I don't think people actually enjoy hiking. I don't see any feasible way to enjoy being sweaty and having foot pain all to trek out into a desolate part of wherever you live where nothing exists, occasionally running into people who look like they unironically believe the most important issue facing Americans today is not enough legalized pot. I think people do this solely to take photos of vast quantities to post on Instagram so they can farm likes in between complaining about Donald Trump. This seems like something you're forced to do once civilization collapses, not something for fun, and even then you can prep for it by simply going to the gym.
