Hey /out/, I recently wanted to get into backpacking and all that. I've always loved hiking but am not sure my gear is suited for backpacking. I have a 40 litre vaude backpack like in pic related. Would this be enough for a one night backpacking trip?

Good for the summer, yes. For winter or cold I'd want at minimum 60l.

Yeah probably. There are a lot of factors that determine volume, mostly temps and type of insulation. Cheap sleeping bags take up a lot of room. The only difference between a short trip and a long one is good and maybe rain gear.

I've been doing one night weekend trips out of a ~30 liter with about 3 liters of added pouches. You give up some things for this (using a bivvy, 3 liters of water, very little food, a manually inflating sleeping mat, not much for clothes), but it's doable in the right environment with the right clothes. I'm probably going to go a slightly higher so I can carry more water, clothes, and have a real suspension.

I use a 55L pack for 4 day/3 night trips and could go longer if I wanted. Though I never carry water with me since I always camp near a body of water that I can filter from.

Even though I can pack small I have difficulty cutting the weight, and I'm also a weird size. I'm not OP, but as I get older fit adjustment at any pack size is becoming increasingly important whenever the load gets above 20 pounds.

ive never seen anyone with MOLLE on their pack actually use it for extra pouches. Its the biggest hallmark of a LARPer.

You can and should hang stuff outside of your bag. The pad, for instance. Or kettles if you carry them.

matter of taste if you want to fit all you´re gear snugly into the pack even during winter or if you let it hang/strap it and cover it all with the raincover
if i had to say something good about stuffing everything into the bag it would be that its way easier to sit on top of it when there is nothing strapped into it, you know like a rocking chair

this is my new winter day pack. daisy chains are good for holding snow shoes, ice axe, trekking poles. Ive been clipping on mesh mushroom bags bc its fall. has gear loops for climbing. feels like the utility of a tacticool bag but in a climbing pack package.

and this is my backpacking pack. had it my entire life and have put thousands of miles on it, lived out of it when homeless, treated it like shit and it wont die. designed by ray jardine, guys a wingnut, invented climbing cams and had a huge influence on the mass produced ultralight packs.

and sorry to spam up the thread but maybe more controversial, the rei flash 18 is a perfect daypack. $30, light, durable, simple, 18l, easy to find. top recommendation for someone new to hiking who might decide they hate it.

what do you want in a pack? how much weight are you carrying? mesh pockets ok? external pockets ok at all or more climbing packish. when people get picky about lighter packs they tend to make their own or modify existing packs.

I see these on sale sometimes. Is the fabric choice good? Anything you don't like about it? I have a bag ranging inbetween most volumes for whatever activity but ive mean meaning to get a dedicated alpine pack and these have been on my radar

Nice packs, I have one of these. It's comfort/balance is amazing. Great for strapping stuff too like a LARPer. I get a week out of it, light as hell.

I just use a deer cart to carry shit in. I don't see the point of a backpack larger than my daypacks/survival pack. The deer cart can go anywhere, off trail, up rocky hills, basically anywhere that doesn't need rappelling gear, there's little disadvantage to it.
