unfortunately the times i've run into them have been during backpacking trips where I haven't been 100% confident on the ID without checking against books/pictures.

I went chant hunting today. Fell into a wasps' nest and got stung all over, had to come home. Nose is still swollen as fuck. Looking forward to trying again tomorrow though. Last year I got about 3kg of them.

No idea, I just tripped, fell and suddenly there were shitloads of wasps all round my face. Didn't even get a single mushroom, I was checking out a huge chant spot near my house but it hasn't fruited yet.

I usually find golden chants along the sides of roads and paths in mixed or coniferous woodland - but especially along the remnants of old, disused forestry tracks. They propagate mostly along ditches and verges.

As for winter chants, the one big patch of them I've found is around the bases of a couple of large pines.

I just use a sprayer to wash them before cooking. Just be quick about it.
You would also benefit from cutting the mushrooms at the stem rather than plucking them from the dirt and tossing the dirt on other mushrooms. If you throw a bunch of dirt on your mushrooms, of course they'll get covered in dirt.

I have an old soft-bristled toothbrush I scrub them with under running cold water. You have to be gentle but not as gentle as you might think, as you're probably going to have to be drying them afterwards anyway.

well there's no way to make a positive ID from just your one picture, but here's a guess.

Can you tell us:
>pictures of the underside of each
>spore prints for each
>where they were found (on wood, what kind of tree, on ground)
>what each onne smells like
>cut in half, what the flesh color looks like
that will get you a start, otherwise pic related is just a wild guess

these two interested me the most. they both have gills, but left has dark gills and right has white. left smells a bit nutty and right doesn't smell like anything. right has a ring on the stem. also, bottom left in the other pic is definitely a white cheese polypore, thank you

yeah the ones with pores instead of gills are boletes. I can't ID from these pictures those, with boletes you need the full experience of:

>spore print
>taste/smell (you bite a little bit to see if it is bitter or not, then spit it out).

Bolete identification is a whole art on it's own, the WPA mushroom club even has a tool dedicated to them alone

some of them are tasty and I've heard that in the Boston area there are a lot of Russians/eastern euros who will go around looking for them

I suspect at least one of the whitish ones are russula, you have to check the flesh and stem consistency. They're called "brittlegills" because the gills snap off easily. But i'm not 100% sure on that one.

Nice haul!
It was in insane day. Normally I'm tossing like 50% because theyre buggy but I swear I ended up only scrapping maybe 5% that day. Rarely a bug. Mostly just some slug bites which aren't an issue.
Recommending to you the same as I said to the other guy- CUT THEM AT THE STEM WHEN YOU HARVEST.
This gives 2 benefits:
1.) Your bag isn't full of dirt
2.)you can see right there if it's full of bugs or not. That way you don't get disappointed thinking you have a huge haul but find 70% is buggy when you get home.

Wasnt really looking out for anything, but spotted this mondo fucker clamboring over a downed tree and peeking down at the creekbed from a slightly higher vantage point. I don't know a thing about fungi but I figured you guys would appreciate it, there were four or so more within five or so feet of each other, I want to say about the size of a small plate and THICC.

That's probably a Boletus rubriceps, a kind of king bolete. Considered a choice edible and fetches a good price where it's legal to sell them. That said, I dry most of mine because I'm not a big fan of how they cook up fresh.

I live in Southern California so it would be extremely uncommon for that type to grow here. Also, because it’s a full-sun vegetable garden, they really onl grow at night and during the day it seems they get toasted by the heat.

Oysters was my gut reaction, been growing my own and they have been popping up everywhere around my house ever since, but these guys never get bigger than that which strikes me as odd. Pic related the top of that destroying angel.

I think I tossed some good ones today because I just couldn't be sure; the gills were soft and prominent enough to give me pause and the flesh wasn't perfectly white... The smell was right though. Unfortunately I didn't think to take a picture but if anyone has a good consistent rule/guide I'd be grateful!

Your area would help. For my area it can be Omphalotus Olearius (Western Washington State USA). I cannot think of anything other than (Common name Jack-o'-lantern) that for any other area. I get a ton in my front and back yard in October, however I do find them year long. In the hotter months they look more similar to chanterelles. With a bit of study between the two you will ID them with no problem.

Been thinking about trying my hand in growing some edible mushrooms for a while now, thinking portobellos in particular (though, graduating to a certain type of mushrooms with a more "magical" quality to them isn't entirely out of the question either). Figure I'd utilize an empty and literally just sitting there collecting dust fish tank to do so. I know absolutely nothing about actually propagating fungi. The tank is about 12" x 14" x 20", somewhere between 30-40 gal. I think? Would that work? I understand that environments have to be super sterile for successful fungus growth, but is that necessarily true?

If I were to just sanitize the tank as good as I can, then fill it up with soil, dirt, leaves, twigs, and all other sorts of dead organic material, then dropped the spores in, would that not work? What else is there to do?

Pls spoonfeed me.

