Does anyone here use a hammock to camp? Why or why not?
I hear it's good for summer camping because it keeps you cooler.

I just purchased a Warbonnet Blackbird XLC hammock, and I am excited to try it out.

Pic related, its the hammock.

I camp in a hammock almost exclusively. The only exceptions are trips out of the area (I travel to the PNW a few times a year).

It’s a give and take. There are a lot of upsides to a hammock for sure. Site selection is easier because you do t have to worry about roots, rocks, and uneven or lumpy ground. Condensation is never an issue. They’re cooler on warm nights. The systems are sometimes modular; you can opt for a larger tarp for more weather protection or a different suspension to save some weight.

Try hanging your foot end slight higher than your head end. 6” works for me. If you don’t have a water break in your suspension, tying a short piece of rope to it will work as a drip line. Small stuff sacks used for various other pieces of gear can be hung from a structural ridgeline for various things.

It's hard to get as comfy on the ground as you are in a hammock unless you have a full on browse bed or a REAL nice ground pad. The only thing you should consider is the lack of insulation under you in the hammock. An underquilt makes it fucking delightful, but even a foam mat helps. Just sleeping in your bag or without even that is fine for warm weather, but if you take it out in the cold, you crush the bag under you so the cold creeps in if you don't have something to mitigate that.

I just got my XLC and cant wait to try it out myself in a couple of weekends. Good luck to you and if you dont mind me asking what else do you have/are planning to get? I ended up going with a double layer XLC with a Thunderfly tarp in shadowpine camo. I eventually will save the money and buy a wookie as well from warbonnet but in the meantime I bought a snugpack underblanket and plan to use it this season and from the reviews for most it has been fine down to 32F so that will cover 99 percent of the weather I plan to camp in at least. Also the ultimate hang is worth the 20 bucks and is a good read.

I had a setup that I used exclusively for backpacking for years and I still have my ENO hammock, It's a great budget option but it's not always going to be easy to find camp sites with the trees you need which can pose some problems out west, especially Alpine areas which is why I eventually saved up and got a good tent.

I actually started cowboy camping when applicable and I highly recommend it if you've never tried.

Honestly makes me sad to see all the negative responses. I've spent hundreds of nights /out/side and I would say hammocks are ideally used in tropical jungle or rainforest. They keep you up and cool, out of any puddles, and away from bugs. Anywhere where those aren't main priorities you're better off with a tent.

That said, in hot weather I refuse to use anything else.

Why do you say this?
I live in northern europe and almost exclusively camp with a hammock.

Just get an underquilt and be done with it OP. You can't sleep in a hammock without bottom insulation exept if it's somewhere extremely hot. Get one that's rated for something like freezing temperatures, you can always use a lighter topquilt/sleeping bag, but an underquilt is a must.
I have friends who use pads in a hammock, but for some mysterious reason they seem to wake up around 3 hours before I do when I'm using an underquilt. You can get away with covering yourself with whatever rag in the summer as long as you have a warm underquilt.
The one thing I almost never see anyone talk about or admitting straight that sometimes fiddling with a hammock to get it to a good position is an absolute pain. The times where I have only shot it on the trees and have it been perfect immediately are few and far between. Usually I need to lie in it and get back up to adjust a couple of times for it to be good for sleeping.

Have you tried whoopie slings? They make the process a lot easier. Fucking about with webbing was my least favourite part about hammocking, but changing to these saves a fuck ton of time and frustration. I feel like I can just trow the hammock up and it's going to be fine most of the time.

Pretty easy to get it right if you have a structural ridgeline. The sag will always be close to the same and you can more easily judge the foot end height compared to the head end.

Then you’ve got a super cozy place to chill out and watch the trees sway. If you’re in a group, people with tents will end up under your tarp because it’s that much better than a tent.

Grow a pair. If you think someone questioning you is mean, then why ask for advice? If you ask for a fix, don't go on to make excuses for why it can't be fixed.

