How do I find trails in NY state? Through books or is everything digital now? I don't know how to find the entrances to routes, and so on, and the camping spots.

I still enjoy paper maps. I usually print out what I need before a trip and while /out/ I leave my phone turned off inside my pack. And besides... fuck Alltrails.

I often end up going different places than I had originally planned and alltrails allows flexibility and I can do multiple trails in a day without needing a bunch of paper to keep track of.

You can still keep your phone in your pocket and simply use Alltrails if you need it or get lost but I like being able to see exactly where I am on a map in real time.

I typically just google the trail or the area I want to hike and follow the links to the trail club, conservency or state/national park maps. In the past I have also taken out trail maps and guides from the public library. I haven't used it myself, but I guess people also use gaia to plan routes and then print maps as well. I try to avoid Alltrails maps though.

Tell me about it. Even in the western catskills. In August I tried to go camping and every single one of those roadside campsites were taken ON A FUCKING TUESDAY. I've never seen it like this.

Go onto Facebook and type "New York hiking" into the internal search engine. Any number of hiking groups will pop up. The one I use in New Mexico is quite useful.
