overkill for normal /out/

Maybe for clearing snow from the ground or digging a dakota fire hole, other than that i cant think of an use for them. I did buy a non foldable one thinking ill find a use for it, never did. It's now my moms favorite gardening shovel.

I have a sog one I got for like $20 CAD ten years ago. It lives in the trunk of my car most of the time. It has dug countless cat holes and got me out of a bad snowdrift. I find it a bit bulky for longer backpacking trips but it's fine for a weekend outing. I have no idea why it has the stupid pick and saw blade parts both are essentially useless.

A lot of the places I go the soil is filled with stones and gravel-sized rocks. Sometimes I can just uproot a rock, shit under it, and put it back. Otherwise, it is go shovel or go home.

I'd rather have a small fixed shovel, I tried a folding spade for digging firepits and shitting holes but I was having with roots. The smart thing to do would be to bring a small fixed trowel but going out is about enjoying yourself and I find the shovel to be more convenient.

this. I will bring a shovel if i am camping with multiple people and the supplies can be distributed evenly, but camping solo, the thing gets heavy quick, and you'll only use it to dig a hole fire and maybe a trench around your tent. Nothing that couldn't be done by hand with some extra effort.

Real US made folding shovels that are military issue are fucking great, not necessary for normal camping but handy if you like like to dig a bit like I do for various things. Fire pits, shit pits, digging holes for branches i'm roping together to make something.