If you want to actually fix your problem, try something new. For instance; if a whoopie sling isn't working for you, have you considered using the "2 decender rings and Garda hitch" suspension? Put the rings on the hammock ends and just put rope on the trees. Now you have an infinitely adjustable setup. The trade off is buying descender rings and you have to spend the time to learn how to use it so you can set it up as efficiently as whatever you use now.
Also, how do you decide when your hammock is properly tensioned? Are you looking at the tension on the ridgeline? The shape of thee hammock itself? Or are you just hanging it off the ground and then getting in and doing guess and check until you're happy? Is there a way you can streamline that procedure?
Also, to aavoid talking at cross purposes; what is your idea of a small error? I have tried other suspensions, but I just use a webbing daisy chain most times, because I'm lazy and it's easy. Have you found that your comfort zone requires more adjustability than 6" increments on each side?

How do you avoid bugs in a hammock? For me (Canadian) I like tents because I enjoy being able to lounge around in a space without annoying black flies or mosquitos bugging me constantly.

what kind of hammock are you using? A tent like a warbonnet or Hennesy? or one of the nylon ones like ENO?

The tents usually have guy line tie-outs that allow you to flatten it out a bit laterally. The eno style ones are obviously less adjustable, but you can sew some paracord loops onto the margins and make your own tie out spots. If you just pull the sides out in different places, you can get an idea where you want them and then sew them on. That will help with flattening out the hammock, if that's what you're trying to do.

These two things can’t both be true. With a structural ridgeline the gap between trees has no effect on how the hammock hangs.

A bug net.

Some are integrated, like in the pic. The net is sewn to one edge of the hammock and zippers to the opposite edge, along the entire length of the hammock. Mosquitoes can easily bite through nylon, but your protected underneath by an underquilt.

Other nets are completely separate from the hammock. They slip over the entire thing rather than attach with a zipper. These are usually after market, sold separate items that are pretty universal in how they attack. Most have doors that zip closed but a few have an elastic opening on the bottom. The zipper door style are ideal in conditions where you don’t need an underquilt (which probably doesn’t happen often in Canadia).

camped almost a month in a hammock setup. eno doublenest with mosquito net and rain fly. every 2 or 3 days I'd have to readjust the tightness of the hammock, and all my gear fit comfortably under hammock and fly. I actually really liked it once you figure out which positions are most comfy for you. always ended up entirely wrapped up with hammock and down quilt like a comfy warm burrito. I'm more of a marlinspike and a whoopie sling guy myself, it's actually very convinient that it's so easy to adjust and that is the one I'm going to stick with because my issue is not with that. Firstly I put the tree huggers in the trees and try to put the feet end little bit higher than the head end. Second I try to get the hammock to a height where I can sit on it comfortably and that my feet reach the ground. Third I try to get the ridgeline so that it's quite firm when I sit in it, but not a piano string, so from the sag of the ridgeline alone comes the first adjustment. I also try to get the hammock to be pretty much in the center of the 2 trees so that the descent angle of both of my suspension strings is at least similar and so that they are roughly the same length. After that I start lying down on it and making minor adjustments to the firmness depending on if I get a calf ridge or something like that. This is the usually the point where I have to adjust it a couple of times if I'm actually considering sleeping in it for the entire night.

Op here, I have a few questions:

1 - I'm a fairly hot sleeper, at what temperature can I leave the underquilt at home?

2 - I purchased a 0 degree underquilt. Will that be too hot for warmer temps...like when it's 40-60 degrees? I heard that by changing the gap between your underquilt and hammock you can control how much warmth there is...is that true?

3 - I don't have overquilt yet, in the mean time can I just use a wool blanket or something?

Very Nice. I am interested in how well the winter bottom and top cover work to form the Chinook to fully encapsulate the hammock from wind supposedly it keeps you alot warmer. Seems super awesome for winter camping but I am a poorfag so maybe someday.

It helps if you have a fixed ridge line on your hammock, it takes a little fiddling to get a comfortable amount of sag, but as a general guide set your ridge line to 80% of the length of your hammock. Once you've set the distance between to where you like it you'll have a consistent hang every time.

Question: The hammock I got is the Warbonnet Blackbird XLC...are you saying I may need to adjust the ridgeline on that in order to get the comfiest hang? All the videos I've watched have not showed this.

shug mentioned it in one of his videos maybe the blackbird XLC review but for minor ridgeline adjustments you can use a beaner and wrap the ridgeline around it a couple of times and that will tighten it up.

