I think the reason homesteading is considered a larp is because it is almost impossible to be truly self sufficient. Growing food for the year round is difficult simply because of the work of preserving and planning involved. Too many people have forgotten that most crops especially vegetables come ready in summer and autumn and that's it. Sure with poly tunnels you can grow stuff in midwinter but that's a whole other level of difficulty and encourages pests to survive the winter and attack the next year's crops. Still most dedicated individuals can do pretty well growing maybe half their food supply, with staggered potato harvests, salad and cabbage through the warm months, kale and brussel sprouts for the autumn and judicious use of the forgotten hardier crops. It's a start. So when someone says they're going off grid and living off the land I assume they're full of shit, but when they supplement their diet with home grown and preserving techniques and reduce their reliance on industrial society somewhat, I respect.

The solar "market" is actually a cartel.
Private companies bought a monopoly from the state and so have no reason to negotiate with anyone.
Serving their own interest they will buy solar at a higher rate, then when idiots invest in panels the company will halve the rate paid.

The issue with solar is that you can only really sell to the grid; and the grid is a monopoly.

I'm tired of my city ignoring the homeless people. If I were to make kits that I just hand out to any homeless I see, what are some practical items that would actually help. Tarps? Sources of fire? I'm trying to make a difference.

I will be breeding them this spring but it will be my first time. I have leghorns, rhode island reds, and a rooster I got free off craigslist. I also had Bielefelders and Wyandottes in the past. I don't really know shit but the leghorns are the best layers (that's the breed factory farms use) and the RiR are almost as good but I think the RiR eggs taste better, maybe it's just in my head though.

Maybe just buy less, for instance buy in a cheaper state if you can, and if you have to commute to work then I’m not sure.

But I’d buy less so you have more for your house. $70k seems not as good for your house. Maybe do $150k for land and $150k for your house or whatever you can manage. I just wouldn’t go too far with land when you need some nice things for your house.

Off grid doesn't mean completely cut off from society, it just means not connected to the electrical grid. Different people take it farther or shorter, but almost all of them will go to town once in a while to stock up on necessities. Might be once a week for groceries, might be once a year for bulk loads of salt, flour, fuel etc.

Reminder to any aspiring homesteaders expecting a real collapse to get something for entertainment. Playing cards, a chess board, a musical instrument, etc. My setup is sufficiently comfy so I’ve personally been stocking up on hardcover books for fun and future homeschooling. So call me schizo, but I just don't have peace of mind given my situation:

>Going down IT path, wanted to be a pentester eventually
>Noticing Fed's fuckery is destroying the dollar and might lead to Great Depression on steroids
>Want to take up activities that teach me at least basic prepping like gardening, storing nonperishable food somewhere in the house and most importantly learning from somebody who knows what they're doing
>Looking into a good survival school nearby, has a good instructor
>No chance in hell parents would allow me to go over a weekend or two to learn bushcraft / survival because it costs money, would be a waste of time in their eyes, stupid hobby or whatever they want throw to antagonize my non-normie activities. (But me going out with father's friend's son to destroy my lungs with hookah would be deemed an OK use of my time and money?)

I'm not 100% certain shit will hit the fan, but I really like having insurance because life is cruel. What do anons? Am I just a paranoid-schizo or are my fears justified? I just kinda of really don't want my family to die prematurely over the Fed's horseshit and this joke of an economic system.

being self sufficient in terms of income, just by living off the land is very hard if you dont have a large investment for land or equipment. but if you just want to feed yourself its easy as shit.
110 frost free days here. zone 3. tried to grow all my own vegetables. pretty easy. only bought oil, flour, spices, yeast shit like that. bought whole animals off farmers. $50 a month grocery bill.

>spaghetti squash will also last a whole year too if well cured. can be peeled and eaten fresh like carrot sticks
>there are long storing versions of most vegetables that will last into the new year even in my short season. beets, carrots, mangels, tomatoes, turnips, parsnip, radishes, sunchoke even apples and tomatoes like giallo a grapolli.
>after that, there is sprouts, microgreens and fermented foods. container has to be airtight to last.
>one of my favorites is forced shoots. lots of perennials like rhubarb, dandelions, lovage, can be packed into pails with a little soil. whenever you want some shoots you just bring a pail indoors.

Been wanting to contriboot to this general for a while now.
A little background:

My wife, children and I live on 50 acres in zone 7b. Been at it about 3 years now. Mostly mature forest with some pasture I've been reclaiming. I harvest hardwood from the property for winter heat. Currently grow a smol garden just to cut down on grocery bill. Wife does lots of canning and preserving, she makes a bitchin salsa, lady ashburnham and homemade relish. We have 12 laying hens and a rooster and a few ducks. Just bought an incubator, going to try hatching our own this spring.

