Section hiking, like week long backpacking routes, are much more appealing to me than through hiking.

Through hiking seems like it just becomes an annoying game of logistics, while shorter routes let you just be immersed in wilderness.

I'd start it in January so you can be out of the southern states before the hot/humid weather hits. I bet hiking through Virginia in the summer would be a bitch.

On the AT you pass through a town every ~3 days so just go to a gas station or something and buy 3 days of food. Its really more like 50 3-day hikes than it is 1 150 day hike.

I started in May and had no problems with heat, there were definitely some hot days but you get used to it. I would recommend starting either before or after the bubble (mid-march to mid-april)

There's very rarely sections that you go more than a couple of days between places you can buy rice and tuna sachets and shit or cross a road where you can hitch into town. Most I ever carried in NZ doing Te Araroa was 10 days and that sucked big shit, average was probably around 5-6 day food carry.

The sachets not the cans senpai although admittedly they are harder to find. You could still lump cans though, I walked the TA with a Dutch girl who was like 5 foot tall carrying 20kg base weight and she would pack cans and fruit and shit on top of that lol

Most people are using some kind of guide, with Far Out being the most popular (and AllTrails and Gaia being common as well). With that tool you’ll know exactly how far it is to the next place that has food, various water sources, hostels, shelters, and so on.

Other than that, it takes a lot of planning. When I did the Pinhoti there wasn’t a Guthooks guide, just a website. I was able to use that to make my own maps on CalTopo with annotations about resupplies. I think even before guidebooks people would do something similar, maybe just figure out where they could get to a town. I don’t think too many people just wing it.

Depends on the trail. AT takes no planning. You could be out there with no maps or info and the trail passes around info like the internet. It's pretty simple.

Some people mail care packages to post offices close to the trail. To me, this sounds like a good way to not only manage (special) food but also paper maps if you're like me and won't feel right without 1:24000 UTM topo maps for the entire trip.