If there is a structural ridgeline installed, then that means the distance between the two gathered ends will always be the same (the length of the ridgeline). If the ends are the same distance apart, the hammock itself will hang the same regardless of how you tie it to the trees (within reason). If you adjust the ridgeline, the hang will change. Either you're adjusting the ridgeline, or you don't have a structural ridgeline. Leave the ridgeline alone once you have it comfortable and it'll go up the same every time.

Should I just start using a piss bottle? Even then it's hard to piss laying down. I could lean off to the side I guess and piss out of the hammock but then I'll be stepping in mud in the morning. How do you guys deal with this?

That applies only if you overtighten it, meaning that the suspension lines would all need to be completely horizontal for it to be exactly the same every time. And hanging a hammock like that is just plain wrong.
Structrual ridgeline is not a solid beam that will always keep the ends the same distance from each other because if you loosen the suspension even a little bit, the sag will increase and the hang wont be the same anymore. The entire contraption will have a certain amout of sag because the suspension lines from the trees will approach the hammock in a descending angle. If the firmness of your ridgeline changes even a little bit, the hang will in fact not be the same. Too tight is not good and too loose is even worse. The tension of the ridgeline is supposed to be such that when you sit or lie down on it, it will be firm, but you can still bend it with your fingers and when you get up, it will sag just ever so slightly.
I have a solid closed loop ridgeline made from amsteel and my whoopie slings are directly attached to it and there is no adjustments to be made there.
I think why this subject breeds confusion is because you people are trying to oversimplify this stuff to the point it breaks the laws of physics, but there is alot more to this stuff than it might first seem.
Sure, a ridge line HELPS immensly on getting the same kind of hang every time, but the ridgeline itself doesn't make it so that no matter how you hang your hammock the hang would always be the same. That would only apply if you had like a steel beam over it and not a string that will give in if you loosen the suspension.

Ok, but this is like people who try to make Bushcraft fast and easy. If you go into the woods to "Bushcraft", you shouldn't be trying to take too many shortcuts, or you are not longer bushcrafting, you're just primitive camping. If you can't stand adjusting a hammock, why go hammocking? Just bring a ground pad and set up in a tent. If you like a hammock for the comfort, then take the time to make it as comfy as you'd like. Like you (I assume you, anyway) already pointed out; you don't get the same hang twice since trees are never spaced the same. Adjusting your hammock to one degree or another will always be part of the show.

That's what I have been trying to say all the time, but my issue is that people will start calling me a retard because of it and that my issues are in fact non existant, because I apparently don't understand how a ridgeline works.
My original point was to "warn" new people getting into hammocks and such that yes, there will be fiddling and depending on a person and their needs and wants there might be quite alot of fiddling to do every single time the hammock is hung.
I don't particularry have a problem with the fiddling, but I have a problem with people pretending that you just shoot your hammock to the trees however and it will be perfect every time.

If you tie your hammock up so that the angle of the hammock at the suspension points is 30 degrees, the distance between the two ends of your hammock will always be the same. If you tie a piece of cord between the two ends of your hammock, then your hammock cannot achieve a shallower angle than this (though it can achieve a steeper angle - not that you'd want to tie it at one, regardless of the ridgeline). As long as your tie your suspension at least as shallow as the natural 30 degree hang, then the ridgeline will become taut and the hammock underneath will remain at a 30 degree (at the ends) hang. Sitting in the hammock will pull downwards, causing the angle to become slightly steeper and introducing slack to the ridgeline (though a shallow enough angle of suspension will account for this slight change).

As long as the suspension (that is, the rope connecting the hammock to the tree) is at a shallower angle than whatever your structural ridgeline (a line fixed at either end of your hammock, of some shorter length than your hammock) causes your hammock to lay at, then a structural ridgeline will pull taut under load. Of course, when not in the hammock, this line will still be taught but the load will be light and you will be able to bend it with your fingers.

