I'm thinking of taking up battoning, since on my long walks in the cold lately mean I need to stop and brew a hot drink.
What knife should I buy?

SRK in SK5 is likely the best for the money

It's a waist of time, though. You can get most of the kindling from the ground as well as fallen branches for fire sustaining.

Knives aren't designed for impact and don't handle it well. You should be using a utility chisel for battoning, it's what they're made for.

My svord peasant knife is pretty good, but it seems the hardness is all over the place on them, I've broken a lot of them in various ways where others heald.
One of them I used to chisel welds which held some steel to some other steel. Hitting the back of the blade with a hammer. It worked and a minute of sanding later it was back to shaving.
It isn't that it's some magical thing, any knife made of tool steel will perform great as a tool.

I can vouch for this. At least for the BK9, which is so front heavy you don't even need to baton. I've chopped through logs the size of what the slag in OP's picture is attempting to baton through with a butter knife in one fluid motion. They're pretty great knives.

If you break the blade with a soft stick you have to be actually retarded.

Battoning is stupid and so is abusing your only knife, but they are so cheap that you can buy 3 of them for backups. They are also very light weight.
Even if you still Dont want a folding, just look for other knives using 15N20, or grind down an old spanner into a knife and fit up your own handle, same shit. I think kellam makes knives out of the same steel as well, I have one, it's 100 whoppers.

Bahco 2448 and 2449.

Made of the best mystery steel they could find abandoned in the back of some Chinese foundry.
But the description clearly says you can hit the back part of the knife to make work faster.

Why not a light axe or tomahawk of some sort? It would be much more suitable for this type of woodwork.
Choping with the knife is like buying a sports car to haul a camping trailer - there are cars more suitable for this.
