I want to DIG
Prospecting, gemstone finding, ore gathering, fossil finding, dino bone digging, shiny rock collecting, cave TNTing
Anyone have experience with this? Been watching channels and it seems fun but also good money if you know good spots. Price isn't an issue for barrier of entry.
I live in Michigan now but plan to move to Texas. I'm an ITfag and don't want to stare at screens all week but also don't want to homestead or farm and plain hiking is boring.
What are some cool finds you've all had?

I don’t know shit about Michigan. I’m from AZ which is largely exposed sediment. I’ve found thousands of Fossils and “Arizona Diamonds” over the years. Done a share of Gold prospecting. My long term is to get into radiological/Uranium and Thorium prospecting, as it’s also quite prevalent in my area. Best thing to do honestly is just get out there and get a feel for a variety of areas and do highly specialized research. Caving is also fun.

Thorium sounds cool but surely the government owns all the caves for that
One thing I've noticed is all the good youtube channels own the land they prospect on, or were given permission. And the public dig sites are for family activities and usually produce low yield cheap-but-shiny stuff.
I want to drive around cliffs and mountains with a good flashlight at night, maybe after a good rainfall, and see if I see any glistens in the dark. Or ground penetrating radar and get good at detecting geodes and nodes.

Uranium in its unenriched form puts out minimal ionization radiation. Thorium is pretty much safer. You just don't want to inhale dust but that’s more of a mine issue. You survive the Arizona heat by drinking a lot of water and staying out of the sun for 3 months of the year. When I was referring to Thorium and Uranium prospecting, I’m exclusively talking about government land. You’re allowed 10 pounds before you’re exploiting a resource. If I for instance, found a buttload of Uranium, I could stake a claim and start that process with the FS or BLM. You don’t need to go out at night to locate Quartz crystals and other shiny’s. Usually the sun will hit them right while you are meandering and you’ll see them. Another fun activity is Metal Detecting for gold Nuggets, but I’m still getting into that so I’m not exactly a source of information.