This is pretty basic geometry. For a given chord (ridgeline) length and arc (hammock) length, you'll arrive at the same angle. The only time you can change this is if you place your suspension at too steep an angle, causing the natural hang of the full suspension+hammock length to narrow too much and introducing slack to the ridgeline (as explained earlier). But you wouldn't hang at that harsh an angle anyway.

well you beat me to it, buddy. Don't use shock cord, and tighten your ridgeline just a wee bit once it's stretched out to account for the small amount of stretch you'll get. Or, if you *do* want a structural ridgeline (rather than just a convenience line, where as you point out it would be okay to use paracord) then use something which doesn't stretch as much as paracord. Just like we don't use paracord for suspension (because it's inappropriate for that application), don't use it for a structural ridgeline.

Meaning that I will get up from the hammock to shorten the other end of my suspension for like 2cm and then try again. I first set everything up so that it visually looks okay, then I start fiddling.

The way around this issue would basically mean that I would neet to set it up perfectly and then take exact measurements of the hang angles and start carrying a protractor with me everywhere I go.

I lived in my double sized Grand Trunk hammock at my old summer camp job for a month during the summer of 2016 and 2018 at work. My boss always kicked us out of our gigantic tents on platforms with real beds in them and told us to move to the unused bunks, but I ended up finding a sneaky spot in the woods and hiding my clothes and toiletries in plastic bins on camp because I enjoyed hammocking by myself so much more than communal bunk living. I kept a ENO superfly tarp up above it, held up to all kinds of crazy weather very well, insulated with cheap folding Thermarest pad and 0 degree down bag (mid/late august to early October in colder region) and used an airline neck pillow. Sometimes I would bring a cheap Walmart comforter and throw it on top of me so I could watch tv/movies on my phone without having the sleeping bag super zipped up. It was really warm and comfy, I miss it a lot, mostly to be in a spot where nobody could find me in a very communal work setting. Sometimes foxes woke me up screaming nearby in the forest, I yelled at them, and kept a knife and bear spray near me for niggers/black bears. I have pictures on my old phone, not on me right now

Only guesses, still hated it. The staff bunks were always gross and not worth getting yelled at for other people’s fuckups or lack of cleaning. Many staff members were international and would only stay for a few extra weeks until they left, so the incentive to be clean was never there. The tents were great for tent beers and getting high before going out to the bar or going to sleep, plus deer lived in that forest and I’ve had mornings where they were so close to the tent, you could hear them breathing. In 2018 my platform had a blueberry bush growing behind it, and blackberry bushes were a short walk away. I can’t wait till the Shanghai shivers vaccine is more available and owners open these camps up again, I’ll apply at a new one and spend another summer outdoors

I have this one instance where I was particularry tired and I went for a piss right before I climbed into my hammock. However just as I was falling asleep I noticed that I have to get up to piss for a second time in like 20minutes.

Y'know I've always considered hammocks as something of a meme and for peace of mind I would almost always go for a tent as a 'just in case' for crazy weather/ winter camping... but your post has really turned me on to the idea just because I hadn't considered how many other places become accessible when you aren't as concerned about slope. Just take care to not break your underquilt's suspension when stuffing it in a sack.
Also make sure your hammock suspension is detachable so you don't pack wet cords with your hammock after a rainy night.

The speed of hammock setup cannot be underrated. Was a tentfag for the longest time till a buddy came out and setup his hammock in less than 2 min. Needless to say I am now also a hammockfag in 90% of out adventures.

Someone makes a giant stuff sack for just that purpose. It’s called the lazy slug tube. It’s just a big ass snake skin. So yeah, it totally works, but I think without the sack it might become twisted up in the quilt suspension.

any pad would take care of a lot of the problem. If you are in a bag in the hammock, that'll take care of the rest, unless it is SO cold that the loss of loft from being in contact with the hammock actually makes a difference. If you see splits, branches with no bark, fungi growing on limbs (It doesn't grow on good wood), If it's a bleached, white driftwood looking skeleton, etc.. If you go walk in the woods and just look for dead branches, you'll get a pretty good handle on it in short order.

Just pulled the trigger on the bushmen glow underquilt. Underquilts are not too widely available in europe yet and the shape of this is kind of funny, but I guess it'll be better than my old one that is oval shaped.
Anyone have any experiences or opinions on this? The other side of this is fluorecent orange and I think that's kind of nasty.
My other options would be the cumulus selva series, but I don't know man. The website doesn't even say where the company is based in and that raises some serious eastern europe flags in my mind.

