Depends on what he's talking about exactly. Skipjack tuna and albacore are fished very hard. The other two here are listed as least concern so not exactly fished to extinction. Bonito are good, bonita(little funny, false albacore) are too strong for most unless prepped at the time of catch properly. I'm not so sure something like bonito have high metal content if only on account of the short lifespan. A 20" bonito can only take in so much mercury in the 9 months it took to reach that size.

It's not the best, but it's not awful. Its pretty standard for pre-snelled fishhooks and things like leech rigs for walleyes, but I would try to avoid it for big strong fish unless I felt my line was heavier than it needs to be.

For a leader that's weird for sure. With jerkbaits and stuff, a loose knot makes for a little bit more erratic action, and can be beneficial. I got skunked today :( Here's a pic of a very pretty small lake I tried out this Spring a couple of times. I caught some really good crappie and my PB redear sunfish. I plan to head back soon for round 3.

Like other goy said, it’s not ideal, you will have a weak link in there somewhere, but I haven’t had real issues. The biggest annoyance is that stringy algae crap likes to get caught on the swivel.

Also I would like to shill these fast snaps. 95% of the time, you don’t need the damn swivel, so it’s a waste. And more importantly, the ones in your pic, that flat piece of metal that is folded to hold the wire, they always get loose and will fail eventually and lose a lure and/or fish, the fast snaps are one solid piece of wire which is much more secure.

Better than snap swivels? I have been using them on my salt tackle for quick lure changes, and have had good luck with them. I did cast a lure off of the swivel once, so they are not perfect, obviously.

I prefer the VMC version of the same product, the side you tie to your mainline isn't unclipable, which allows them to make the whole thing lower profile. And yeah, most of the time you don't need the swivel.

I occasionally use the smallest size of these to attach size 1 panther Martins on 4lb mono for ultralight brook trout fishing. I find these swivels to be the lightest available.

man youd be stunned what bass will bite. you dont even need to go to the effort of getting bait. spoons for striped or white bass, spinners for bass/everything, and jigs for crappie/everything are as basic of a list as you can get and still kick ass fishing. i havent used bait for anything other than catfish in easily over a year

I just thought of one of my staple tricks and thought I would share. When you get those dessicant silica gel bags with shoes or other things, keep them and toss one in with your hooks and lures. It keeps them dry and corrosion free.

any fly fishermen here?

I am trying to create a rig to target mackerel using flies and a bombarda float using a spinning rod

would like some advice on what knots to use

1). knots to attach the flies to the flouro

2). and the knot connecting flourocarbon together highlighted in the yellow circle on the image

That should be plenty/overkill for targeting flatfish that size, but I don't know what you have to worry about in terms of by-catch/non-target species, so all I can say is ask your charter.

I noticed there is often a silica bead in hook packages, and figured it was worth a try. I tend to carry large amounts of tackle in my duffel bag, but I only grab a few faves and put them in a tupperware when I go out on the water. I am changing out stuff pretty often, so these help dry out the excess moisture for sure. I also carry toothpicks for soft plastics. Senkos and stuff this won't work, but with Texas rig or swimbaits, rig the plastic, then bring the head just over the hook eye. Insert toothpick into the hook eye and clip the excess. I have tripled the life of most of my soft plastics doing this. They hold fast and don't tear apart as easily. Pic related.

The blood knot is a little stronger but tougher to tie especially if your fingers are cold. Triple surgeon is easy to tie but a little weaker. When you use the surgeons knot for a dropper you want to make sure to only use the tag that is facing the end of your line not the part pointing towards your rod because it’s stronger. I usually use a double surgeons knot for trout because I’m lazy and never had a problem for bigger fish I’d probably use a blood knot. I just use a clinch knot to tie flies on unless using a streamer then I’ll tie a non slip loop for more action.

Not sure but the other anon seems to think so. Another secret is once you tie your surgeons knot and the dropper line gets too short to tie a new fly on you can take a piece of tippet and tie it above the knot with either a clinch knot or tie a perfection loop at one end of the new line and loop it above the knot. Keeps you from continually having to retie your leader. I would recommend keeping the dropper no longer than 6 inches or you will get crazy tangles. I usually only tie a ~4 inch dropper tag and then use the trick above when I need more line to avoid tangles.

