Just start out small. It’s okay to not be an expert or have real world experience when you start out. The more you learn and the more you step out of your comfort zone you’ll feel more confident. Go fishing, hike some trails, camp at a public camp site, hunt some squirrels in a woods patch that you can easily navigate out of. Just take it slow because you have all the time in the world and have fun out there buddy :)

Going /out/ by yourself carries less of a stigma than going to bars, clubs, events, and festivals in the city by yourself. And the more experienced you get, the more likely you'll start visiting less popular locations where there's less of a chance of running into the social hiking crowd.

Funny thing is I've done the latter before the former.

There's also less chance of anybody wanting to go with you, so bring fine with going on your own gets more important

Just go on Alltrails and find the closest trails and parks near you. They even have them in the cities and suburbs. Sure you probably won't find epic adventures but it will get you started.

there's not much info online where I live. And the closest trails are 1-2 hours of driving away, full of tourist traps where you can't touch grass before shilling out a few bucks.

Do what I did when I was stuck in the suburbs without a car: rent a car for the weekend (it's typically cheaper on weekends) and drive out to more interesting areas. Surely there has to be something within a day's drive from where you live.