I am going out this weekend to finally test my hammock and use my snugpack underquilt but I have not taken it out yet so I cannot give it a review. From my own research and other peoples reviews its warmer than what it looks like but it is also heavy for what it is and bulky. its a little bigger than my 20 degree old sleeping bag compressed down and weights the same if not more than my hammock and is bulkier. From the reviews and from hammock forums people have taken it to 32F and have been fine but keep in mind your experience may differ if you are a colder vs warmer sleeper. I am a fat fuck so I am a warm sleep so its a decent choice. Also if you are buying the snugpack be warned you will need to buy some carabiners separately if you want easier setup and takedown of the quilt.

I mean that new Cloud 71 is pretty light, and a SilPoly tarp can be pretty small, especially if your ok with an asymmetric shape. But the Gossamer Gear The One is under 18oz. Hard to beat that after you add in suspension and a bugnet (InB4 DCF). But which suspension? What kind of net? Lots of factors there.

I always use a hammock except when I’m on my once or twice a year destination trips. In the warmer months I definitely come out ahead because I don’t need an underquilt but on the ground I’d still need a pad. So that’s a huge weight savings for me that I wouldn’t get in a tent. I’d also sweat all night so no thanks lol.

Look champ, I don't mind hammocks per se. Like I said there are specific use cases for them. But there are also pros and cons and in most situations the cons heavily outweighs the pros in comparison to a tent, especially if you plan on staying out for more than just the one or two nights. And for committed hammock tards to then be like "nope, not real, doesn't exist, no cons!" is just embarrassingly obtuse and doesn't serve anyone any good. People will just end up buying a lot of gear and will most likely have to spend again when it doesn't live up to expectations.

My wife and I took our hammocks on a two week AT section hike in 2006, and we saw one (1) other person using one, out of the dozens of people we came across.

Heres my hammock setup bros.
I put the tarp up because it was just starting to rain and the wind picked up. I had sufficent walking room and was covered from the wind. I cooked food and had some hot chocolate as I sat and leaned back in my warm hammock and surveyd the lake ahead.
I would have been pretty miserable if I was crouching down in some moist and flapping tent, not to mention there wasn’t even level ground for like a mile radius, only rocky forest floor, swamps and hills.
Funnily enough trees were everywhere.

Most of that dead looking stuff is just on the way out, Pine Beetles have ravaged this area (Uintas in UT) so a lot of the trees look dead but still have some living tissue inside, i.e. not breaking off easily. I'm definitely vigilant when it comes to widowmakers and wouldn't pitch in a place that is exceedingly dangerous.

Dutchware makes this thing called a "pup tent" that you clip to the end of your suspension and it's a little waterproof tent made of sil-nylon and bugnet I think, looks chill and then just throw in a pad & down blanket for the dog and it should be good? My dog basically refuses to sleep with me. Even when camping if I try to sleep next to him he always fucks off to the other side of the tent or whatever. If I put him on my bed at home he hops off when he thinks I'm asleep. Maybe if it was really cold or rainy he'd stay in the hammock but I doubt it.

Camped almost six years in one, in the freezing arctic cold. It's better than a real house and the zero gravity suspension makes it so you can survive on a diet of snow.
I've met a girl since then and we've discussed moving into the hammock and raising a family. We figure we can stack three of em for a three floor solution (over a mesh in case one of the little uns fall out).
Parallell to the hammocks we're planning to suspend some tarps that we can grow crops on. We're vegans (ofc) but you could also keep cattle on them, however we'll be keeping our farming equipment there so we don't have to hoist the tractor up the tarps every single time we want something done in the field. That would just be silly.
Some guys have had success filling their hammocks with water for a makeshift hot tub. We've thought about it but it's probably easier to just buy an above ground pool and suspend it between a couple of trees instead of modding a hammock.

I once had a cottonwood keel over on me in the night. It was annoying but I mostly felt bad about the damage to the camping location.

I built a tensahedron so I don't have to worry about shit like that anymore. More weight to carry than a hammock, but no more than a tent and waaaaaaay the fuck more comfortable.

