I'm looking for a two person durable, light, waterproof tent to start backpack camping in the PNW. Anything not $400 fucking dollars?

Get the Nemo Aurora 2P tent, it's got a lot of head clearance, super roomy, sets up almost instantly, it's like $200. The only downside is it's a little bulky, but if you split the weight between two people you'll be fine.

Durston X-Mid. One of the best options out there. Most two person tents are pretty cramped with two people, but the design of the x-mid is a little different. I think the 1p is like $220, maybe $240.

I’ve only had negative experiences with nemo. zipper on mine blew out twice, it doesn’t vent very well, it smelled awful the first month I used it, the lines for staking the rain fly got frayed after first use. Just all bad, I had the hornet 1P and purchase it around 2016. Nemo is also massively overpriced for what you’re getting.

Weight is relative. On thru hikes my shelter weight is about 0.70 pounds. A 5+ lbs tent would be an unnecessary burden.

The full double wall version of TarpTent’s still weighs under 3lbs with the heavier aluminum arch pole, and is only $80 more, but still under the $400 limit

It’s neither bombproof, nor light weight, nor exceptionally spacious.
I would legit buy a Coleman tent over spending $300 on that Nemo tent.

Ofc headrooom is no concern to you, that’s understandable.
It’s the diagonal floor coupled with the offset pole structure (causing the ridgeline to be the opposite diagonal of the X) which gives it the headroom boost.
Sleeping on the diagonal of an A-frame like the Duplex would probably give you less headroom

as basic as it is, the milsurp F1/F2 two person tent is a pretty solid starter tent. kinda on the heavy side but as long as you ditch the metal poles for something lighter it ain't bad. mostly water proof right out of the box, ez to set up, plenty spacious for you and your gear it's kinda all you need.

I recommend the Kelty far out. The stargazing fly is a really nice feature and lots of ventilation so you won't get overheated when your pounding your girl.
I'd recommend getting the three-person if your girlfriend is like my wife and likes having a little extra room in the tent.

Just ignore the 110lb manlet, the weight of your tent should be the last thing considered when shopping for a tent. Capacity, durability, ease of use, and comfort are far more important than a few pounds saved in your pack.

No, the high route is a rectangular fly with a rectangular floor that is in line with the sides of the fly.
The x-mid floor is a parallelogram because it sits diagonally inside the fly.
Notice how far in the zippered door on the high route is from the trekking pole, and compare it to an x-mid with the netting right up against the pole.
This is how it being on the diagonal gets its extra head room, because it can take full advantage of the height of the pole.

Bingo. My sub-treeline summer tent is not my pulk-carried mid-winter Alaska tent.

OP did reference "backpacking" and so pack weight is a concern. The summer tent I often carry weighs under two pounds sans stakes (Ground Hogs). I can carry luxuries and still keep my base under 17 lbs, which allows me to take some fresh food and if I wanted booze. I'm usually /out/ 4-14 days although I've taken off 3+months several times.

Yes that’s exactly my point.
How the inner sits in relation to the fly is the difference.
Stargazer pitches like your photo have the poles a different location than when used with the fly however, which is weird considering the kit for the x-mid has a gromet in the strap for a pole tip, but isn’t being used for some reason in that photo.

Are you same fagging or are you just as retarded? The flys are nearly identical with regards to headroom. How they sit in relation to the ridgeline that forms between the poles is nearly identical as well. The x-mid is unique in that the fly is rotated (creating much larger vestibules); that’s completely immaterial to the height of net, or the nets orientation to the floor.

The X-Mid is better, and I hadn’t even heard of the High Route until after I bought an X-Mid.

Claiming the X-Mid has a unique design that results in more headspace is wrong; it’s not unique to the X-Mid. Claiming this design that results in more headspace is original is wrong; the High Route came out like 8 years ago.

Again, look at where the pole is in relation to the inner netting.
Having the inner sitting diagonally inside the rectangular fly allows the netting to utilize the full height of the pole, which is how it gets its increased headroom.
The offset pole structure isn’t unique to the x-mid or the high route, but combining that with the inner being on the diagonal is unique to the x-mid, and does in fact give it increased headroom.
It’s plain to see.

It was playful joke about arguing with someone on the Internet, which doesn't look like you picked up on. Arguing over the absolute uniqueness of tents is sort of pointless. Most things in the gear space are derivative, I don't even think Durston says any individual thing makes the X mid series unique. I don't think anything particular about the head space other than it can be very subjective depending on the cut of the fabric and shape of the tent, which might change where your head ends up. And if the Xmid creates more room near where a person sits or shapes the space differently that may be true. it's not worth arguing about it very deeply. The OP could be 6'7" and have no headroom or be 5'7" and have no issues in either.

