The palomar is my main knot, that being said for fly fishing you need to learn the fishermans knot because the fly hook eyes are so small you cant put a loop through them.

Depends on how much effort you're willing to put in to find isolated shores.

There's two ways to find solitude fishing when the weather is nice. Effort and money. The closer you are to a major metropolitan area, the more of either or both you need.

You can use a Clinch knot or the improved Clinch knot for a mono or fluorocarbon leader you only use a Palomar knot for braid. However a Uni knot works good for tying braid to fluorocarbon.

Do yourself a favour and choose between a normal canepole or a normal fly rod. Tenkara catches fish, but any fish you caught on tenkara you could catch on a cane pole or fly rod. Not every fish caught on a cane pole or normal fly rod can be caught on tenkara though.

I live on the damn intercoastal and I fish freshwater way more because it’s easier to find industrial area lake and canal access that isn’t raped by minorities. There’s a few intercoastal spots that are pretty quiet, but go out to that same spot during snook season with a full moon and there will be a couple other people there.

Shore fishing, you won’t be crossing as many lines, but good luck doing that on South Beach.

Pick a lake/river, find depth charts, ideally pick a spot that drops off from 15-20ft down to 20-25 feet. Then you can jig or use live minnows. You should be able to figure out the tackle through videos and articles. Huntsville is a nice place, bought skis there a few months ago.

Nah, I tried a one night when it was supposed to be good with a full moon and the right tide and season and this little spot under a bridge was filled with a bunch of brown people and nowhere to even cast a lure.

It’s annoying planning the fishing trip around all that bullshit. With freshwater I can just go out at dusk after work and have a good shot as long as it’s not that day or two after a cold front.

I think this one and the Sundolphin Journey 10 both have rod holders in the back. I have a Journey 10 I got for next to nothing, and it's not perfect, especially if you have any weight to you. It does the job though, and it has a scotty rod spot up front too. Not sure if the Lifetime does or not, but I would bet it does. The Lifetime's storage well goes all the way into the boat as well, while Sundolphin's doesn't. Here's how I thought I would sticker my Journey, but I haven't gotten around to it yet. I'm not sure I'm going to anyway.

Any other fly bros love tying deceivers. I am getting ready for striper season and have been tying up a bunch of my variation of them. I use two schlappen feathers for tail, crystal flash then use a dubbing loop and use ice dub that matches feather/buck tail and use a dubbing brush to tease it out really long then use sparse buck tail with some peacock over the top. Then I add some oversize eyes to it.

Not really. Sounds like you just live in a dead zone for saltwater fishing. Places like Stuart and and Jupiter have incredible saltwater fishing. When I went to the Juno pier I got tons of jacks and Spanish mackerels after 2 hours of fishing. Place was active as fuck

That’s a bowfin, right? Thought it was a snakehead but it was missing the spots. Lots of those in the canals near me and they might fight harder. I think I got a bowfin once in IL when I was a kid.

But yeah there’s a shit ton of freshwater to fish, the canals aren’t always the best, at least the parts that are easy to access, because those are fished by lots of people and there’s not a ton of structure so it’s tricky to find good spots.

Pic related came out of a little canal like that behind some moving company’s warehouse.

Also I have learned to work with soft plastics and going slow a lot since living here. The water is so warm most of the year that the bass get lazy. When I was in IL, I would do spinners and cranks all the time, but those only really work for LMB in Jan-Feb or when a storm is coming in and the pressure is changing. Texas rigged soft plastics, like 1/4oz bullet weight with a 2/0 or 3/0 EWG worm hook, and a baby brush hog or 6” lizard or finesse worm, bounce it slowly along the bottom. Some of the darker colors like junebug do good if it’s a little muddy or murky, natural colors if it’s clear, and for some reason the lakes with that brown stain but decent visibility, chartruese works well.

