How do I go camping?

Hey, I've never camped, and I'm not an outdoorsman by any means, but I want to get away from it all for a little bit. What do I need to know?

Can I just get a tent, a sleeping bag, a canteen, and some cans of food, and hike out to the middle of some random woods for a week?

Is it better to go to campsites?
Got any advice?

Yes, until you get the hang of it. Camping in a curated campsite and wilderness camping are two very very different things.

Yeah man. Literally just buy like $500 worth of camping gear from Canadian tire or whatever the American equivalent is and just book a campsite online and go for a week. Most of the stuff will last you years if you take care of it. Picrel is a good guide for beginners, you probably don't need every single item but they're good to have, you'll get use out of them. For sure you need a tent and sleeping bag, cooler full of food/beer (don't forget ice, stove or barbeque of some kind (unless you're good with just cooking meat over a fire), bug spray, clothes, sunscreen, utensils, firewood and plenty of water.

What makes camping fun for you?
You'll get it when you go. Have fun and remember to drink lots of water!

Start off small, don't listen to the faggots that would have you blow $600+ on a hobby that you may not even enjoy. Just get a cheap tent and bag + sleeping mat, bring a cooler with some food, fire starters, and a camp chair, and find a good local campsite accessible by car. You don't need to go on a week long expedition to enjoy being /out/.

I lived in the woods for a little bit and it was sick but I still love driving up to a campsite and hanging out. It's nice being outside even when you can hear cars.

OP make sure to bring some liquor and walk through short trails at safe campsites when the sun goes down. It's the best.

Honestly I just went and did it on my own for the first time and learned from my mistakes as well as minor discomforts, it will teach you more than reading 100 checklists before you go.
My advice would be to just check your sleeping bag/pad/tent before you go and the rest you can fill in later (for one day not too far off the road, of course).

If you have that compulsion to go /out/ you got what you need already, what's important is the friends we make along the way anon :)
Seriously tho, if you actually " want" to be /out/ (as opposed to a tag-along gf for example) you'll have a good time, don't overthink it. Pick a week-end where weather and temp is nice, bad weather is probably the trickiest par t for beginners. Get a loan of a tent (don't buy if you're not sure to do it again, or buy a $5 piece of shit) a sleeping bag, and an extra layer of warm clothes, if everything goes to shit, 2 layers of clothes away from the rain will get you to morrning.
Don't worry about details, routes, planning, etc... if it's your first, the focus is being there and triggering that /out/ feeling.
Just take what you need to sleep, a few sandwiches and booze, eat your sandwiches enjoying the view, get drunk, and wake up dying to do it again. Once you've done that, everything else will fall in place as you go

Not for comfort (hard ground isn't that bad, and if you're drunk enough you won't notice it) but to isolate you from the cold from the ground. If you sleep right on the floor of your tent, you'll be cold in night, especially if you're using some rag-tag quilt.
simple liste
-tent
-sleeping bag/blanket
-floor mat
-etxtra layer (like a hoodie and sweatpants, if you really feel cold, you can put them on under your out clothes, those 2 layers plus whatever shitbag you use, it's impossible you'll be cold if you pick reasonnable weather)
-food (forget gas etc, sandwiches and energy bars will do)
-water (1.5l should do)
-booze or weed if it's your thing
If you don't have a hiking bag, don't buy one yet, use a sports bag (just don't plan on walking to much with something slung over your shoulder sideways) or plastic bag. If your haversack is small, dump the bag in which sleeping bags are often sold. roll your mat into a tube, and slide it in your bag, widen the tube as much you can inside so it becomes the "wall" of your backpack. Stuff your sleeping bag anclothes into the tube and fill the bottom with'em, then dump food, water, etc; on your clothes. The sleeping will fill the space more efficiently like this, and will act as padding for the food and gear on top when you put it down.
also the "tube" can hold stuff even if it sticks out of your pack, that way if you only have a small city back pack you can use it to carry your gear even if it's too small to theoretically hold everything, just tighten the top o the tube with a piece of string and put a plastic bag over it. for a one-nighter it'll do fine

Find a nice spot your can basically drive to, or that's 5min walk from your car.
Take basics; tent, something to cook on or make fire, some food beer and weed for a night, first aid kit, stay the night and enjoy.
During the trip, write down anything you wish you had brought with you.
Write down stuff you brought but didn't need.

Next time, camp somewhere a bit more remote.
Make your trips gradually longer and further out until your doing a week in the middle of nowhere.

Camping requires very little. It all depends on how comfy you want to be.

I would recomend car or truck camping to start. Carry all of the provisions you need. Get comfortable with that, then consider trekking out into the woods, or desert, or whatever with minimal supplies.

You'll have just as much fun to start, in a vehicle. With less stress about your kit.

Sleeping pad. Something I notice lots of beginners forget one. I got away with just a blanket underneath me as a kid because its hot where I live and because I was a kid, but it isn't the best way to do it. The ground will suck all the heat from you even if you have a really warm bag, and its generally uncomfortable. I recommend starting with a foam pad, such as a Therm-A-rest. I saw one for $30 online. I still have mine that's probably 12 years old.
Other than that just look up a list of what you need, and go to campsites that you won't get lost in until you gain some more experience. Plan ahead.

I can recommend kiwi camping's inflatable mats as the next step up from foam, my family have had a set for well over 10 years now, they're really comfortable. I don't know if you'd be able to buy them in the US though.

A tent
A tarp as well if you’re car camping
2. Insulation
A sleeping mat/pad to insulate from the hard ground
A sleeping bag or quilt for the coldest temp you expect
Rain gear, such as a jacket and pants or poncho
3. Hydration
A way to filter stream water, like a sawyer squeeze or Katadin be free
4. Nutrition
Food and a way to prepare and eat it
5. Fire
A way to start a fire. Mini bivy’s are popular. It’s nice for ambiance if nothing else
6. Repair tools
Just some duct tape and a pocket knife, really
7. Navigation
Map and compass, gps unit, geospatial PDF’s in your phone, even a simple trail map... it all depends on where you’re going.
Also directions to and from the trail head
Itinerary of where you’re going and when you’ll be back, left with a loved one
8. Illumination
Headlamp
9. First aid
Keep it simple; blister treatment is most important
10. Sun protection
A hat
Sunscreen
Buff
More important at high elevations

And of course the proper clothing, footwear, and a pack. That list is called the “Ten Essentials” and was started by a mountaineering club as the very basics everyone should carry when attempting to summit a mountain. It carries over well into hiking. It’s vague, which leaves room for the exact list to be tailored to specific needs determined by location, season, and so on.

Yes, it’s for bugs and weather. When you’re not using any kind of shelter it’s called “cowboy camping” and you’re 100% guaranteed to have stuff crawling on you throughout the late afternoon, night, and early morning.

I went up to Inyo National Forest a week ago, and holy fuck, I couldn't see mountains right in right of me. They were completely blocked by wildfire smoke. Freaked me the hell out, luckily a ranger passed me as I was fishing and told me I was fine. Camped out there for 5 days. Was awesome.

It was being blown in from two wildfires in Yosemite, so it wasn't thick smoke, but it definitely was triggering some natural instinct to get out. Next morning and the 3 days after, smoke was completely gone.

Yeah anon I understand your struggle, in Italy there'a a 300 euros fine for camping in "unauthorized" places. Fortunately the forest guards are quite friendly and won't actually fine you unless you behave like an asshole. Just try to camp in places away from roads and "civilization".
