Low rise trunk 100%. Tried and tested with different things for years and now this is what I settle on. Perfect in cold weather, and fantastic in a hot climate too. Also really makes my junk look supple and heavy when I'm wearing my skinny jeans out on the weekend.

This might be dumb but I ordered some "bulge enhancing" male g-strings from Amazon to try out. My thinking is that they'll keep the package supported and nice and cool away from the body, and otherwise they're like being commando, plus they're so tiny that you can carry a whole week of fresh underwear in the size and weight of one pair of spare boxers. I ordered a few different brands to try, first delivery should be today and I'll see if they're dumb or not.

Your thinking is on track but the g-string part is the flaw. The string up you crack is gonna chaffe your cheeks raw. Look into jockstrap style instead. The straps going around your cheeks and not in between should prevent this