The snakeheads seem to hit inline spinners a lot. That blade on a Mepps Agila #2 or #3 gets their attention. Find some underwater grass and get a medium speed return with the spinner over the top and they will jump up from the grass and grab it.

Then there’s the Mayans and all the cichlids that have displaced other panfish, real fun to catch on lighter tackle, they will hit all the same shit a bluegill or crappie would go after. Pic related is on a 1/8oz underspin with one of those Gulp curly tail minnows.

Also not sure if TX anon still posts, but he was always slamming big bass over there, and we came to the consensus that the 6” Zoom lizard in Chartruese Pepper might be the best soft bait, if not the best lure overall. My PB LMB was on one of those, got some peacock bass on them too, although I haven’t mastered catching peacocks yet because most of the time I see them it’s super clear water lakes and they get scared off before they bite.

And the Trilene Knot becomes a waste of time once you learn the Palomar knot.

Palomar is way stronger and doesn’t get loose. Only reason people like the Trilene and others is because it looks fancy after tying 10,000 of them and getting gud, and it’s still way worse than the Palomar.

Say I want to try out biggish hard swimbaits. Around 1oz lures. Do I have to get a damn casting setup, or can I do it with spinning gear? I mean, I know I can... but why does 9/10 people do that on casting setups? Anyways... I'm having problems deciding on what kind of spinning rod I would even settle for on that. Should I just huck it on a medium heavy ugly stik gx2/elite? They are rated at max 3/4oz, but I know from experience what they can take. lol. I don't wanna break a rod tip on something else with a 1oz lure.

Hey bud not familiar with the James but I’m assuming it’s a tidal river. Normally I fish a stout 8 wt (tfo ticrx) unless the wind is really kicking up then I go with a 10 wt. On the local tidal rivers I always fish an 8 wt. If you are looking to buy a rod I’d recommend getting a 9wt though since it’s a more all around rod for stripers.
As far as flies are concerned you could basically fish only deceivers and clousers and catch a lot of fish. Especially early season I fish both of those flies in all white and tie them about 3 inches in length. I use a 1/0 eagle claw 254 hook which are cheap and salt resistant. Pick related is my favorite fly for stripers.
For a tidal river line selection can get a little tough. I normally fish a 250 grain 30 ft sink tip with unweighted or lightly weighted flies but some guys use intermediate lines. A few guys will use floating lines but then you need to weight the fly like crazy to get it down. I normally carry 3 spools with me..one with a sink tip, one with a full intermediate and one with a floating line. Let me know if you have any other questions.

Some large lures can be fished with light spinning rods without problem, basically anything that is straight retrieved like big curltails or big spinnerbaits

Thanks for the detailed answer. I have been at it for a couple years now and have been fly tying off and on the past year. I typically fish for bluegill bass and trout in small mountain rivers. I have pulled a few decent sized bass out of the James but anything too big snaps the line on my 4 weight. Looks like it's time to get another setup. If you’re throwing anything over 3 ounces I’d use atleast 65lb braid to a 25lb leader. But the rest of the set up is good. The 50lb braid has the diameter of like 12lb mono. So if you backlash or rub against rock then you’ll break off and swimbait lures are expensive

I love bass fishing and am getting more into creature baits, please explain to me why bass fishing setups use braided line that can take huge weight when (in my case) the biggest bass you could hope to see would be around 6 lbs? Alright guys, what kind of line should i use with spinning reel when im ice fishing? My last fishing trip with some coated dyneema line was a real shit show. All my line guides and reels line roller had so much ice that i needed to break it it off in large chunks after just a few minutes of fishing. On top of that the remaining water froze on my spool and the line did not come off freely after that. Im pretty sure the main problem was that the line was way too thick and had a lot of surface area to collect water. Should i go with thin mono or fluorocarbon or some fancy teflon coated shit?

