/o/ seethes over crossovers...

So I'm asking you guys. What's are some compact-mid size SUVs/ CUVs to look at for desert off road camping? The areas I want to camp at usually have the typical Jeep Wrangler, 4Runner, or Tacoma. All of which way outside of price range. The region has some steep ruts and rocks that obviously need some ground clearance and suspension flex. My buddies Subaru did fine in the area but I know they don't really articulate over rocks n stuff like a solid axle vehicle.
95% of the trails is weak easy mode any car could do, but there's some washes and ravines I'm worried about going alone.

Anyways, is it wrong to look for any alternatives? I know a Wrangler is complete overkill. It's flat desert with a couple dips and rocks that would stop sedans. No pics of these areas