I can vouch for Vango. Bought a Blade 200 back in 2016 and it's still in use. It's not the lightest, nor the most popular it seems but I've taken it bikepacking, used it at festivals and went trekking with it and it has always served me very well. Using only a single pole makes it insanely quick and easy to pitch and the color makes it quite stealthy.

I'm looking for a budget alternative to chinesium OneTigris. Every time so far I look at others and they sound good until you get past the first page of 5 star reviews and it's clear there are flaws out the ass for a premium price.
At the very least from what I can tell from actual use reviews OneTigris does seem functional and spacious with good ventilation, but I would very dearly like to jump to a non-chink maker that's even somewhere near in price.
I'm mostly looking for a nice teepee design, possibly a hot tent.

I got the MountainSummitGear 2 person tent on sale on Labor Day, for $110. It seems fine so far, I'm only using it in campsites and the backyard with my son. See if you can find that in stock.

Plenty of nice tents are made in the US, but that’s more of a premium cost by very small cottage shops

There is definitely a difference in materials and quality control between big name US brands and brands like 3F UL or CloudUp.
Most budget tents are clones of proven designs.
OneTigris is kinda unique in that they are kinda budget, but put out original designs.
It’s kinda hit or miss on if their design is good tho.
Whatever you get will probably be just fine as long as you use it in it’s intended way

I suspect that quarterdomes are the most cost-effective option but many trekking pole tents which are not dynema are also pretty good on price. The Xmid which has caused so much but hurt is 'only' like 300. That's pretty cheap for a reliable shelter given that some tents go to 1000+. Tarps are also a good cheap option which is hard to get wrong, if they work for you.

There is a guy in Britain that makes the Trekker? Tent which is an A frame, The vertical walls of an A frame are big help for useable space, and he does custom stuff. I ended up with a tarp and an MSR bug tent inner, same idea.

What are you currently using? I have a Lanshan 1 (XL/2021 "upgrade"). It's quite good. However with an 78" long, 4+ inch sleeping pad my head and feet sometimes touch the inner. I am also a single pole hiker.

I'm normally a hammock camper but my girlfriend was a fraid of sleeping alone for her first time backpacking and I couldn't find my old Kelty tent, so I went out and bought this Nemo Dagger OSMO 2P. It's way nicer than any tent I've ever had and light as hell, easily rivaling my typical hammock+tarp weight. I was super stoked on it, and they've got a pretty good return policy; I would know, the dog had claustrophobia and tried clawing her way out in the middle of the night, the repair ended up only costing $30 and 4 weeks.

I was super skeptical on spending $500 for a tent, but all the stuff I've gotten from Nemo so far is really solid. Prices are steep, but they've always been steep for good outdoors shit and especially now since the economy is royally fucked.

It rains a lot in the PNW. You might want to consider a tent where you pitch the fly first so that the inside of your tent doesn't get soaked...otherwise you would have to pitch a tarp first then pitch your tent under the tarp.

I don't like normal tents that have structural stakes and shit, the durston is cool bc you only need to fix it to the ground and put 2 poles in
but if I'm on the rocks how tf do i anchor it down?
and if I'm on the snow will the anchors hold?
will it collapse in high wind?

anyway I just use a bivy usually

Youd need deadman anchors if you can use stakes. Either buy them (it’s a small parachute-like sack that you fill with rocks) or improvise by wrapping a guyline around a stake and placing a big heavy rock on it. I’m not sure how well it would work for a non-freestanding tent.

Not OP but what do you guys think about the Snugpak Scorpion 2 or 3? I have an old as hell North Face LunarShip from like the early 00s or something and its probably getting close to needing retirement. I used it all throughout boy scouts and a while after and it has a busted pole on the front area.

Alternative is one of the boy scouts tents from my buddy who was a leader. Eureka timberlines from the mid 00s, some much older. They're pretty bulky and heavy though but I could get them for nearly free.

Anything I do I would pretty much be doing with my buddy or gf so it'd have to be at least 2 person.

Just get a sewing machine and make your own tent if you want something that's both high quality and cheap.
If you can follow a cooking recipe, then you'll be able to follow a youtube tutorial on using your sewing machine and then detailed instructions from ripstopbytheroll dot cum

My IQ is very average and I have no trouble with that.

Look, I know learning something new is a hassle, but sewing really is that easy and making your own gear is great, plenty of people do that. At least seriously consider that option.