Any anons ever fish a bvk or axiom 2x. Looking for an 8 or 9 wt rod that can launch an 8 wt rio outbound short line. My current rod really doesn’t have the tip to deal with the heavy head. The local boomers say they like to downsize the rio outbound line so they recommend I get a 9 wt to cast the 8 wt line. Give me the deets fellow fishing degenerates.

No. There is a risk of line rubbing on the toothpick, but I haven't had any fish break the line because of the toothpick. Since the knot is above the loop of the hook, the knot does not get affected by the toothpick. I will fish the worm on lunch and hopefully post results. I've mainly been trying to hone my crappie skills this winter.

I think a multi dropper rig will be your best bet. Tie a weight or jig to the end of your line, with flies on dropper loops over top of it. The jig will make everything sink and the flies will follow.
All you really need are a no slip mono loop and a dropper loop

Rockfish love squid strips, just did a baja coast rockfish trip last weekend and all of these rockfish left the live sardine on one of my dropper loops and all opted for the 2" squid strips. If you're going for dabs try to stay a little bit away from structure and stick to the mud/sand flats.

Are you just setting up in one spot? If so, that could be your problem. For walleye, I show up a couple hours before the sun starts to go down and drill holes all across the structure I am fishing. I find dawn to not be nearly as good as evening for walleye. Set up a tip-up on the best looking spot, then just hole hop all around as it gets dark. Being in the general vicinity of walleye is not good enough, remember that in most lakes visibility is only 3-10 feet even for fish. You need to be right on their travel path. If nothing shows up, then it's time to move onto a new piece of structure next time.

Setting up an ice house is a trap unless you are already on a spot you know is good or on a school of something. People who go out and set up their ice house on a brand new spot blindly catch a lot less fish on average than people who keep moving. The only time you should do that is if it's just too damn cold to ice fish without one.

all you really need is a chest camera and learn a simple video editing software (I reccommend shotcut, it's free and updated regularly, extremely easy to use but has a huge amount of depth at your control once you learn and get used to the basics)

Thoughts on telescopic rods from Shimano? I recently moved to the city and it's a fucking hassle with the rod I already have, so I would like something more compact.

I am a staunch defender of telescoping rods, but only for backpacking and travelling. It's easier to manage a backpack and get to remote locations with a telescoping setup, and there are decent carbon ones with stainless eyelets. I have used a couple of $25 Hurricane Makos for several years, and they have treated me very well. Pic related is one of them, and a 5-6 lb jack. I have brought in large catfish and bass up to 7 lbs with these rods as well.

I've used telescopic rods and genuinely abused them, and they're still servicable. The action is miserable and lining the guides up is a pain in the ass at best. I have taken 9 foot fly rods, placed them In a backpack, jumped on a motorcycle, and ridden an hour to use it. A piece of PVC pipe with a notch cut to allow reel clearance will work fine if you're worried about breaking it, but as long as you're not throwing your pack or falling flat on your back itll pretty much be fine without. Now, looking at a proper travel rod that's not near 2 feet of rod blank per section, it's much easier to carry and much less at risk.

People hate them and I get that. They are by no means my favorite type of rod, but I love their portability, and must look for ways to minimize weight and bulk depending on where my destination is. They fit that requirement perfectly. Rods are like tools, and you don't cut down a tree with a hammer, or nail something with a chainsaw. Love you, and I do mean that. Anyone who cares for fish and the environment is good in my book. Opinions are important, and I take most on here seriously. Except the guy who said he wanted to fuck the crappie I caught.

I have had some absolute pieces of shit as well, but I have also had some that have held up despite constant abuse. A lot of people force the sections when collapsing the rod and snap the rod tip, which is always a pisser. I keep mine constantly coated with a light film of oil so they open and close with ease. After dealing with endless salt and sand, I can say that it makes all the difference. I do it with my collapsible paddles as well. This whole concept was born out of necessity, first in regards to air transport. I had the opportunity able to fly to South Florida pretty cheap, but didn't have the money to ship gear, so I bought a little Shakespeare telescoping rod combo, and rigged it with 10 lb diameter 50 lb test braid. I packed it in my carry on and headed out. I was able to get hooks and leaders cheap enough once I was there, and live baited only. I would put a small hook on with a little bit of shrimp and catch a little fish, then take the small hook off, replace it with a large hook, and hook the small fish on the large hook and toss it back out. The only fish that bested me was a snook, but I managed to bring in sharks anywhere from 3-6 feet, jacks, and a 30 lb stingray that was a bitch of a fight. That little rod had zero backbone, and the stingray kept burrowing into the sand, so I had to tighten the line and thrum it like a guitar to get him to swim again. I even took it a second time a couple of years later, but the reel stripped gear teeth on something big I never got to see. I locked down the drag and popped it once I realized it was going to spool me. No way I want to be responsible for a fish with 100 yards of line trailing behind it. I still have the rod, in good shape, but use it only to catch bait now. OK, that was way too much for a shitposting forum. I'm going to sleep.

