If you're looking to get started cheap, get a medium or medium heavy fiberglass rod, like an Eagle Claw Crafted Glass or a Shimano Sojourn
and put a "baitfeeder" style reel on, like an Okuma ABF3000.

Thanks for the suggestions. Skid, I take it that a 1 piece is necessary for this kind of fishing, correct? At what point is a 1 piece rod defeated by a giant (8-10 ft) 2 piece rod? In the UK, they use those a lot for carp. I'm not arguing; I'm sold on a 1 piece. I'm just asking questions. Should I just get an Ugly Stik for now, or should I get one of the many Ugly Stik variants, such as the Carbon, Catfish, Carbon Catfish, etc. I've also been looking for another rod, thinking about trying out a 1 piece spinning rod in medium, and I was told to buy one of the Scheels house rods (obviously I was at Scheels). I'm on the fence on getting that or a baitcaster combo (was asking about it in the previous thread).

I've been thinking of picking up tenkara fishing. The area I'm in has lots of little streams mostly filled with panfish, so it seems like it'd fit nicely for what I'm likely to need. Does anyone have any advice on what gear to get, or whether it would be worthwhile to spend money on a proper fly fishing set up?

Been using fluorocarbon leaders tied onto braided mainline for a long time but some old dudes who catch WAY more fish than me use mono and tie straight to the mainline. Targeting trout and salmon typically. I'd love any salmon tips period, there's supposedly a huge run of coho this year and I haven't gotten a fucking nibble yet. I know I'm fucking up somehow but I'm at a loss to figure how.

Weeb cane poles are more portable than regular cane poles, but strictly worse than an actual fly fishing rod at fly fishing. You can do anything a Tenkara can do with a regular fly rod of appropriate size. OTOH, the chinky cane poles are like $10 so go knock yourself out.

Bonus points if you get one of those Bamboo ones that are $9 and people on Amazon can't understand why they are cheaply made, lmao.

After the third, I trimmed the tail. I enjoyed it more than Rebel's topwater popper, and I got the lure for $4.99 at a discount.

I'm pretty sure that 13 fishing and Lew's are subpar unless you're buying their higher-end stuff that's well over $100. granted it "works" but longevity is a concern. equal money spent on a shimano or daiwa will get way more refined gear.

While freshwater fishing would feel less proud of a state record caught using live bait vs artificial/lure? I think I would. I would still gladly hold my record, but I feel like I’d be prouder and feel more accomplished if caught on a lure.

I like Gamakatsu hooks, I use them basically exclusively when fishing live minnows under the ice (when chasing hard water walleyes, I fish a live minnow on a Walleye Wide Gap or an Octopus hook under a swivel and two tungsten beads with one rod and a rippin rap, buckshot spoon, perch talker, or other jiggable rattling lure on the other. The commotion of the jigging stick draws them in, but they almost always hit the live minnow.). No idea if you need that particular hook for your particular application, but it looks a lot like their walleye wide gap hooks and those hooks work well, so I don’t see why it wouldn’t be a good hook.

I jerked off while down in the creek today.
I found a little spot under an oak tree growing out of the bank where the rocks looked like a reclined bench.
The creek spirits must've been impressed by my load for I was rewarded with 6 smallmouth, 2 rock bass, and a yellow perch.

Not really, tbqh. Everyone stepped their game up on low end and mid tier rods when Dobyns came into picture. Now Dobyns sucks too. If a manufacturer is purposefully marketing to teenagers and "googan" cringe people, it's a big red flag.

The only major thing I think I'd need that I don't have is an air brush for painting but I don't know how much you have to spend to get an OK air brush. On Amazon they go as low as $30 or so with an air compressor attached.

I got one of the master series kits as a gift and it works fine for minis. Gravity feed though so paint capacity is limited, may or may not be an issue for you depending on how many bait you plan on pumping out.

When it got close and jumped, it created a lot of slack in the line which gave it the chance to spit the hook. Basically a rebounding force, like when you stretch a rubber band then let it go. The line has a lot of potential energy it it so when the fish jumps, it turns into kinetic energy and rips the hook out. The more the rod is bent, the more energy is stored up and acts like a bow and arrow. It's not uncommon, I've lost a few fish like that.
At least that's what it sounds like, I could be talking out my ass.

