Buffalo NY sucks along with the rest of NYS, NYC is an anchor dragging the rest of the state down. I want to stay up north and like the /out/doors, where should I move? I have also considered moving to Europe (where my grandparents are from)

Hands down the best hiking in WNY has to be the eternal flame. Truly the best, least underwhelming trail out there. Everyone is totally okay with you free-climbing the sides of the ravine too. Not frowned upon at all.

Another NY anon here (Rochester). This area is great. Finger Lakes (good not just for hiking, you've got wineries and lakes), Adirondacks are a reasonable weekend trip, and then all the little gorgeous and trails carved up by rivers.

I mean it's not like Alaska, but it's pretty good desu and if you move looking for a new zip code to give you happiness, you're going to be very disappointed.

I know the area is great but I don't like the direction that NYS is headed and unfortunately Western and Upstate are under the oppressive law of the governor. You're kinda right about that last line as I was looking into a fresh start but its less about happiness and more about going somewhere I would be better off financially, politically and socially.

Was gonna type this. NY has a lot of gorgeous areas if you're willing to go see it. Adirondacks are large enough to hold every national park in its borders with room to spare. Tons of climbable mountains, nature trails that will take you days to traverse, every rock you throw lands in a different lake, NY is a fucking gorgeous state.

That's not even counting how much of the state is technically state forest, so camping is free and largely unrestricted. Seriously you could spend your whole life in NY and not see all of it I think. Only reason you'd need to travel to go /out/ is if you wanted to see something you literally couldn't get in NY like the grand canyons or the ocean, otherwise we've got it all.

It's a fucking shame, honestly. The idea that I can drive 4 1/2 hours away from my home into the middle of nowhere to camp, and wake up to 3 families within viewing distance of me blasting music and leaving trash is such a nightmare. I think if I want peace and quiet im just going to have to backpack, even though I'd much rather have some of the creature comforts I can get from simple hiking trips/regular camping. Letchworth really was disappointing for me too. My friend and I did the entire gorge trail start-end-start and the volume of people was pretty staggering, especially by the trailhead. As we got further away it improved slightly, but there were very few sections where we were truly by ourselves.

The main trails are all going to be pretty crap from what I can tell, but there's a branch of the Finger Lakes Trail that run's though and terminates in Letchworth. I'm considering an overnight of it sometime later this month, but you have to rent out a single lean-to shelter since they don't allow camping anywhere off the trail.

The view at Letchworth is worth the first trip, and after that now I usually just go to Allegany, plenty of good tent spots and trails down there, including North Country which goes into PA and beyond. But there is plenty to see and do in WNY if you look around a bit.

Im in Amherst but my family just moved up to Wheatfield. Put in some effort and this place isnt so bad. I like shooting personally, and there are enough trails to keep busy for the most part. Not to mention I can't leave the pizza and wings.

I've overnighted on the very spot you're talking about. It's very secluded, really nice, and there are raspberry bushes in the meadow with the powerlines. Nah, the OP didn't mention lack of /out/ as one of the reasons he wants to move. While there's decent /out/ here, it's not good enough to put up with all of the other bullshit associated with living here (6+ months of winter, insanely high taxes, low-paying jobs with few exceptions, higher population density compared to more rural states/regions, etc.)

For the most they are, but they have real mountains and actually get more snow on average in some places than NY (even the lake effect snow). With AZ, NM, and UT all having records over 400 in of snow in a single winter (UT having one over 1,000 in) and averages of over 200 inches occur every winter even in droughts. A lot of places out west are colder and snowier than NY in winter, even down south but even more so up north.

The western boundary of the daks is a good 4-5 hours way from Buffalo. Add another two hours two the high peaks. That's a long fucking drive and lots of tolls.
