I don't prospect myself, but I just wanted to see if some people do it as a hobby. It seems soothing enough, and you make some profit out of it.

Don't waste your time with well known or popular spots, you'll get nothing.
The best untouched spots are on private land where the owner doesnt know or can't be bothered, getting permission is unlikely either way.

closest to what you're looking for OP is gem fossicking, which is basically camping in the savannah/desert 10+ hours drive away from any other humans and digging 1-2ft deep trenches hoping you find 1 or 2 gems worth a damn in a few dozen buckets of rocks
