Tent vs bivy

Which one do you prefer and why?
I prefer the bivy because it’s lighter and quicker to setup and put away, but I recognize that the tent feels comfier and cozier.
I used the bivy at low temp (-12C) and it worked fine, the tent keeps more heat inside so even if you go out of your bag you’re still protected but idk how big a deal it actually is.

If you are in Heavy Rain/Snow + Wind, you might as well tent up. Also a tent can protect you from insects if you’re in a place where that matters. But I run a net+bivy personally.

Tents have their application without a doubt, or they wouldn’t exist. But honestly the people that benefit from peace of mind or the comfort of feeling enclosed are an example of “ignorance is bliss” not that they are in danger, but rather they sense danger, and think a tent will help with that in any way. I’d personally rather know what’s coming my way than be trapped in a tent.

But where I am, Mediterranean environment, there are many months of the year that temps, wind, precipitation and bugs are all a non factor. And bivys are perfect for that. Just my two cents.

I have a DD tarp in case that I can set up in various configurations to protect myself, and it acts similar to a tent, but can’t be put up on rocky terrain due to the stakes not going in

I always hear this but I've never experienced it. I'm using an older goretex bivy for the MSS; are newer bivys made out of some non-breatheable material that traps sweat or something?

I do that anytime outside of summer. I put my mat inside the bivy so my sleeping bag can't slide off of it during the night.

Well that isn't a thing, so I can't explain it to you. Maybe you meant "clothing dew point", but I couldn't find that either. I don't think there's any magic involved, anon; you just use breathable materials and don't sweat like a pregnant nun. Are you using a contractor bag as a bivy?

Will wet out in the rain. It also won’t stop water permeating through it in the wrong direction as the humidity outside of your bivy will be higher than the inside of your bivy. Terrible choice for a shelter.

All I'm saying is there's lots of people in the US using bivys, and if all bivys caused such rampant condensation there would be more talk about it, or less use of bivys. Yes, gortex comments should absolutely be ignored, as the nature of breathable fabrics make them a totally shit choice for a shelter.

I have never found myself sleeping noticeably warmer in a tent vs a bivy, at least any 3 season tent. You are usually covered in too much insulation close to your body for your body to warm the air in the tent. Maybe with more people. It does provide a bigger shelter from the wind but in that regard I have always paired my bivy set up with a tarp. Even just a simple rectangle one is nice to just put a wind shelter up and provides that comfy spot out of the weather that is inherently missing from the bivy. The tarp is light enough that if you don't want it you just leave it in the pack. It also allows you to use a bivy that's less water proof (and therefore not a vapor barrier) and you just vent out into the tarp. I don't know why people feel like a bivy always has to be used by itself, basically just use it the same way I use a hammock and it's been great.

Try some alternatives. I tie off to trees, rocks, and logs all the time. As long as you can adjust tension with line locs or knots it's possible.

The answer is more complex then 'condensation is possible'. You are correct that condensation from transpiration is constant, but sweating and wet gear inside a shelter is also a factor. In other shelters condensation is often on the wall (double wall, no issues really) so it's away from your bag for the most part and has opportunity to dry with a breeze. It is possible that the conditions do not allow this to happen and the shelter remains wet. On the flip side though there are lots of conditions that condensation simply doesn't form in any meaningful amount. There are also many types of 'bivy' that range in types of fabric and airflow. And further it is possible to simply deal with a little condensation. A few minutes drying the bag out when possible is not a colossal deal breaker for using a bivy. The ability to slap down a complete bedroll does have advantages and it is possible to simply leave it home if the weather or season isn't right.

Bivy and tarp user, occasional tent.

Where I live you need open air to shed moisture since it rains all the time here, and a bear burrito just doesn't work for that well. You could add a tarp for rain, but the wind it comes in sideways easily enough and if you get a big enough tarp why aren't you just using a tent anyway at that point? Also peace of mind having that extra little space between the big critters that are around, yes I know a tent won't stop a mountain lion or bear, but it feels better.

Used a few separate bivys both 3 and 4 season. They have pros and cons.

All you have to really understand with Tents vs. Bivys is portability over comfort. You will almost always find a tent a more comfortable experience (changing clothes or checking gear in a bivy while its raining or cold is a nightmare) but if you want to travel light and fast, bivys will almost always be preferable.

My best advice is consider your situation beforehand and weigh whats important to you. Small creature comforts, or a lack thereof, can really make the difference between high and low morale.

Bivvy and Tarp if im below the tree line and a tent for above it, Tarp is great for 2 people/2 bivs and a dog. And so on, gives you a living space. In wet weather you can have a fire and generally be outside you biv but still sheltered instead of cooped up in your tent.
