sleeping bag alone or + bivy?

just got the thermarest xtherm, it's amazing. Strongly recommend. Was sleeping out last weekend and despite it being ~3 degrees, I was still too warm, slept in a t shirt.

Really it is so much easier to just hike during the day.

winter increases the gear load a bit by default but brand names aren't a necessity. Plenty of decent smaller companies have products that check off the needs. Lightweight stuff usually ties to higher prices though which sucks.

For sleeping pads:
>1-2 is good for summer
>2-4 is good for shoulder seasons
>R > 5 or greater minimum for winter

from the math formula it obviously differs depending on temperature differential, i.e., so the bigger the difference between your body temperature and the ground, the more insulation you need.
The nice part is R value adds linearly, so a cheap Zlite (R=2) with 3-season inflatble (R=4) gives you a total of R=6, which is good enough for winter.

I go winter camping every few years.

IMO it's all about the people you are with, because you will spend a whole lot of time with them in very close quarters. I think that it is very important to have a good sense of where exactly you are going and why. Depending on the terrain and whether you are hiking, snowshoeing, or xc skiing, you might move as slowly as 1 mile/hour.

It is also more dangerous, so keep that in mind as well. Don't plan an odyssey. Your pack will probably weigh at least 50 lbs, so be prepared for that.

I've got the Browning side by side 0 degree f bag(s) in my car kit. A bit too big/heavy for me to use on much of a hike though, I have a lighter low temp bag for that.

Been piecing together my kit and tweaking it but here are the main components. Planning it from what I would want in my vehicle and then what I would want at a remote base camp and then what I would want on a light daypack. This system should allow flexible trips and timeframes, I would just need to have resupply hikes to my vehicle on longer trips.

I bought that exact pad, not kidding. It was really comfy but huge and heavy, so I was using it car camping. It was a massive static shock magnet. I kept shocking my gf, like I'd simply move around on it and it would build enough charge and I'd poke her and it would create a zap, kinda fun but got annoying after a while

I use a cot to keep the bed from leeching heat and sleep naked in a Kelty 0 degree bag. The shell doesn't have any sort of insulation and I don't use a heater. That set up has been comfortable down to about 10 degree nights in the desert but don't forget to piss before you undress and bed down. As long as your set up includes a good bag, separation from the ground, and a wind break then everything else is secondary.

I usually go every year. I do a hammock (heavily forested area) with a full length underquilt and a zero degree mummy bag. I use a Warbonnet Superfly in house mode. I've taken this setup down to 11F and been comfortable. Everyone I go with has a variation of this setup, but we'll usually get some new guys that spend their first trip in a tent. Most of the people you take aren't going to come next year.

I usually sleep clothed. Long johns or underarmor, sometimes both. I don't take an in shelter heat source, but I will throw a few hot hands in the sleeping bag a few minutes before I get in; they keep it pretty toasty.

winter can mean so much, just below 0 and still wet and soggy is much worse than -30 and dry. i did my worst winter camps in +2 and rain and my best in -30, all with the same clothing and gear (army).

Poncho ground cloth
Sleep in wool baselayer with possum hair socks
Fire outside for cooking
Sometimes will use second poncho as a bivy till i’m read to sleep tp prevent snow from getting on it

A tent won't do much better beside cutting wind from other directions. A balaclava or apline face mask thingy is normally how i handle it. This dude also has fire radiating heat and reflected by the tarp.

Not true, a good winter snowfly will help retain heat in extreme cold or winds. Pic related, my setup. You cannot see the front in this pic, but it has a sort of snow tunnel entrance, and you can fully bury the flaps. for more insulation, I was just lazy and tired in this camp. Also this tent has a vent on the other side.

I hate sweating in cold camping. As soon as you get out of your bag, you lose all of that heat you ramped overnight when the moisture on your body and the cold air takes it away. I’ll wrap myself in a natural fiber blanket layer and wear a hat on my head before tucking into my bag. It’ll wick moisture away from me and I’ll be able to emerge much drier than without the layer. Sure I’ll overpack for winter, but I always come out toasty and ready for the day with energy to spare. It also makes the morning piss that much more satisfying and easier.

The new mats fit just about exactly, I won't always take 2 out but good to know if I want the extra insulated floor or am with someone. This trip my dog got to enjoy the 2nd mat.

FYI Luxe is shit. Its just one guy who imports crappy Chinese gear and marks it way up. Buddy of mine had to harass him for a week to get his dead on arrival tent fixed (arrived without timeouts, guess they forgot to sew them.) Mine had guy points tear out on my first trip. Also, the ripstop isn't. They're terribly made and there's no aftermarket support. The nortents or whatever are way better.

Right because it holds the air, which is jusy insulation at work. Point is that if its 0F out you address the face the same way. I can actually feel the slight increase in temp under my tarp, although not sealed like your tent.

Autumn/winter camping is just juggling multiple layers between body to light closest layer, to thicker warming layers and waterproof layer. Same with shelter, the main goal is dry and maybe some insulation/tent heating if the you want the tent warm.

I camped out on my land in northern Minnesota with a tarp in winter a few years back. Set it up as a lean to with an inflatable pad, 0 degree bag, and an upside down fire nearby. It probably got down to 5 or 10 American below that night, but I was ok.

I haven't slept out in winter since because I bought a camper and sleep in that now but I might do it again this year since I actually have days off now with my new job.

I kind of want to try winter camping but I’m in the mountains and even in spring or fall it gets pretty damn cold. Seems like in the middle of winter it would be annoying.

I'm sure it's warm even without being ASTM verified but fuck that for anything but car camping. R6 is recommended down to -20F so I'd rather just layer a cheap insulated inflatable with a foam pad and still end up with half the weight

*assuming they fit together and one or you doesn't compress the other or turn into a bodybag. And assuming a reasonable temp rating and your own comfort level. You can also unzip one and use it as more of a blanket on top. 35F isn't cold enough to worry to much about combining hoods.

I went once last season, slept in the back of me jeep with just folding bed and a few blankets.
I dont bother heating my weekend home so I have a bit of experience sleeping down into at least -2c with no heat. Just a lot of wool blankets and a heavy summer sleeping bag spread over the top.

I think I'm going to go a lot more this season. the problem is mainly the fuel cost to get out to where the snow is in a 4x4. Shit sucks down $300 in fuel easy. Maybe I'll have to buy some snow shoes and just leave car somewhere safe and walk out. can get up to 0.5M of snow so meh

tried sleeping outside tonight. it was forecast minimum temperature of 9 Celsius but I swear to god it was a lot colder than that, I couldn't even sleep. need to get a thermometer to I can figure out the accuracy of the forecasts.

cooking time I try to consolidate as much as possible, thoroughly clean/pack/airseal anything too food scent. I carry a .45 cal glock as well just in case but so far just the extra care keeping food-related items clean/stored I haven't even had an encounter in any of my trips.

Like the other anon said mostly wind. A lot of people think wind just makes you feel cold, but fact is it is cooling you down RAPIDLY. By making the air around you more still you allow it to heat it and you up more. Also it reflects heat if you have a fire. Though if I were that anon I would have reinforced it a bit more with some more branches and then snow to make it completely windproof