Got a really good bite on what felt like a cod was out of regular jigheads and the shops were closed so I was running this

But halfway through getting it in it just popped of my line and wheel I reeled in my bait looked kinda like this with the tail smashed up blocking the hook

Like the fish came and took it directly from behind folding the tail

Is this just a fact of life with offsethooks? Should I have pulled back harder for a stronger hook set? Or should I find a softplastic with a less substantial tail?

What's the optimum length for an ultralight rod? My first one was 7ft because I erroneously thought casting distance would matter, but I ended up liking the length anyway because it gave me enough backbone to bass fish with. But the tip was so long and whimpy that I broke it twice and by getting it snagged or caught on shit. Like 75% of the fishing I do with ULs is just jigging gulp minnows and power maggots on a 1/32oz head for bluegills and most of the rest is hucking shit under bobbers off a kayak and I'm beginning to doubt I need the length at all.

I'm about to build an 8.5 foot ultralight, I like a long rod not so much for added casting distance but i can use it kinda like a short cane pole in super tight spaces but still make a cast if the need arises. For you a 5'6"-6' rod sounds about right. You can also use an ice fishing rod, believe it or not.

I think the sweet spot is between 5'-6" and 7' but it really depends on what your usual areas are, tiny creeks with overhanging brush versus lakes and reservoirs. I also fell for the rod length

That’s exactly what I use. Just remember most rods aren’t actually rated to go even near the top rating most of the time. If you’re throwing a 2.8 Oz swimbait, lob it, don’t chuck it. You’ll break the tip off your rod.

Nickel for scale, going ice fishing for whatever bites with 4 pound test tomorrow. I also have a tipup with 20 pound dacron and 8 pound mono leader to a 1/16 ounce jig head and 18 inches to a dropper loop with a #8 scud hook to put a live minnow on the scud hook and a dead one on the jig

Just as the perch with size push out the dinks, the walleye show up and scare all the perch off. Now I've got 1 dead perch on the ice and these closed mouth fucks have been ignoring the live minnow, the spoon with minnow head, the rippin rap, the tungsten and waxie, everything I've got. Now I get to clean one fish for basically enough meat for an omelet and not enough for a family meal.

Frustrating.

Also it's gonna take another hour or so for me to sober up enough to be legal to drive. Overall, the first trip driving on the ice of the hardwater season is a success.

I probably wouldn’t throw swimbaits over maybe 2.5 ounces. Would I need to beef up my hooks? I prefer straight fluoro over braid to leader, but I’ve been reading that musky rods are super stiff. I can’t imagine that they’re too much more stout than a swimbait rod though?

That's the funny thing, it was a circle hook. Don't believe the propaganda fren, you can still gut hook with circle hooks. I might have been able to get the the hook out if it was a regular shape hook but I couldn't turn it around far enough.

If you like your circles to be more release friendly, use non-offset hooks and crush the barb.
Barbs on circle hooks are mostly useless due to the hook shape. They just increase the resistance when the hook goes in. You tend to get an easier hookset and an easier release with barbless circles.

I was just trying to catch anything.
I had a tip up with a jig head and minnow on it, as well as a minnow on a dropper loop 18 inches up from the jig head. I ran a similar rogue on a light rod with 4 pound mono and wax works. I was in 7-10 feet of water just kinda drilling holes. Fishing a foot off the bottom for a few minutes, then two feet, and so on. Repeat once more, walk 15 or so feet down the line, and repeat, because I dont have a flasher. After 30ish holes I decided to have some soup and run the errands I had for the day.

Atlantic mackerel tastes nicer and is far easier to fillet than horse mackerel. Those are the only two I have caught. You get fish like king mackerel and Spanish mackerel in other places of the world.
