I got hired for AZCC but quit without finishing the season. After having worked other trail crew jobs it seems the industry consensus is CC's are kind of a scam-you're doing the same work as regular crews but for comically low pay (at the time AZ gave 300/wk for 40 hours of brutal work+living at the jobsite 5-8 days at a stretch). Plus since it's a "youth" organization they treat you like you're on a grade school field trip the whole time. Sex and drama happens but doesn't seem to be all that bad. My crew at least was all straight men. Politically the organizational culture was pretty liberal, as you'd expect from an environmental nonprofit. I didn't meet anyone outwardly radical on that particular crew but the broader trail/fire/ecology job dirtbag culture has a lot of earth-firsty eco anarchist types. they're chillers for the most part and often connected to cool land projects (off grid/permaculture shit etc) if that's your jam but obviously they won't take kindly to right wing talking points. My advice would be if you have manual labor experience already then just apply outright to federal trail crews or if you don't try to get one of the individual placement internships through ACE which usually pay a little better and offer more autonomy.

I was in the WCC, and as anon said above, I've heard that it's generally a scam. My crew was cool, and opened up a lot of doors for me when I was young getting into the field I knew nothing about. Washington also pays better than most of the other CC's, so maybe look into it, but there aren't as many dedicated trailcrews working up there. Very left leaning, and I've heard from friends that the crews now are full of bluehairs. Sex and drama for sure, although not so much on my crew.

Imagine everything you think it will be, then only retain about 20% of that expectation. youll be doing what people do on the side of the road for a quarter of their pay, camping in generally okay areas with people who dont know what the fuck theyre doing cooking for you, and the trail maintenance sucks unless youre running saws or youre pulling for the sawyer. Trail construction is pretty cool actually, especially when its more remote, unfortunately thats also when the fat fucks roll their ankles and the twinks complain. Just be in shape and in good spirits and find a likeminded buddy or three, you should be okay. dont think youre gonna leave the program being a lone survivor expert, they might teach you how to start a fire with a farrow rod at the very most, some knots for assembling the KP tent, possibly some "camp cooking" skills, but they mostly just let the people live and learn when it comes to food prep, and if you give everyone food poisining you just wont cook again.
