Is the M65 superior to the modern fleece / softshell combo?

Maybe I'd be warmer in the modern fleece + softshell (probs not and I love cold and rain) but softshell's not water resistant (I can't wear a military poncho in thencity and umbrella's are for coats)

So, is it better? At least for the average Joe?

Softshell material is more water resistant than polycotton, or at least it dries quicker. Both need impregnation to be water resistant obviously. I don't know where you get the idea that polycotton is more water resistant than softshell.

That's the advantage of polycotton, it's more durable than pure synthetics of similar breathability. For mere function synthetic softshell material has it beat.
Also the classic field jacket has merit and I don't know why it doesn't exist in softshell material more often.

I was issued the M65 and wore it off and on over the years during the 80's and 90's. It was decent with the liner in winter but not nearly as good as a down parka. It would be better in a modern material. Still like the style but never wear it anymore and replaced it with a modern hoodie.

you might as well wear a trash bag.

the nylon/cotton ones are pretty good, but ECWCS parkas/liners are better. still, I waterproofed my M65 with nikwax and wear it pretty often in the winter.

At least by the late 90s nobody actually wore these outside of garrison. Everyone used ECWCS in the field, or winter weight BDU with various things under (polypro, M65 liner).
Most of the Euro field jackets are superior in design and fit. A water resistant treated polycotton shell has a lot of uses below the temp range where you'd use goretex, it's basically the mil equivalent of a Carhart jacket. They will hold up better to abuse than many softshells but the problem is you don't want to carry one of these AND a gen 1 ECWCS. Modern light hardshells change things - my current military shell is 18 ounces.

They are both shit.
The best combination is merino base + synthetic mid + nylon windjacket.
And another thin hunting or polycotton jacket over that for abrasion resistance.

Fieldjackets are for fashion.
Softshell jackets are for comfort when casual.
The problem with those two is that they are too thick, not permeable and sweaty, and dry too slow.

What I meant was softshell makes you sweat too much when doing anything backpack related or with elevated heartrate.