Why will a fish hit like that and then lose all interest in it?
I tried chatterbaits today it’s a paddle tail trailer and it’s gotten way more attention than T rigged senkos have been giving me, but didn’t actually land a single fish

Yeah, that describes it well. Also they could've just missed it. I've watched fish come in hot, bump the lure, and fuck off. Sometimes they'll just come up and nibble the tail of my softbaits, even bass, or short strike it. I'll feel a hard hit but not have a fish on the end.
The most annoying thing is when I'm in a creek pan fishing, crawdads will grab my minnows. It'll feel like a strike. Sometimes they will hold on all the way to the surface before letting go.
Fish do a lot of different things. They won't always just eat the bait.

Treble lures or single hook soft plastics? Bass can spit out those plastics real quick if you're not on the ball with the hookset.

if you're finesse fishing and not using light wire hooks, you're doing it wrong. you don't even need to react most of the time as long as your line is tight. the owner mosquito light hooks bend somewhat easily on bigger fish but they bend right back with pliers.

I live in Southern Chile... I've told the rivers and lakes around here are filled with rainbow trout and salmon and I happen to live in the middle of a sort of a fishing paradise. I've never fished, how do I get started? What sort of reel I need? Hooks? I've told all I need is a basic cane, some line and a "spanish spoon" (pic related)

A simple spinning rod/reel combo and spoons like you posted and inline spinners are great lures. White or silver is good, pink is good, chartreuse is good. I'm not doing a proper pounds to kg conversion but if you are targeting trout you'd want light line like 6 pound or 8 pound (3-4kg maybe? Iunno) and salmon you'd want a little stronger like 10 to 15 pound (5-7kg?) And either one should be fine with a 7ish foot medium light to light spinning rod (2.25 meters?)
Trout like water about a leisurely walking pace and salmon tend to like a little slower than that. Look for rocks, trees, deep pockets, under cuts, or any other structure or cover. The fish will usually yh either be just in front of it or just behind it, and cover water.

If you're just getting started don't shy away from trying baits. Everything eats, going with spoons like that you'll be partially relying on the trout's territorial nature and aggression to attack it. If you go for bugs or worms native to the area you're fishing you'll get bites faster and much more reliably in my experience. That said, seasonally if the trout are going insane with horny rage you can throw anything and they'll bite.

I had a great evening creek fishing. I went to my favorite spot and caught a big bass for the creek, and I caught my first spotted bass. My fish that I caught for my native tank last week looks like it has Ick. White spots all over its body and fins, still doing fine and all. I want to pour in picrel but my tank also has a really, really small salamander, probably a dwarf waterdog/mudpuppy.

I’m sick of not being able to catch fish. All I can get 90% of the time are nesting peacock and that’s only because I’m annoying them until they try to move my life out of their nest and accidentally hook themself. That’s not even fun.

I saw schools of largemouth bass and I threw whacky rigged senkos, T rigged senkos, T rigged crawfish, paddle tails, chatterbaits will all different trailers and colors, topwater frogs and nothing. In fact I even had a bass bump into my lure by mistake and spook itself.
Idk what I’m doing wrong. I work the lures correctly, I change up my speed, technique and lure often, I fan cast, I’ve tried at all different times of day. The only thing I can think of is the hi vis yellow braid I’m using on my baitcaster may be the problem. I’m considering switching back to mono or getting some better camouflaged braid. Yet I can’t imagine just the line color is causing me to get skunked 100% of the time… and yeah, I still consider it a skunk even if I technically caught a nesting peacock may as well throw a live shiner directly in its nest at that point..

A lot of people say tying braid directly to the lure doesnt spook bass but if it's hurting your confidence in the presentation tie on like 3ft of mono leader.

I have never used a leader but I will try it tomorrow. How heavy should my leader be? Braid is 20lb test equivalent size to 6lb mono. I’m fishing for peacock, largemouth, snakehead primarily so heaviest fish would maybe be the occasional 10lb snakehead.. if I can start catching anyways..

The heaviest spinner I use are 1/2oz double willow bladed for deep bass. The profile of a 1/4oz and 1/2oz spinnerbait or the same model are similar in their overall profile. Lighter spinners are usually preferred because you can control the depth better. The bigger spinners for musky I can’t speak upon though

Wild. I’ve lived in the Midwest my whole life and while chasing dinks in a creek with a Mepps # 0 is great, I fish spinners 5/8ths to 7/8ths of an ounce more than anything. If you’re not fishing shallow, the light ones have to be fished so slow they don’t work, and while you’ve gotta rip the heavy ones fast to keep them out of the weed line if you’re fishing them shallow, they work best when ripped, many times I want the spinner to blow out of the water if I fish it any faster. That’s how you get a pike to jump all the way out of the water when it strikes.

