Hey /out/, is it a (really) bad idea to buy decent boots second-hand, such as on eBay, even if they're from a great brand and/or look to be in good working order?

Not that bad of an idea, but I think that you want a good fit....

It depends on what kind of boot, to some extent. If big winter boots you can have some more room to pad with socks and such, but I'd be weary of buying any shoe, especially for use outside, without trying them on.

But really, whatever!

No, I know about the inherent risk; I ask because I just stumbled upon, on eBay, a pair of very well-intact Filson high-top "hunting" boots (the Made-in-America line), and they are of very high craftsmanship, and I've been in need of new boots for a while now. The only risk is that, from what I've researched, they're not entirely waterproof, which is kind of important, as I intend to use them as hiking boots primarily (yes, I'm aware of how stupid that sounds)

I never buy footwear second hand because everyone has different and everyone breaks in their shoes differently as a result.

Yeah pretty much, you need to break in the shoes so they fit your feet properly. Even if they are the same size, people have different shapes on their feet, weight difference and such.
Walking around in boots that someone else has worn in is a recipe for blisters.

Dont buy used boots, unless they are virtually unworn.

Used boots have broken in to someone elses feet and can cause foot problems, especially with the foot-bed.

Using secondhand shoes or boots are always a bad idea. The upper may still be intact and new, the sole however is most cases are worn out in the heel and forefoot and this might throw your balance off by bowing your legs out. This might not sound like nothing, but on a two mile hike you'll feel pressure and pain in your knees and hips. The insoles are probably compressed too, so no cushion for your foot.

To cut it short, saving a few dollars now will cost you 3x more later on in your life. Always buy new shoes or boots.

There are cheaper boots out there that are new, as a student you don't need 400$ boot. You can get decent boots at half that price, and at least you will break those in for your own feet.

When I bought my Merrell sandals at the thrift store they looked practically NEW! I took the time to check for size and at $15 snapped them up!

Then, wearing for the first time /out/, I found just how nice the Merrell sandal foot bed really is!

Nice unworn, unbroken in, fresh, virgin foot bed.

Ahh..

Good luck buying footwear on line without test fitting, esp. used.

I got lucky when I bought my Bates R.A.T. boots from lapolicegear.com for $40, just lucky I went up 1/2 size.
