Always been a tent guy but I've got a 1 year old and 3 year old and I'm done sweating my ass off sleeping right next to them in a tent with a portable AC and generator. It's just not comfy.

I think I'm an old fuck and ready to go full boomer and buy this trailer. What do you guys think??

This shit has a double kids bunk bed in the back and bathroom. Even has a nice little kitchen and table to kick it when we are at camp. I feel like I'll have the poor man's trailer compared to others but I don't care. Only gonna pay $200/mo or so. Then there's fucking insurance and storage, I live in Galveston so I don't have a yard big enough to stash this thing...

Think it's a wise investment? These guys say lifetime warranty on everything. The AC breaks they replace it for free.

No. Let me do you a favor. Its not fucking worth it. Thats a money pit. You will get fucked on your warranty, if anything does go wrong, which it will, your RV is going to sit at the dealer or, god forbid, manufacturer for a long, long time and you will likely be paying out of pocket for repairs. This is one of the worst ideas youve ever had in your life and im telling you that right now. A more sound “investment” would be one of those mercedes vans outfitted to be a camper van, preferably the winnebago ones.

And, being in Texas you also have property tax. Storage will be much more than you think, especially if you want it covered and/or powered to keep the working bits from rotting out. Unless you park it much further inland it'll just be another possession to worry about come time to evacuate, however you could make use of it in those scenarios - accessibility will be an issue.

We had a pop-up camper when I was growing up, it always had some problem whenever we tried to use it. Alternating leaf springs breaking each year or the axle. Cables rotting out, ect, so on so forth. We had room to stow it on property, I'd never own one that I'd have to pay to store. Buddy at work is paying close to 200/month to keep his stowed properly.

I’ve seen it before in the Deep South but it’s not too common. Common enough to notice I guess. The summer temps are not conducive to tent camping, with low temps barely getting below 80F/27C. Highs are generally 95F/35C. And it’s crazy humid.

That $20k trailers going to be worth $10k pretty soon.

The only ones i can vouch for are the ones mercedes collaborated with winnebago to make. They are actually very nice and one of the only RVs id ever spend my own money on.

if you ever had sex and had children you would know toddlers are perfectly content to fall asleep literally anywhere and in any position without any problem
we took my 3 yo 1 yo and 3 month old camping recently in a gigantic 10 person tent. we used air mattresses. the kids had a fucking blast.

Someone was selling one of those a couple years ago used, very expensive but very nice looking.

Pro tip: if you buy used, scan the obituaries. Lots of older folks retirement buy these things and theyre usually well maintained and the next of kin have no interest in them.

unless you're buying a fiberglass clamshell trailer like a bigfoot, Casita, or scamp, don't buy one. I work at a campground and the normal trailers are nearly worthless after 15 years, and they usually have leaks and things breaking constantly. The fiberglass trailers are built to last and still hold their value after 20 years.

Aluminum trailers hold their value as well, but they're way more expensive to buy into.

Lmao, I take a white noise generator everywhere now that I’ve got kids. The noise is the last problem with OP’s set up (I’d be worried about air quality sleeping in a tent near a running generator, I’ve suffered from bad air due to nearby generators at festivals and stuff, you really want to be elevated if you’re camping near that shit).

Can confirm, I too work at a campground and have assisted in many on-site repairs. Junk. OP stay away from anything labeled "ultralight". Most have such poor construction the interiors wear out in 2-3 seasons of minor use. Lifetime warranty only covers items still in production, if say the awning breaks and is discontinued, the company may pro-rate a portion of a similar replacement but it's still costly. Just helped install an $1100 awning replacement kit on a 2019 trailer last weekend that the trailer manufacturer said the original was discontinued and offered a $1500 comparable model that they covered $400 on the "lifetime warranty". I agree that fiberglass shells or Airstreams and there counterparts are wonderful trailers, but the aluminum trailer buy in can be steep. Van based RVs such as a Sportsmobile (not including Class C RVs) are great, but can be pricey as well. If you convert a van or a bus by yourself you have control over the quality and repairability of the build. And you can build memories with your family while you build out a camper vehicle. Or rent as others suggested. Apologies for the blog post in advance.

I've done this for years. But the hotels IN national parks are now like $600 / night in the summer. Janky old hotels in the outskirts of towns are $60/night. It's wild.

I DO want a truck one day and rent a camper trailer, it really is nice to settle and chill in a campground, even if it's all maintained and basically a parking lot.

Hotels are nice and easy, absolutely. And let's you bounce from place to place a lot easier. Getting older, I find myself wanting to just chill at 1 or 2 spots over 3 days instead of hitting 5 or 6 scenic spots across a weekend

Why put yourself further from what you’re there to do? I tent camp myself for this reason, and if I couldn’t hack tent camping for whatever reason (choosing to live in an inhospitable climate, physical infirmity that makes an inflatable pad insufficient, etc), I absolutely would buy a camper instead of spending 2+weeks a year living in hotels and commuting to parks. A camper might be a money pit compared to a tent, but it’s a bargain compared to regular hotel stays.

Sure yeah you can find an old clapped out one for about $15,000, and need $2,000 into tires. Would need a LOT of insulation. Big metal boxes bake like ovens on the summer.