I do have some giant musky spinners too, and the rod I fish them with has a 42 IPT reel. Speed is a big factor when enticing large predators. If you wanna troll for BIG pike and not just hammer handles, you wanna be going 2.5mph and faster.

I do admit that it feels better to fish on conventional/baitcaster on bigger lures and fishing in deeper water. However, spinning reels work just fine. Conventional/baitcaster do feel a smoother and easier retrieve on bigger lure, especially when you make a lot of cast and retrieving them from deeper water. It's easier to keep track and control the depth of the jig in a baitcaster/ conventional as well.

I do anon, i recommend using bait plastics for their plastisol, its really clear, and doesnt get a lot of microbubbles, another option is Dead on Plastix, this one is also easy to work with but produces a lot of bubbles, what i do like about them is that they also sell a lot of different color options, and effects. I went on to catch 19 fish and my PB bass. That PB was caught with a hula popper, which makes it my first topwater catch. I got in at 4:30, left at 7:00, and spent the last 30 minutes exploring since I only stuck to two holes near the entrance. 19 fish is pretty good for 2 hours. While exploring this new section of creek, I came across what looked like a beaver dam in-progress, and I smelled this unpleasant smell similar to vinegar. I smelled it before while creek fishing, and my first guess was beaver piss because of the dam. Then, I came across a dead, decaying, half-eaten deer in the water. Gross! At least, I can take solace in it being eaten and not simply dead from the water; there are multiple sewage treatment plants and industrial businesses along the creek.
Originally, I was going to wait on getting a light or ultralight until next year because it is getting cold now, but now, I'm not so sure. I never do this well when fishing elsewhere than this creek. I'll also have to invest in waders.

The other was when I was groundhog hunting near this river and I heard this "KABLAM!" That fucking echoed off the hills. I hit the ground thinking someone was fucking shooting at me. I crawled over to the horizon with my shotgun and when I crested the hill I saw this fucking carry on suitcase sized beaver sitting on top of his dam. I was fucking confused and still kind of adrenaline pumping because I'm still thinking I may have been fired at. Then "KABLAM!!" I guess I would want to try a very small shrimp lure since the only fishing near me is saltwater and all the fish here like small baits in general.

Looks like a yellow jack to me. Once they're above a couple pounds, they're a really good eating fish, cooked or sashimi. If it's the only small fish in the area, I could see using one as bait, they're very common with a healthy fishery, but generally I'd toss it back.

I live way out in hawaii. The selection of fish can be pretty limited and all the locals fish with the exact same rigging and bait, which I've tried without a lot of success. Damn guys, I am fucking GOOD at dropper loop fishing. Went on the am half day yesterday expecting to go for bass, but I guess the bass bite has been shit in the mornings lately so they ran down towards coronado/imperial beach to a sculpin spot. Got 12+ of the little jalapeños and woulda got more if I hadn't kept switching to trying vertical jigging and stuff. It's funny watching the rental rodders think that dropping the sinker to the bottom and waiting is enough. It's a much more active type of fishing than they think.

For dropper loop fishing on a boat it's not so much moving the bait, but more staying in contact with the bottom and not having slack in your line. Also I always have at least 2 hooks and one has a live sardine on it. The fish usually takes the squid strip, but the sardine moves around a lot and acts like a dinner bell.

Caught a couple of nice fish today.
Ultralight fishing all summer made me forget what a nice fat fish felt like.
Also made me forget what having a zero sensitivity rod felt like. First time using a spinner bait. I like it because it doesn't get bogged down in the weeds like my other lures tend to do.

I love spinnerbait fishing. My favorite small profile is the Booyah Pond Magic, and for a full size profile I really like the Megabass V9. The zman diezel minnow is a great trailer that can last through quite a few fish too

I'm using some ancient 30 year old minnows that my dad gave me for the trailer. Not very durable, but I have a bunch of them and they were free.

I was thinking of buying a medium-heavy spinning rod for carp. The guy at Scheels told me to go with medium, but I've heard people online say a medium baitcaster is useless (might have been Skid) and that a medium heavy with 20 lb line is needed for frog fishing. I could easily buy a medium-heavy and change out the reel and return the medium, since the reels are identical.

