Trying to decide between a jetboil flash or pocket rocket.. what do you use and what do you recommend.

We'll make this a general /out/ cooking. Only fatties post recipes in here.

just buy a BRS 3000T its 15 dollars, ultralight, and just as good as my pocket rocket. its an outdated boomer rec these days, BRS 3000T killed it.
i don't like jetboils for backpacking. great dayhiking luxury though.
if you really wanted to you could buy a generic wood burning stove, an esbit medium stove, a brs 3000t, and make a diy alcohol stove for $10 more than a pocket rocket costs. that would cover you for virtually all conditions except for very high altitude deep winter stuff where you actually need a remote canister.
also if you need a wind screen, titanium foil sheets are $4 on aliexpress. you save like 20 dollars if you stamp the holes in it yourself.

I use the pocket rocket deluxe because it has the igniter on it and a wider burner. I've used both, my friend has a jetboil, they both do a good job of boiling water. The soto windmaster is a cool design because the arms can come off so it packs very small

just depends on your priorities. i'd rather have my brs when i'm with other people and my pocket rocket when i'm solo and its all i got. i'd say if you value reliability then the next best budget option is finding a pocket rocket 2 on sale, they go for about 35 all the time, and deal with the extra weight/bulk.

You’re right about the upside down canisters. That’s why the stands exist. I’ve heard they can work to 0°F, which is a little nutty.

But he’s right about elevation. It’s a myth that isobutane canisters won’t work at elevation. I read somewhere that it started in the 70’s, when people were using butane which starts to fail right at freezing temps. It wasn’t the elevation that caused it but the drop in temperature from lapse effect. I’ve used isobutane at 11kft without any issues.

Pocket rocket is cool is my main go to. With a canister and a cup that it can fit in Toaks titanium cup and a spork are all you need. I also sometimes go out with a wood gas stove i got a knock off of the solo stove brand. Depends on where I'm going to be and how much i want to carry even bring a gsi kettle if im going to have company.

brs, pocket rocket, soto, all of these suck especially when you're tired from long days adventure. cbf to wait 5 minutes for the water to boil or accidentally spill my pot of water. jetboil is fast, easy to use, never spilled, and works efficiently than all of the above. for these reasons alone I would say jetboil is worth the money and the small weight penalty.

The old school Pocket Cooker camp stove is probably the best one IMO, as its enclosed design concentrates the heat up to the pot being cooked but with any wood burning camp stove, (especially something like the BioLite) I’d suggest bringing along a pair of ratcheting pruning shears to quickly and easily cut up the fire wood (and remember, get enough wood ready before you start cooking).

I bought one when it came out in 05/06. Last all this time.

Its been on two , 2000+ mile thru hikes and numerous other adventures.

Gf has replaced her jetboil twice now, she bought it in 2015.

Those shit Chinese ones you get off Amazon,, they will break. Everything from the threads stripping, to the cheap metal just snapping from constant heating.

I watched quite a few videos on stoves and finally decided on this system.

I would have went with a Soto Windmaster if it was in-stock at my local place, but the SnowPeak was slightly cheaper and just as good in my opinion. TREK900 pot, not quite sure if it was 'the best choice', but it fits the fuel/stove, a backup lighter, and a CanCrunch accessory along with some hotlips. Even then it has extra room. The "lid" doesn't really snap it closed or keeps it sealed without the included carrying bag which is a bit annoying. but whatever, the titanium set was $50 which was fairly cheap; i wanted one with a 'skillet' top instead of the strainer type top.
And its not Toaks with a fucking foot fetish image on the side, which is a plus.

I got my stove and pot setup to be 15 oz.
1lb, 11oz with the fuel canister inside.

Is that a decent weight for a cooking set for backpacking/through hiking? I could get rid of my butane-zippo which would save 2oz, but I'd need to swap it with some sort of backup ignition. The stove has a piezo, but I don't want to only rely on that as my only ignition source.

For contrast my fancy feast stove with an Imusa pot, pot lid, soda can wind screen, and fuel for 4 days is about 7oz. So if the convenience of 4 saved minutes to boil water is worth nearly half a pound for you then yeah.