I want to keep expanding but damn, it's hard when I'm still unfortunately stuck working a full time job, and have young kids and babies. It gets overwhelming sometimes, but its rewarding most days. I've got a million and a half projects on the go all the time. Currently building a sawmill so I can build a barn/shop sometime within the next 10 years.

Main goals for this spring are to get our greenhouse set up, and a seperate shelter for the ducks as i want to raise some for meat. Currently were just housing them with the laying birds, but the coop is getting cramped.

I really want to learn more about agriculture and gardening. I'll admit I'm pretty much a noob but understand the basics. I want to be more efficient and have been reading a lot about no-till methods. I plowed a new 30 x 30 food plot just before winter set in, soil seems pretty sandy, and will definitely need help.

We have a couple tractors and attachments, and im an experienced mechanic/welder/fabricator

I welcome all questions and criticism, I'm trying to learn, but theres so much to learn sometimes I dont know where to start.

Coop is 8x12 with a small 8x12 run. We free range them for the most part though, only really use the run in the winter months. Were going to hatch another batch of laying hens this spring to double the flock. As it is right now I'm selling most of the eggs they lay while saving some for ourselves, which more than pays for their feed. The demand for free range eggs has surpassed what I was expecting and I have a few steady customers just from word of mouth. Duck eggs are big seller too

Still brainstorming ideas for a duck shelter. Maybe repurpose a portable garage frame and beef it up a little. Definitely something with a dirt floor, ducks are messy as all hell

I gotta have meat, but yeah I give them a good life. When the laying stop laying I'll try them in a slow cooker or for soup meat, or feed them to my dogs. I hate to see any waste. I think everybody should have a few chickens in the back yard.

I also hunt for meat. Usually send a few wild ducks to the freezer, maybe a partridge or two. Looking to bag my first deer this year too

Pic related, what I woke up to this morning. Deep freeze and blowing snow all night. Drifter nearly 2 feet in some places, so i got a few hours of plowing to do today after chores, then laying some tile in my mudroom this afternoon. Never laid ceramic before but I should be able to figure it out.

The best you can do is supplement an income with a homestead lifestyle and decrease your dependence on corporations and government. I've never eaten any of it, I read that it's edible raw, but cooking the flesh of the fruit makes it sweeter. You can eat the seeds raw, but a fellow could also press them into a cake and cook them. It can grow anywhere in the state if the soil is right, which I think is pretty nifty. Assuming one could, having a dozen or so of these fellas growing sounds pretty nice. I think it only takes a few years to mature too.

I found land, built a house, and moved out into the woods 3 years ago. and yes,l absolutely used youtube to learn all manner of things to DIY (plumbing, electrical, irrigation, solar, etc.. fuck i even learned how to drywall my garage and turn it into a gym). Not its not, not if you have enough land. My family are 3rd gen farmers and they have over 1k acres. HOWEVER, by my calculations, if you had 12 solid acres of good fertility in an anually watered area? Homesteading is more than possible. You need a certain quantity of land to make it work or else it wont at all. You definitely need an income from selling farmgoods though. Theres nonway around it, unless someone breeds all your animals for free.

You can easily grow food year round with a couple of well-built, heated greenhouses. But really you dont have to, because as long as you make enough of a profit selling your harvests, you can just buy everything you need in the winter. But yeah if you want to be realy self sufficient, have greenhouses.

BTW, if you want to feed your poultry year round, you can have a large pond with fish stocks. That can keep your ducks alive without needing to buy them live protein. Everything else well just store from the harvest.

Checked, right now I'm working a delivery job (23.5CAD/h) so that within a year I'll be able to partially pay the brand new sprinter van (costs around 50k-60k total), I'm thinking this summer I'll be able to start working on the car. To give an estimation as to when I'll stop working altogether, I'd say in about 4-5 years I'll have enough money for 40 years of NEET life. If I ever need to work again for any reason, I can just work part time and still make more than enough money to sustain my life.

If you have a properly insulated and ventilated chicken coop there's no need for heaters. Their body heat will keep each other warm. Just select a chicken breed that can withstand your local climate and they'll be fine, a space heater will just be a fire hazard.

Not to sound like I'm contradicting myself, but a heated waterer is actually the best option if the coop can't stay warm enough to prevent the water from freezing. The heater in the waterer isn't a fire hazard in the same way as a space heater because it doesn't get nearly as hot and all the elements are sealed away, though you do have to secure it in a way that the chickens can't knock it over.

New Mexico indigenous construction was literally straw and coliche. You can do the same, don't forget the waddle for your daub. Considering the climate your house will dry fast and won't rot for decades.

Classic style is timber frame with waddle and daub panels finished with plaster coating the outside.

Figuring out the roof is probably going to be more work.

Reducing the moisture content of your stored grain is the most important part. If a weevil gets in there it doesn't matter how clean the bucket was. The less oxygen sealed into that container the better.