Hammocks have been the most convinient for me back when i was broke.

Have a 30$ amazon one with a bug net I've used for years. I fell off trying to piss out the side and ripped through the mosquito net once and bought another.

Had an inflatable sleeping pad that could slip off, but i would just fix it and go back to sleep. Usually I'd wake up from cold if it slips off before it becomes a bigger issue.

I'd keep a 40F rated bag, wool blanket and cover my feet with the wool overshirt.

D&d tarp if I'm in the mountains. Just the built in net if it's dry. Super comfy hiking alone.

Some trees can get messed up from this, like Joshua trees for example. which as stupid as it sounds do get used like this.
They aren't even true trees with heart wood necessary, but even other trees can have the ropes dig in the cambium while holding your fat neckbeard asses.

The flat hammock ties are super easy to use and don't dig into the tree either. Theyre also stretchy which may or may not be favorable for you.

I haven't seen anyone talk about things like elasticity & swing. I keep my backpack hung behind my head and let it swing a little. If you hang things a certain way you could get no
Swinging which is a little disappointing imo.
I've had branches stop me from swinging and i just ain't as comfy.

There is a place for someone to write a fucking paper on how to hang a hammock while eliminating most of the variables and really looking into how small adjustments effect the hang.

Last year I tried a hammock. After a couple nights getting used to hanging there without the "safety" of tent walls, it's the best innawoods sleep solution.
Haven't used a tent since, even camping out in the desert you can find a spot to hang, and with the right bag/quilt you can sleep in any temperature.

If you can't get a good nights sleep in a hammie don't come into a hammock thread and shit it up

To be honest, this is my first time buying a hammock at all. I already have a good lightweight set up with a tradition tent and sleeping bag.

I bought this to go with a MLD bag liner that I plan to use as a secondary bag.

The combo weighs like 15 oz and I'll only bring it if I can guarantee it won't rain or be buggy. Where I live, a 60 degree bag + no tarp and bugnet is going to be ok for a bunch of the summer.

My camping hammock IS more comfortable to sleep in than my ENO, but the ENO is more convenient, since it packs smaller and lighter, so it sees more use, because I'm usually more interested in what I'll be doing awake than what I'll be doing asleep, when I'm out. If I knew it was something multi-night, especially if I was going to be staying in the same place, I'd definitely bring the asymetric hammock, but... $30 vs $200 is a hell of an argument in its own right.

Actual straps sold for hammocks are made from polyester, which isn’t stretchy at all. Tie down straps from Harbor Freight are made of nylon and stretch quite a bit. Source: I’ve used both and learned from my idiocy.

I have not tried any asymmetrical hammock yet but I sincerely doubt the difference would be as flagrant as with tents. You would not want to be caught in a cheap tent during heavy rain but a cheap hammock and tarp will do just fine

Hammock camping is more modular. Tent hammocks exist, but plenty of people have a hammock, underquilt, bug net and tarp, all either purchased separately or some even sold together as a kit. Crua makes kits like that.

If you have a bunch of different pieces, then you can fix it or replace it as you notice problems, (holes in the net, pinholes or leaks in the tarp, etc...) Which is often more of a pain in the ass if it's part of a larger structure like a tent. Even in tent hammocks, the tarp is usually not directly connected to the hammock.

Also, the tarp tends to be hung in a nice tight plane, with less flat or low slope spots that a quarter or half done tent would have, so even if there are small holes, the water can run down the tarp easier.
Then there's that the hammock is off the ground, so you don't have to worry about water proofing a tent that's sitting in water, which has always been the problem point for my tents after enough use.

The normal suspension for the hennesy hammock sucks. All the trees in my area are big enough where you cant wrap your arms around them, so the webbing strap is too short. Im going to upgrade the suspension to a dutch buckle and continious loops. Any suggestions?

What do you consider cheap?
If you want cheap cheap, it's off to the hardware store, but if you want a "cheap camping tarp product" that is relatively light, it will cost you anywhere from twenty to fiddy buck
Just get whatever fits your budget but make sure it's at least 3m x 3m (I guess that's 10ft x 10ft)
