No stones on shore, its all forest lakes here.
Think Finaland but zero rocks around.
Also not packing a saw - the whole idea is to avoid carrying wood processing tools to save weight.

Maybe you could use a spike and a piece of wood (from forest) to drive it into the ice? Not sure how large the spike would have to be. I think the maximum size would be something comparable to a railroad spike, in which case you'd only really be shaving off 1lb or so of weight as opposed to just bringing a hatchet. I dunno.

if your goal is drinking water, look for an inflow to the lake since the areas with running water will freeze last, and the ice will be thinnest. otherwise bring tools

I don't think it's worth the effort desu. Just melt some snow or look if you can chip away at the shore, the ice should be thin there.

yeah that's called an ice fishing spud bar.
Though they're pretty heavy, and at that point you might as well bring a lightweight ice axe

If it’s only about 100mm of ice, a sturdy sheath knife like an AKM bayonet is probably the lightest option, but chopping through ice thicker than the length of a blade is an ordeal and it had better be a good, sturdy knife.

I did it ice fishing when I got to the lake and realized that my auger was still at home. I chopped a hole in 6 inches of ice with a kbar and caught some crappies. Getting a hole big enough hole to fish through was a chore, and I only cut two holes (one for me, one for my bro), but it did work and we did catch some damn nice crappies. If you’re just using a lifestraw or whatever, you don’t need to cut a big hole, just enough hole to let water through.

Lay on your belly and use an ice pick grip.

The fire ones are stupid but for the amount of survival knife videos out there its quite shocking no one actually tried larping on ice. Same goes for axes/hatchets.

Large iced over lake will soak up all the heat and dissipate it without a dent.

You can math it out if you want. Find the volume of ice times energy needed to melt it. Find the heat-energy carrying capacity of rock. Find the heat loss into the air temperature based off humidity and barometric pressure.

Firstly as noted in op, there are no stones around. This is not a larp just the reality of flatlands in eastern Europe.

Here you go famalm. It's snowing on the other side of the lake.
It's comfy when everything's frozen, but it usually thawns a bit during the day and freezes at night. If you get two days with no freezing temperatures everything becomes a fucking swamp.

You can chop through ice no matter how thick really, with any sharp or blunt object, like one of those sticks u drag urself out of the water if u fall through, about 2cm slightly sharp steel, I've chopped through ice 15cm thick with one, just takes a little time but it works since ice shatters

Try something like this but with a removable head and a pick instead of one of the sides. I have one like that and it's amazing for ice. There are no tricks it's just hard work if you don't have the tools.

Don't listen to the larper. Knife won't work for chopping through 4" of lake ice. With a heavy enough knife and soft ice you might eventually get through, but enjoy denting or snapping your knife blade. Hard ice don't even bother.

And anyone saying fire or hot stones works is an urbanite larper whose only outdoors "experience" is watching bushcraft videos on youtube

Its dusk and we were setting up camp when corner of the sky turned red. As we were admiring it it started snowing at the opposite side of the lake so we scrambled for cameras.

Ofc mine was left at auto shutter speed, 10k+ iso and continuous af. So the big flakes are out of focus snowflakes at 1/30s and small grain is thanks to iso 12k at f5.6... at least it got nice colors..

Also for all the stalkers this is 20km away fom Chernobyl's "sister plant" in Ignalina so it might have been a blowout.

OP needs a tool of some kind. There's no good way of breaking a frozen lake without tools. You can make do with the wrong tools, but you need something.

You can make life easier by finding a bubble, if you have the time to search. Sometimes air bubbles form at the surface which will be easier to break. But you'd be relying on something that doesn't always occur.

Because
a) only sleeping in one place for a single night
b) need fire for dinner and breakfast so that's two fires
c) it rains during the day and freezes during the nigh so woods are soaked and this weather will continue for months to come

Now i can larp away whatever little daylight i have by building two fires with frozen rotten deadfall ever day or just use my multi fuel stove. This is not some comfy youtube snow camping this is camping duing the shitiest weather you can imagine. Moisture is everywhere and weather goes from fogy rain to flash freeze on hours notice.