Property taxes (school taxes really) are extremely high upstate. Even in district with shitty schools you will be paying among some of the highest effective property tax in the country. In a good school district it's maximum LOL. My mom pays 20k on 500k.

Even empty rural land you are going to be paying at least 2%, unless you get an ag exemption.

It's also a state run by smoothbrain downstaters. Unfortunate, because western NY is otherwise amazing outside of the cities.

That kind of goes for all the posts in here, if you have a good relationship with neighbors or a local community, you can afford to specialize in certain things. Some people have more room for growing cereals/grains, some have experience raising animals, etc.

Am looking at buying a really cheap farmhouse with about 8 acres of land around it. Am in a third world shithole and the place was suspiciously cheap, so I asked around and turns out that the water situation there is bad.
No rivers nearby and the utilities often cut off at the worst times, so planting anything that needs watering in the summer is a headache.

Am thinking of buying it anyway, getting bigass cisterns and filling them when the water is running, but I need to ration that shit hard.
Any suggestions on what to do with it? As long as it pays off the small loan I will take, I dont mind planting just one acre and leaving the rest wild for now.

Dig any agricultural pond. Line it with clay or one of the other methods to water proof it. Plant some trees around it for shade.

I live in Paducah which is about as far west as you can get in Kentucky. It’s beautiful for sure. My uncle lives about 30 minutes outside of Owensboro and all his neighbors are dying because they’re old so look up the counties surrounding Davies and you might find a good piece of land and tons of jobs if you’re close enough to commute to Owensboro.

Trees absorb water, tons of it. If you plant them where the roots can reach the pond, they'll drink it up. Make sure not to over do it, and make sure you don't plant especially thirsty varieties.

You have to dredge them every once and awhile. But that's all free very good fertilizer. Depending on how deep and your climate they'll dry up every year but you'll have the water from your rainy season to use for your dry.
Ducks will dirty up a water source very quick. But it's manageable. There's lots of ways to optimize a pond. Lots of free info online.

Depends on several factors: age, time and energy requirements of your job, etc. etc. But it's easy enough to find out. Start volunteering at a local community garden and after doing 40+ hours a week, see how you feel about spending your free time tilling soil and planting whatever. I'm fairly sure I wouldn't want to do it, though.

If the goal is self sufficiency, don't try to do it all at once right out of the gate; work on replacing things you buy with things you can produce yourself (such as food, water, electricity). although with electricity unless you are willing to tolerate a drastic decline in standard of living, you'll need to be on the grid; right now batteries are just too fucking expensive. Solar panels are pretty cheap at least.

I'm on 7 forested acres, and work remotely as a dev; so using my income to try to develop my land as best as possible. started with a small garden, and have been able to develop our spring for irrigation with a solar powered pump and will be expanding the garden this summer. other projects are more water storage to get through the summer, as during july/august we have to have water trucked in when the spring dries up.

by far the biggest hurdle is finding a smallish plot of land that is affordable and suitable for growing. you will need water, be it a well or a spring, you need good southern exposure for sunlight. it also has to be zoned / permitted for a dwelling. land that fits those criteria is kinda pricey, and as things develop politically/economically/socially will only get more expensive.

all in all it's a good hobby and pretty rewarding. be prepared to have to learn just about every type of DIY skill under the sun though.

sprinters are known to have an issue with blowing glow plugs and cracking the threads and head. there are kits to re-tap and reinforce a larger size up but just know this when you get involved, some aren't safe to drive away in depending on the damage's severity

im counting on amazon and DHL to start auctioning off their transits and sprinters within the next 3-5 years. while they have more issues, maybe lackluster engine performance, all the maintenance will have been done and the worst of the worst will be naturally culled out by thousands of miles of deliveries

as for space saving, just get something bigger. build cabinets or get a lot of hooks to hang shit. install propane and water outside on roof or tail racks. i dont have the luxury of skill/money to make cabinets or have a tall headliner so i installed my water supply overhead in a 10' DWV, above my panels, and plumbed thru the roof. ama, what worked for me varies significantly from what r*ddit or YT will tell you. it holds 28L which lasts me about 2 weeks on 1 refill, 1 week if i shower, or i can stretch it up to a month worst case scenario.

I found the perfect home and I'm placing my offer tomorrow.
They are almost exactly like me. I wanted chickens and bees and they have that. I wanted a creek to draw water from and they literally have a big pond that is auto-filled by the creek and stocked with bass and catfish and then the water is pumped for crop irrigation. EXACTLY what I wanted.
Then they have a nice home with a gazebo and a dock on the pond and two separate two car garage buildings I'm converting to guest rooms since the home has a two car garage too.
5 acres. Plenty of space for solar for the battery packs and a well. There's even a propane tank rigged up for the fireplace but it can burn wood too. They even have fucking GIGABIT internet like wtf. Jesus came down and built this property for me.
