Can I drink lake water when using pic rel and prefiltering it through a bandana? They claim it kills bacteria, viruses and cysts

Most filters are out of stock in my country rn and orhers are extremely overpriced. I need something quick for an upcoming trip

Cryptosporidium is found in urban centers. It’s spread via human feces. I mean it can be found in the wild but it’s pretty rare. If you’re in Europe it’s probably more of a problem since they live like rats stacks on top of each other.

Yeah, it calls out giardia and crypto as something it kills but says nothing about how quickly it does so. The 15 min sentence only mentions bacteria and viruses.

Also not sure where that info came from because the packet instructions say 4 hours.
They also specify an opaque container which voids all my drink bottles.

If your water is probably clean anyway and you just want a placebo then, yeah, 15 min is probably fine.

You can but I forget how long you need to leave it exposed and whether certain plastics blocked the radiation. Probably best left for when you're spending an extended period at a single campsite although IIRC you could theoretically lash a couple of bottles to the outside of your pack and reasonably expect them to be safe to drink by the end of the day if you're hiking somewhere sunny enough.

When I was in middle school I used to go swimming in an old quarry a lot that had sketchy ass water. One time I accidentally drank a mouthful and felt sick an hour later. Got home, threw up a few times, got an extreme headache that lasted for days, all while throwing up every once in a while, 40c body temp. Everything lasted for a week, but I barely remember anything. Only remember the extreme headache and a few flashes here and there.

Don't remember if the doc was able to identify what it was exactly.

i live in north italy and most stream water here has passed near some farmland.
i am scared that the nitrates and other nasty chemicals such and cancer inducing insecticides might have reached the water stream from nearby farms. how do you even filter that?

those pills won t make the nitrates disappear.

thats why i bring water with me or refill at fountains. no way i ll drink the water found in natural rivers

Chemicals can be filtered with filters which use active coal. Katadyn makes little black filters filled with coal, basically just a plastic housing, that you can connect to your sawyer. They also fit right into the wide mouth opening of your nalgene.
