What's a good waterproof glove for british weather, something I can throw on if it starts raining when there's wind chill, and put my tent up with if it's raining and cold

All waterproof gloves are a meme. They have way too much surface area where the stitching will leak eventually. "Waterproof" mittens are much better in my experience, but obviously way less dexterous. Look into mitten shells for a modular approach, where the outer shell is the waterproof part

I would agree. I have a pair of sealskins and they haven't failed yet but the outer layer soaks up a shit load of water and chills the hands as much as if they were wet. I now use a pair of mountain equipment waterproof shell mittens over them and they're a far better option

Mitts will usually fail too, since DWR gets overwhelmed and you apply more pressure than the membrane can handle (1000hydrostatic head is easily exceeded by pressing down on wet grass or mud, or your wet pole handles); and often the seams and membrane leak from the abrasion and abuse that jackets don't get. There's no ideal solution. At a pinch, ziplocks or plastic bags work pretty well.

I think the best way to keep hands warm and dry are pogies around your trekking poles - allow some venting out the bottom hole, but completely cover the top with a warm air bubble

Fine for a half day trip, but would never dry out and be fiddly, damp and sweaty inside even if they didn't actually leak (which they will) and that surface fabric will be soaked and cold, so a crap choice for longer hikes. Think of gloves like your body layering system - base layer (liner gloves), fleece (mittens) if needed, shell to block wind and rain and trap heat (waterproof mitts). Decathlon sell some decent waterproof mitts

desu if the peaks wasnt so bleak it would be much much nicer. If all the farmers fields and shit were reforested/ a more lush and diverse landscape was revived then it would be way nicer. Just my personal thoughts.

That's true, especially the part about the chuffin farms. It can be bleak, but it's a beautiful bleak. I've not seen or felt that desolate and harsh aspect much in other parts of the country.

alright lads, i'm interested in getting into hiking / camping on the weekends, hike in, camp and hike out kind of thing. i've got the peak district on my doorstep but i've wanted to spent time in the highlands for a long time too. used to be in the scouts as a kid but i reckon i'd be useless at any of it now.

can anyone recommend some books or sites to read up on everything? a comprehensive A-Z of how not to fall and break my legs or catch hypothermia. i was looking at the haynes 'outdoor adventure' guide which looked alright? just don't want to buy all the gear and have no clue how to use it properly. cheers

well-draining trail runners or boots (imho Goretex lined shoes are a meme as the lining fails long before the shoe is dead, they fill up and never drain, don't breathe well and they are too sweaty in summer). The only exception is a wellie or a proper waterproof combo like boots and Berghaus yetis which basically turn footwear into wellies (incredibly hard to put on, many people permanently glue them onto boots).
waterproof socks + warm inner socks, or neoprene socks if constantly getting wet
gaiters for bushwacking and muddy bogs, keeps legs and feet warmer

read ukclimbing for good forum chats about gear and techniques

Learning bog crossing technique (plant id to spot firm ground)
Strengthen your ankles
Never bonk, keep your energy and hydration up
Trekking poles are great for saving knees. spikes or crampons necessary depending on ice/snow, ice axe for self arrest on angled snowfields and b2 level boots for ascending and crossing steep snow, b3 for proper climbing, but do a mountaineering course if you're gonna touch that stuff. don't overestimate the abilities of microspikes, and always pack a spare set of clothing for night.
Bring a bothy bag or use your tent fly to have a dry, windproof little haven to get out of the wind for a break. Hot water bottle at night, can also light a tea candle in your tent (don't die of carbon monoxide, vent a little) to push out condensation and really warm up

Aren't trail runners a bit of a meme in the UK? Like they're fine on the PCT where they'll dry out in a number of hours, but would take days to dry out hiking here in the winter.

Nah I use trail runners all year round. I used to use boots but if you get water inside you've basically got a portable bog water foot spa for days.
For trail runners in winter I found that on groomed trails it's fine, each footstep will "press" the water out quite well. If going on boggy ground all day and keen to keep socks dry, just wrap your socks in sealskinz waterproof socks or a durable sandwich bag (freezer bags are preferable) if you're a poorfag.
picrel is the other week and I had dry socks all day

There's a surprising amount of organisations, especially contractors rather than charities/trusts, carrying out /out/ style work accessible to newbs. Check the ones near you

Spent a day and night at Greensykes Bothy (Dumfries & Galloway) with the mrs earlier this week. What a charming spot it is. She chilled out while I went for a run around the forestry roads that line the hills out there. Then at night we got royally shitfaced and enjoyed a fire together.

Will definitely visit again.

I live somewhat near the New Forest in Hampshire and have gone there a couple times.
I like the idea of doing conservation volunteering but the whole place seems like a commercialised patch of shit. Just logging and tourist trails. I suppose that's what private property enclosure will do to nature though.

Which bit did you go to? There’s loads of decent places to go that are full of old growth. Obviously don’t just follow the paths as well, that’s pleb tier. As soon as you head off them the amount of people you see basically drops to zero. I will say though watch out for ticks in the long grass when the weather turns warm and wet. Because of all the deer there are absolutely tonnes of them.