Because people honestly think catching Bass is fun lmao. Don't get me wrong there is a place in South Fort Myers called Lakes Park you can find Snook and Tarpon in that water and it's technically freshwater.
But the best fishing is the Saltwater game fish. Tarpon, Snook, Grouper, Redfish Black Drum, Coba, King Mackerel.

Ya you are going to want something bigger than a 4 wt for stripers. Stripers can be played to death easier than most fish so you want something with a stout butt to bring them in especially since you often find them in heavy current or rips. I usually just use a straight section of 20 lb mono for a leader you don’t want to go much heavier than that since most fly lines have a breaking strength of 25-30 lbs.
I fish in New England so I’m guessing the conditions are a little different from Virginia. If you want to keep things cheap I would go with an intermediate line and a fast action 9 wt. I like shooting head style lines but a lot of boomers use fly lines with longer heads. I use an intermediate line the most of all my lines and you can even fish top water on them if you don’t let the line sink before retrieving. My least used line is a floating line.

Yes it is multifilament but not braided. The coating is like tube around the fibers that fuses it all together so there are no gaps. Awesome line during summer but not ideal for ice.

You can get to a lot of them because businesses don’t build all the way up to the edge of the canal. I go over there on a Sunday afternoon when the place is empty and I very rarely have problems. As long as you don’t set up shop with 10 rods and coolers and all the kids running around, they don’t really care when they see a dude walking around with a fishing rod.

There is so much freshwater, it’s easy to find access. Pic related is a spot I got a handful of big sneks. I just park my car in that lot where the trailers are on a Sunday and it’s cool.

There was one time I had a cop tell me to ask for the business owner’s permission next time. It was like 7pm on a Saturday night at a place that rebuilds jet engines and he said they had problems there before. My car being parked nearby to cowlings from an Airbus probably didn’t help.

the second one only applies if you are even using a baitcaster, so the first reason is the only across the board justification. the third one I didn't mention is that YES, people love yanking the fish to shore with no fear of snapping line. It's kind of lame... but I can't complain because it's better than breaking off in a big fish and making the fish possibly suffer because of it. bass fishing is one of those things where people do whatever is trendy, and the trends change. I like using a medium spinning rod and smaller lures personally... then again, a big bass around here is maybe 10lbs.

Thanks for the breakdown, I'm not a baitcaster though I'm not opposed to learning, it just seems to be something guys with boats do more often and I'm strictly a wading/shore fisherman. 95% of my fishing is done from the middle of the river and very rarely am I casting into cover that I can't retrieve, my only x-factor is overhead foliage.

I like an open faced reel with 10 lb mono and an fast light action rod. My only concern is that the rod needs to be stiff enough to cast a Tokyo rig or Wopper Plopper. I had some incredible blowups last year on it, one of those days where you catch so many big fish it starts to feel gratuitous.

My dad died this past October, he lived near the Madison County, VA. There are some rivers around there that are just incredible, Bass fishing in pristine and untouched pools filled to the brim with monsters.

I went out fishing for a few hours a day and then spent the rest of the time taking care of him. It was a tough month, those days on the water really kept me grounded in a sad time. I broke my personal best again and again.

I highly recommend getting rid of the 10lb mono and throwing on some 15lb or 20lb braid. It’s better than mono in basically every way. I don’t even go super heavy, but 15lb braid feels like casting ~6lb mono, so you get the strength of some thicker mono and the casting that is closer to UL stuff. Beyond that, you don’t get those stupid memory loops like mono, the line stays straight, it doesn’t get fucked up by UV rays and water after a few months like mono, plus the extra strength means you can get a little knick in the line and not notice for a cast or two and it won’t break on a 2lb fish like the 8lb mono woukd

I'm not going to argue polamar isn't the strongest, but it's just slicing hairs at that point. And it isn't the easiest to tie, try tying on a 10" long swimbait, I'm not doing a palomar, not even for a 1/2 jig. I only, only use it for braid and small lures for ultralight. That's about it.

