If it was a legit collapse.. I think watches would still be valuable, people always wanna know the time, especially if the watch has a date function. Supplies of batteries would run out after a while for quartz pieces, but mechanical watches could be kept running for a long time.

Bottlecaps made sense in the original Fallout because they were backed by water. Thus they only made sense within the context of the first game. By the time of Fallout 2 bottlecaps are worthless, being superceded by minted coinage backed by gold. Bethesda brought back bottlecaps for Fallout 3 with zero context just for the sake of brand recognition.
Autistic post but I just felt like pointing out that a currency backed by some sort of essential commodity is one way to go.

Ultimately, it depends on how deep we get, but the only actual 'currency' will be non-iodized salt. Anything can be traded, but salt would be the only thing that would universally be recognized as valuable in a world where hyponatremia would be a common major illness, food would need to be preserved over long periods of time, and most food that's still available would be raw vegetables and fresh meat and thus need seasoning, plus it doesn't spoil, travels well, and is easy to confirm as authentic. It would probably be a while before it really appreciates, but it'd be the one thing I would be willing to accept in trade, no questions asked.

Corona has made me truly appreciate how smart Mormans are about prepping. A year's worth of food, means to sterilize water and a family large enough to both farm land and defend the home are considered the minimum standard, and the vast majority of them are guarding the largest inland source of salt from the rest of us.

A lot of GMO seeds are spliced in such a way that they cannot be propagated or require a certain activating agent, or will only reproduce for a generation or two so that farmers are dependent on seed distributors in the long run. I am not sure how you would prove such a thing but if you could show in some way that what you are offering are heirloom, all natty seeds I would imagine that would make them infinitely more valuable as a commodity.

Now as far as post societal breakdown economy it would be straight barter. The only thing resembling any currency might be precious metals and minerals, and that's really only because of their ties to the old world.

Figure 10 pounds/chick for the first 10 weeks then 1-1.25 pounds/bird/week after that. This can be supplemented by just about anything, and the richer the forage the less feed they will need. Depending on the strain that seems reasonable although you are paying to much for feed, I pay $9/50lbs from the local feed company, name brand feeds are a ripoff. The 5 weeks seems a bit young to me but I know there are some real fast strains out there now. I haven't raised meat birds since I was in 4h but we always raised them for 6-8 weeks. If you are just looking for meat I might suggest rabbits, a trio of rabbits will produce as much meat in a year as a calf but you have to have the setup. Chickens are easier, but not quite the easiest to grow out if you don't know what your doing. Feeding broilers is a science but there is a lot online to help you out that way. Keep in mind cornish cross don't live long enough to breed, if you want to raise your own then you will need cornish hens and a Plymouth rock cock.

Will probably end up doing the same with the rabbits since it's not legal to sell rabbit meat without a processor's license, but selling live rabbits and offering slaughtering is totally legal. The Chinese and Mexicans probably prefer doing it themselves though; keeps the meat fresher and there's no stigma attached to it like there is in white American culture. I've got to respect that.

In the USA this puts conservative estimates at 1 trillion firearms. With well over 100 times that amount in ammo for that. So what do you think is going to happen in 10-15 years that will destroy that? Further more, a number of gun owners have invested the less than $500 needed to set up a reloading press. Even further than that, there exists multiple blackpowder firearms that can take smokeless and by extension can use black powder which can be made from very few materials. Nah, I'm the guy that spent four years in the woods. I still use baking soda as toothpaste and deodorant, I can't imagine table salt being all that different, just more easily available. Wood ash doesn't burn your skin, it's barely strong enough to get fish oil off your hands after a couple of washes.

You do know how soap is made right? The hydroxide in wood ash is mainly potassium hydroxide which when used in soapmaking yields a softer soap more like a gel but will still saponify the oils, when used as a hand cleaner it will partially saponify hydrophobic materials on the skin allowing it to act as a crude soap and more importantly will allow the material to be removed with water and when coupled with the charcoal abrasives makes a decent substitute to soap for cleaning. Hell lye isn't even really that dangerous, especially in the concentrations you will be dealing with. It's only a concern if wet ash is left on the skin for prolonged periods but since you are using it to wash your fucking hands that's not really a concern. There is a shitload of material out there on using ash to scrub up, but you can try it yourself to try it. It will dry your skin more than a traditional soap but you're not going to get a caustic burn from it. Have you really never handled ash before? This is fucking /out/ for christ's sake, how are you this ignorant of basic materials that damn near everyone has had hands on experience with?

Same hand after washing ash off the best could. Please note that in this case I did wash my hands throughly with soap and water afterwards because ashes and cold water from the barn were not enough to remove all of the marine grease and it instead formed an emulsion of ash grease and water that I felt necessary to remove before it did lead to a caustic burn. Should you find yourself in this situation warmer water and maybe a wash rag will significantly help to the grease. I will post the same hand tomorrow to show it is free of any alkali burns.

Just like in the process of making lye soap by mixing it with fat, it should be impossible to cause a caustic burn as long as there's a lipid present to emulsify, because the lipid will neutralize the lye. Just caking damp ashes on clean hands would probably cause burns, but after cleaning fish I find it takes a few ash washes to get all the oil off.

In a world where we have no soap you would be washing your hands far less, I wash my hands several times a day, but I also have lots of soap. If it comes down to washing hands exclusively with ash you would wash far less because it will dry the fuck out of your hands, but it will get them clean after you shit or before a meal. Either way the point is that the short term exposure to wood ash is not sufficient to cause a hydroxide burn. We will have results positive or not tomorrow.

I washed it off due to an abondance of caution due to my concerns about the synthetic grease with trapped extremely small quantities of ash and water in it being more inert than my skin, but mainly because the ash did not completely remove the grease and I don't really like getting grease all over everything I touch. You seem to get stuck on the part where you wash the ash off. It's fine. And no one is saying ash is as good as soap, we are discussing using ash in situations where soap unavailable. Absolutely you should, will a handfull of ash used to scrub and rinse relatively quickly off your hands cause any problems? Wood ash is less than 10% KOH, the amount needed to scrub is so small (considerably less than I had in my hand in fact, most of it just got dumped into the water without ever contacting my skin) that you are at no risk from the hydroxide.

Slavic release, per family tradition. Grip the bow with opposite fingers, twist draw hand, and the bow moves before the arrow would need to curve. I've been trying thumb release on my left, and can get a less drastic twist with that. Recommend you don't try this on your Olympic grip, English style. Shooting wrong sided will slap your arm. Thumb release works, but wear a glove instead of ring.
2 hour daily practice so I can sleep at night, but my fifth and sixth arrow does miss by the end. (50# is just right. I shot a 30 for a week, was pushing 4 hours before I got tired. May move up for better control, but this is a nice main.) It has only been two months, as an adult, so maybe I slow down in the winter.