Bought this little guy new (Pflueger precision x)
Didn't use it for a season, had the tackle shop service it (had been on the boat / grime)
Didn't use it for another season
Go to use it, and the drag won't cinch tight, I can pull (mono) line off it ~fairly easily with the star drag firmly maxed out. My only experience is with larger overheads on boat rods, that will stop anything taking line off it.
Disassemble (first time using youtube), apart from the (should be brand new) drag washers being soaked in lube that I cleaned up, everything appears assembled correctly, spool tension is set correctly, yet I can still peel line off by hand with star drag maxed.

Is this not a bug, but a feature on small bait-casters, or is something terribly wrong?

Has anyone noticed more and more people encroaching on your best spots? I usually go out on the lake everyday Saturday there isn't a game on or if it's too wet. (Even a overcast sky could quickly turn my $3000 Penn max ultimate bass raper 2000 into a rusted zebco). So when I finally got a chance to head out on a bye week, I was disappointed to see some kids fishing off inner tubes where my fish-finder prime ultrasonic locator always tells me they are. After a few passes at a little more than no-wake speed they got the message. Just wish bank fishers should stay off of the water, and better yet, at home.

Modernish reels have a maximum drag setting. They won’t bind completely up unless something’s fucked up on them. I don’t have a Precision X, but my Davies CC80 has a maximum drag setting of 7 kg, and it won’t lock up any harder than that, so you might be seeing something similar.

Oooh, I had no idea 'max drag' was a thing, every spinning reel / overhead i've ever seen could be set to zero drag.
When I google 'baitcaster max drag' I get tons of results, it seems this is a feature and not a bug. I can't find any specs out there on mine tho.

Thanks for the replies, I knew so little I didn't know where to start. I've been watching a few video by local fishtubers got some advice too. Might come again by end of month once I buy my gear. I found a nice spot driving around past weekend, gonna try my luck here. Small-ish river, good flow, water clear, there's a small stream flowing right into the river a bit behind the bridge.

Theoretically you can crank down a front drag spinning reel to lock up because the load on the drag disks is set by a nut on a thread, but you never should, because the reel will have a range of drag settings it operates correctly in and outside of those settings it won't be smooth, etc. Anything with lever or star drag has more design ability to constrain what the drag setting can be set to.
Many front drag spinning wheels also constrain how tight you can gorilla the nut on, but not all.

Honestly bro build a basic tackle kit from Walmart. When you’re first starting off with fishing it’s easy to get overwhelmed by all the different varieties of lures, brands, color choices etc and end up with a massive bill. Half the stuff you might not even ever tie on again or it gets snagged up and you lose it. Ultimately it all boils down to the fish you intend on targeting and what power rating your rod is. Walmart usually has a good selection of budget friendly lures and tackle.

Any Oregon/Washington coast anons here? I'm moving to the North Oregon Coast soon, and am looking forward to getting more into saltwater fishing. I'll be targetting surf perch from the beach, but I am more interested in jetty fishing for lingcod and seabass. I've got a couple 9' salmon rods, a 12' carp rod, and picked up some swimbaits. I know a lot of people use those big curly-tail jigs to. Any tips or tricks I should know? Best time of day, tides, technique, structure to target, etc.

Guess this is my new favorite variety of sunfish. As much as I love longears, these guys are real pretty.
The fish in my local pond are very nice. though the tannin rich water makes it kind of a pain to fish in. Practically black.

I'm in socal, but from what I understand the light tackle surf fishing is pretty much the same, just less croaker than us and bigger perch. Carolina rigged sand crabs or gulp sand worms in the breakers and 110 LC flash minnows. I usually have best results an hour or two before the top of the tide preferably at/just after sunset. For the rock fishing look up Asian shore jigging and sea bass/suzuki fishing. They have a lot of stuff that will be directly applicable.

I fish saltwater from shore in northern CA, for lings we like the berkley gulp grubs in 5" or 6" in the salmon red or nuclear chicken color, we rig it on a weedless texas rig using the gamakatsu "superline" hooks and with a 1oz egg sinker or 1 1/4 egg sinker. We like the "superline" hooks because they are a thicker guage so sometimes when you have to rip through vegetation like kelp or seaweed you wont bend your hook, or if your bringing up a heavy fish you dont have to worry about a weak hook. With this rig i like to cast as far as i can, let it hit bottom and do a slow retreave back as close to the bottom as you can, stop your retireve every once in a while, jig every once in a while, if you feel your lure fall into a deep hole let it hit bottom then start your retrieve again. A lot of times Cabezon and Lingcods hide in holes. Keitechs rigged the same way also work, for those i recommend the ones around the 4" range in green pumpking, black, or white colors. Also i recommend finding areas with hard bottoms, areas with a lot of big rocks in the bottom, you can catch them in sandy areas but in my experience they like rocky areas where they can hide and ambush. The rod's rated 2-4kg (9lb) and the reels rated for 10-12-14lb mono.
(Shimano APS aerplus 562 baitcast light line 2-4kg)
I tried to lift a 1kg (2.2lb) weight, the reel held up no problem without cranking the drag very much, but the rod arced to a point I wouldn't want to dead lift any more with it.
My local department store has picrel 10-20-30-50lb for ~$10, i'm thinking 20lb(?), with a 20lb leader, the mono on it looks like a birdnest waiting to happen. I've heard going even heavier with braid is good for bait-casters tho