Baitcaster = straight fluorocarbon
Spinning reel = take advantage of the thin diameter braid for casting distance

Fluoro = best sensitivity, abrasion resistance, very slight stretch, typically 1 pound step lower than mono diameter (16 is 14, 14 is 12, 12 is 10, etc.). I hate braid for it's lack of stretch, if the lure is dead to rights gone, it is a pain in the ass to snap 30/40/50 pound braid compared to 10/12/14/16/20 fluoro, etc. but for spinning tackle it is hands down the BEST. NO line twist.

I disagree that flouro has the best sensitivity. Braid is more sensitive because it doesn’t stretch at all so you feel every time a fish bites as long as you have some tension.

Posted this a week or so ago, my best day so far this year. I found a massive point that juts out ~300 yards and has no tells on shore so it's rarely fished. The end of the point seems to have lake trout on it feeding all day long. Lost 3 much bigger ones that all came in a single school, which sucked. All on tiny marabou crappie jigs. Finding this spot took 10 trips, the rest of which I only caught one or two trout all day. It's worth keeping at it and moving as much as you can when the fishing isn't hot.

Nah, Blue Mesa in Colorado. I used to live in the upper midwest but never fished the great lakes, those are some seriously intimidating bodies of water. Lake trout are great ice fishing fish, super active and aggressive fish even into late winter, they will regularly follow a spoon from the bottom in ~80 FoW all the way up to where you can see them through the hole then all the way back down to the bottom. The only real problem is that they are super hit or miss I find. Some days they just won't hit anything even if you find them, some days you can't keep them off any lure you drop, some days they just seem to disappear entirely.

As far as a big fishing trip for something you don't know, those are my favorite kinds of trips. Even if the fishing sucks, it's still fun just trying something totally new and different and trying to piece together a plan for something unknown.

Unless he's crazy far north I don't think the fjords freeze. Ocean water needs to be colder to freeze and oceans usually stay a little warmer than smaller freshwater bodies in the same areas. Just based on my school knowledge though, I could be wrong.

There is a fjord people ice fish fish on around Saguenay in Quebec. From what I hear they mostly fish for redfish (some kind of rockfish), halibut, and pollack and other little cod like things. I dunno about European fjords though since the climate there is moderated by the Atlantic.

Make your own Sabkini they're easy as fuck to make and take less then 5 minutes to make 4 hooks tied. Simply get fishing line put any where from 1-8+ hooks roughly 6 inches a part do a overhand knot and repeat for all the hooks you can put a sinker at the bottom of the line where you load the hooks on at and then cut off the spool end and tie it to you pole and put some bait on.

Can I use a freshwater rod to fish in saltwater?
My rod is a 4 piece fenwick 7' Medium Light-Fast.
Im not to worried about the reel because its a penn fierce 2 size 2000, i think its designed for whitsand saltwater.

Unrelated, I just got a new job at a bbq place and the executive chef sells "ocean perch" as "southern fried perch". It's weird af to me because its basically red snapper, but the average customer probably assumes its yellow lake perch because we're in SE michigan surrounded by perch fisheries. Me, some of that stuff is just a result of common names being different in different places. I know people further north call our vermillion rockfish "red snapper" and the escolar one isn't really mislabeled since there is no "white tuna" it's just another name for escolar. Also I read one of these reports saying something like 100% of CA halibut was mislabeled flounder per DNA testing, but there is no such thing as a "true" CA halibut, it technically IS a flounder.

what the fuck is wrong with me? I live in Northern California, and have been trying to successfully land my first fucking rainbow trout for almost the past year.

I've tried various methods, power baits, worms, spinners, mini jigs, kastmasters, etc. I've been to a variety of lakes that are freshly stocked.

So far I have lost three fish. The first two I've lost in the same exact spot with the same exact spinner (panther martin) within 7 day's of each other. The little guy flopped off the treble hook both times. This last weekend I was using Berkeley Atomic teasers. Got a nice big guy hitting it, and right at the shore the fucking line broke with the lure.