The great thing about the fancy feast setup is that it cost like $10 if you already have a pot.

clippers are a good zippo -> bic middle ground and weigh the same as bics (and the mini versions weigh the same too)
basically a refillable bic you can swap out and adjust the flint on. takes the same size flint as someone's old dead bic. you lose the wind-proofness but they don't ever leak.

if you wanna be really hardcore ultralight just cold soak but that's miserable. i can't thru hike like that but i can handle a section on cold soaking.

I got a jetboil because it was cheaper than buying a pocket rocket and a pot at the particular outfitter I visited. I started my thru-hike stoveless but quickly realized I wanted to have access to hot food or a warm cup of coffee. Over 1000 miles later I still have it with me. I like how efficient it is. I have only purchased three cans of fuel so far. I like how fast it boils. I'm tucking into dinner while rocketcucks are still waiting. If I upgrade to a better (read: lighter) pack I'll probably go back to cold soaking, but I'm happy enough with the present arrangement.

That is why newer stoves use isobutane/propane rather than straight butane. The boiling point of butane at sea level is 30F, isobutane is 11F, and isopropane is 0F. As long the can is above its boiling point it will be pressurized. In any case, elevation has nothing to do with it.
I've used my isobutane/propane jetboil at 12k+ ft more than 100 times and never had a problem. When it is really cold I keep a fuel can inside my sleeping bag with me, which has never been any big deal.

It "works" as in it supplies fuel for the stove to burn, just like any other can.
What makes it "extreme" is a higher percentage of isopropane than other iso cans, which means more of it boils at a lower temp.

Pic proves the point; yes it’s cold up there, but it’s not so butt ass cold that a stove will stop working. Therefor elevation has nothing to do with a canister not working.

So I am encountering a certain problem.

Titanium is extremely conductive. Which is good for the flame underneath. But terrible for the sides of the pot in wind.

I'm finding my flame isn't the issue: it's hitting the pot just fine, even in windy conditions. But the sides of the pot get the heat wicked out very fast in even a small breeze.

I don't like the idea of carrying a windscreen as they can be a bit unwieldly, sharp edges, and cumbersome even if they are the lightweight kind.

Ideally I'd want a pot cozy, but all of them looks like someone made it up in their garage out of that shiny silver bubble-packing you find in home insulation ducts. I would have wanted a silicone cover or something more "form-fitting"

any ideas of what I can use as material? It seems I may have to make something up myself - nothing really comes up in searches for cozy's to buy except 1 or 2 hits.

I got the Brs 3000t and the fire maple quick boil pot, but mine is macpac branded. The fins of the Brs slot into the heat exchanger bringing it closer to her pot than other stoves, this makes it boil very fast and protects it from wind, flame still blows sideways in wind but it still boils quick.

OP here I decided to buy the Soto Windmaster based on a few of the recommendations in here. I'm thinking of pairing it with an aluminum pot that has a heat transfer. I'd rather have more fuel/more fuel efficient setup at the cost of a few grams.

Seems like I'm in a tough spot since the Windmaster is a big boi if you want to stow it in a pot with a canister.

cut half length slits at the ends to connect it together, roll edge

I've got an MSR whisperlite that I bought at a garage sale for 1 dollar, and I bought it because a through hiker I know told me he used it because the fuel density was so much better he could carry a bottle of fuel and it'd last a long time and was cheap to refill in the towns with just regular gas.
I never actually used it though, I just use a pocket rocket because it always seems easier since I'm not through hiking.

Be careful with these, I had one and the metal that holds the pot fucking melted during cooking. I had been cooking for about 13 minutes on medium power. I feel like this stove is for those ultralight people that just boil water in 2-3 minutes then take the pot off the stove and let residual heat "cook" their freeze dried food.
So depending on what and how you cook it could be good or bad

The canisters get cold when you use them, so it has to be hotter than the boiling temperature at your elevation for the gas to keep coming out. At sea level pure isobutane boils at 18F. If the pressure is half of sea level, as it might be on MtMcKinley it boils at -19F.