The problem with light braid on bait casters is that it can dig into the spool if you strain it, and that causes a problem because it can hang up when you cast a line that far out next time. My caster rod (3-9 kilo rating), I have a .279 mm braid mainline (30 lb test Suffix 832), and a .35 mm mono leader (12 lb Trilene xt) that is twice the length of the rod (~4 meters) when I tie on a fresh one (it shortens as I retie, obviously). I use an FG knot to tie the two together, if you want to use a swivel, I suggest using a meter or less of leader.

It was my first time fishing the Lowell section but it turns out the riverwalk has access to some very nice spots. It's lit at night so a chill spot for soaking after dark. I've seen nice channel cats, carp, and pike pulled out of this section. It's above a dam so you won't find striper and shad like the section from Lawrence to the sea though. Realistically, soft plastics aren't the end of the world. They make up such a small percentage of overall plastic found in your average waterway.
I'm more concerned about fishing line and hooks. I find so much fishing line balled up in a bird's nest and haphazardly discarded anywhere I go fishing. Right next to some chip bags, plastic bottles, and a blunt wrap package.
I've been trying to ween myself away from the soft plastic devil, but his allure keeps calling me back in.

After reading around a bit I've found some interesting tidbits.
Z-man's Elaztech is "environmentally benign" as in they are neutral. They don't swell up when animals eat them and they float to the top of the water so at least at some point they can be retrieved(guess it doesn't matter if you break off on a jighead). Unlike other lures that sink to the bottom. Also they contain no PVC or SPL so they don't leach chemicals into the water. They aren't biodegradable though, but they aren't as much of a pollutant. Also, some other bait companies make biodegradable bait like Biobait and Lucky Johns. These baits are 100% biodegradable.
Also you can try veggie balls or power bait if you're really THAT concerned about it. Corn for bluegill is a classic.

I've been watching up on a couple videos for pier fishing and saw some people put egg sinkers on their main line before their snaps and leaders.
Something like picrel.
If I'm fishing lures where I cast and retrieve while giving the rod slight jerks here and there, is it better to put an egg sinker on the main line or to go without one?

It depends on the fishery. Pike are principally sight predators, but they have decent low light vision, and in turbid enough water, they have to find prey with other senses. I've caught pike in clear water on nights with lots of moonlight, and I've caught pike at all hours of the day and night in a river that's chocolate milk year round, but usually you'll have your best luck during the day time.

Crescent makes some great paddling yaks. I primarily fish out of a Bonafide P127, but I have a Crescent Crew I take my sons out on and it paddles like a dream. Think I'm gonna add a Shoalie for river fishing.

the most apparent thing to me isn't even that, it's the build quality. the hull is extremely rigid and thick compared to other kayaks, and the QC is very high. I've dropped it from shoulder height and hit things that would have dented other hulls, yet all I've got are scratches. It's pretty damn impressive.

The likely answer is that it’s fine for some and not for othered, but I don’t use soft plastics and couldn’t tell you which. I’m under the impression that you should never store plastics outside of their factory packaging, however, especially if you use more than one brand or formulation.

When I was a kid, I ruined a bunch of shit by crossing the stream, rather dumping a bunch of different plastics into a regular tackle box. (Plano 2 tray). After a week left up at the cabin, all of my plastics were ruined, all of my jigheads and spinners had been stripped of paint, and even the tackle box was melting into the plastic goop mass that had formed inside of it. We tossed the whole works (after rescuing all the weights and hooks and non-ruined lures) into the trash and at the end of the weekend, when we went to life the bag out of the can, it had melted the bag.

they're often fine if you don't mix it with other plastics, but most plastics get fucked up when you mix them. find out the hard way if you want, but keeping plastics in their originial packaging is the best.