Last week has been wet as fuck so I'm gonna check out the woods around wachusett reservoir later this week for early honey mushrooms, had a big haul there last year. Found this last season, didn't bring it home because I wasn't positive what it was. The gills looked sharp, like true gills and there wasn't any forking in them and they're the same color as the cap. My guidebook says that some hygrocybes look similar but none of them have the same colored caps and gills that I found. I'm leaning towards a cinnabar chanterelle but it's just for curiosity sake since it's long gone. Found it in a mixed forest near a creek bed in eastern Massachusetts

yeah the gills do look very hygrocybe-like, and they're flaking off like true gills. It looks kinda like craterelle or canthareullus minor but those have chanterelle ridges, not gills

Honestly the best ID feature at that point would be smell, if it smells like apricots than it's chanterelles. I'm leaning towards hygrocybe though, because the gills just don't look right, probably hygrocybe cantharellus

Went out with my dog looking for some Boletus and Blushers, maybe some canterelles.

Had some delicious raspberries, some blushers ( but too maggoty), nearly only Amanitas in the forest.

Got scared shitless when we turned a corner and bumped into a wild boar mother with two youngsters. They were maybe 5-10 meters from us. Luckily she decided to run and not attack.

I've tried refrigerating chanterelles before but they don't hold up that well, drying them really is the only tried and true way to preserve them.
I've heard freezing works but gives them a mild bitterness

Might this be destroying angel? Very common around here we have little cream coloured mushrooms that I imagine are some variety of ink cap, they always turn that black colour as they age. Those are what most of the mushrooms in this photo are, but the one in the lower left is different. Popping up in a spot where I walk mixed in are these other mushrooms that are brilliant white compared to the others and aren't turning black with age.

can anybody confirm these are reishi mushrooms (ganoredma lucidium)? I'm fairly sure, but just in case, is there any similar deadly mushrooms?
Found on a dying chestnut tree in a park.

as I was thinking of growing some mushrooms myself, this one included, I put them on a aluminum foil bottom down to collect the spores. is the a viable method of doing so? over night of staying like that I don't see anything except water moisture trapped beneath, so can it be these are too young to drop spores (based on a size of a white band on them).
also, can the small cutting be frozen, or at least kept in a fridge, to use as a future clone sample?

to be honest, more I look at it, I'm less sure its reishi..
It may be ganoderma applanatum, but I'm less and less sure it's even ganoderma.
I think it's fomitopsis pinicola (red belted conk), since it doesn't have a stem, grows from the three bark directly, and seems it doesn't bruise on the bottom part (ganoderma does?)

I've found them growing out the ground around hemlock stands before too, probably cause there is a buried decaying hemlock.

I mean none of the polypore/conks are poisonous (except hapilopilus) and they all have compounds that hippies and chinese will tell you can cure cancer so you could make a tea just like with ganoderma

Can it be too dry for mushrooms to fruit? I live in the PNW and we haven't seen rain here for weeks. Today I went out looking for mushrooms and only found one in an entire hour of searching. Usually I find loads.

So I had it confirmed by a grounds crew sent out to dig out the mycelium that this was indeed amanita ocreata. Part of me wishes I'd collected a little to save for nefarious purposes but I don't think I'd like the thought of it in my house anyways. It felt like almost an honor to see, on one hand so innocuous but also genuinely creepy how bright white it is.

Really? I'm surprised it doesn't really look like amanita to me, there's no partial veil and they're grouped a bit too densely for amanitas
Proper amanita ID you look and see if there is a vulva in the ground

Here's what it looks like on a phalloides (death cap), note the egg sac at the bottom in the dirt

Those look great. I cut the very ends of the stalks then run them under a light stream of water and just rub the dirt off. So far, I've only cooked or dried them immediately so idk if this works for keeping them fresh.
Maybe store them in a paper bag in the future, I think plastic holds too much moisture

Only thing I found in the last week. Pretty sure it is a Lycoperdon Pyriforme. It looked dry due to the drought. Picture was from two days ago, today it started to turn brown. Poked it and it released a impressive amount of spores. Pathetic for being in one of the best mushroom areas in the world. Come Fall I will be posting like a mad man. Jelly of everyone else doing well, keep it up I enjoy your finds.

Found these big things growing in my grass. The bigger one's cap is about the size of my hand with the fingers outstretched. The random ID app says they're false parasols but I imagine an app won't actually be very accurate. I can post pictures from other angles if it helps in identification.

I cut a bit out of it to see how it looked inside/ if there is any secretion, the pic is not the specific mushroom he ate a piece of, i just uploaded the one that seemed easiest to identify but they were all obviously of the same species.

They're thrown out now so a spore print is a no-go, but here's a picture of the underside. Found on a frequently watered patch of new lawn in San Diego, California. They popped up in the space of a few days

And here's the top. I rarely see mushrooms out here other than occasional little ones growing out of potting soil, so I was surprised to see something this big appear so suddenly.
I'll be keeping an eye out for more popping up. I know not to eat weird mushrooms but I have a few otherwise intelligent dogs that make poor eating decisions.

I found some bovista plumbea withering in someone's lawn yesterday. That's about all the news from my end.

I use those reusable mesh produce bags and tie them to a carabiner on my backpack once they're full though I don't know about multiple days. I'd try to limit your mushroom collecting to the last day, keeping them like that long-term will also make spore prints more difficult