What am I doing wrong? Should I be tying a better clinch knot to my lure? Is it my line? (4lb nano braid to 4lb fluro) should I be using a net?

Am I just cursed? I'm taking a break on fishing because I feel like I'm a bit too thirsty and unlucky. I don't think I could continue fishing knowing some poor trout has my lure stuck in its lip for the rest of its life.

Trout just get off a lot, they headshake hard, jump, and have weak mouths. Just keep tension up during the fight and keep trying, any slack line makes it a lot more likely they will get off. It helps to have a soft rod and use mono which stretches and help keep tension, but those aren't too big of a deal. Also, get a hook sharpener and use it until the hook is sharp enough to dig into your fingernail.

Missed that your line is breaking. Make sure your knot is good for the line type, not sure what works best with fluoro but palomar is a good bet for any line type. I only use braid+leader when jigging in deep water when you need the sensitivity. Otherwise it just introduces a major weakness in the rig especially with thin line. For casting from shore, mono all the way down is fine.

One thing I've started doing in saltwater is tying a palomar and then using the tag end to put an ag chain on it. Depending on how many you throw on there it can protect the first inch or so of the main line if it is getting rubbed/chewed.

Yeah, the palomar is nice because it's super hard to fuck up and still very strong on all line types, the only problem with it is if you are using massive rigs or lures since you need to pass it all through a loop. I think the trilene is a little stronger for mono and fluoro, but it needs some practice to tie well. Keeping up tension should make a big difference if you weren't doing that.

I find that with really thin line, line to leader knots are way too easy to fuck up and should be avoided when possible. Somehow fly fishermen manage it though. I'll sit and be super careful tying a double uni and it will still snap seemingly randomly.

Yep, then make a loop out of the tag end, and run it through the main line and tag end 5-7 times, then tighten. It looks kind of tedious, but worth a try.

What did you tie this out of? I tie some synthetic “ep” flies with knock off ep fibers but I tie them a lot more sparse. Usually I use a lot of flash though. I like mixing angel hair with the bootleg ep fibers to give it a really crazy look in the water. I like the colors though so I’ll try to do something similar. I mostly fish big deceivers, ep style baitfish and pike bunnies trying to mix it up this year.

its not hard, i built my first rod by using a cardboard stand to hold the rod blank, one hand to spin it, and one hand to guide the thread. just find the spine and make sure the eye guides are straight in line and oriented correctly to the spine, and paint on epoxy when you're done. spend a half hour watching youtube tutorials and you'll be fine.

It’s not nonsense. Braid slips around your spool when using heavy drag unless your spool has a rubber band around it to stop it. That’s why you’re supposed to use mono as a backer before putting on braid.

I use braid tied with an arbor knot straight to the spool on 8lb braid all the way up to 100lb and this isn't a thing. You shouldn't get your fishing advice from old boomers who call every bit of new technology a gimmick.

I have a cheap sit in kayak now that I barely ever use because its so uncomfortable. I just use my float tube but it sucks on any big water and for saltwater. The only thing I've heard about pedal drives is your fly line gets stuck in them so I'm thinking something I can stand on and use a trolling motor to move. Not looking to take it in any serious surf but salt ponds, lakes, and rivers.

I'd put the money in a Bote in that case. I'm not sure if you're from the US, or if it's an option. I know my board would work well for fly fishing, but I haven't mounted a trolling motor on it...yet. I have been mulling it over, but everything I've done has been stuff that didn't require damaging the board. I have some rod holders to mount into the board, but I'm hesitant, because I haven't quite perfected the placement. I want to keep my crate in the back, so I'm going to take my sweet time and make sure it's perfect for what I want. Maybe once I do that I'll trying making a trolling motor mount. It would be ideal, since I want the new rod holders for trolling. But, I like the work of paddling around all day. It can suck, but it sucks less each time because you get stronger and more adept.
