Honestly there's too many activities to do outdoors that I enjoy to get bored. The only thing I would do indoors is going to the gym (unless it's summer and I can do calisthenics outside) and working.
So for me rural areas with low populations and people who enjoy doing shit outside is a plus for me.

>Brutal winter In what sense? Idk I live in Norway and enjoy the winter even though its dark (4h of daylight) cold, rainy and snowy by skiing, ice skating, randonee, etc. So I cannot see it worse there.
