i'm going /out/ and popping some cans tomorrow. it's finally warm and nice, i don't have to walk through snow, and i have a couple days off.

what's your bb/pelled gun of choice? favorite cans to shoot (it does in fact matter)?

fair. i shoot at tons of different soft targets with my pellet rifle. cans, bottles, those plastic varmint targets, even pine cones set up on a board. whatever i can find, although cans are 5 cents a target so they're really cheap

I have a umarex colt peacemaker which is pretty cool. I found soda cans filled with water were the most satisfying and the pellets would always go through. Tried soup cans with it but they always ricocheted off and kinda didn't do anything.

Not OP.. But as another anon mentioned, it's $5 for a tin of 500 pellets. It's currently around $5 for 50 plinking 22lr. 9mm is $300/1000 5.56 is $580/1000 .308win is $1/round 300winmag is $2.50/round Those prices are for cheap FMJ freedom seeds. It only goes up from there.

I have firearms for all of those listed rounds. I do shoot my 22s more than my pellet rifle. But you can't beat the affordability of pellet ammo or the rifle itself.

Crosman 1077 is a blast for plinking. Not as powerful as the break barrel guns, but I think they were like $50-$60 when I got it years ago, magazine holds 12 pellets and you get 3-4 magazines out of a 12g co2 cylinder. Probably 1.5-2 magazines with power to take out squirrels, and power drops off in the cold, but it feels like shooting .22 shorts from a semi auto.

Break barrels are the best IMO. I don’t like the pump ones because of how slow they are. I’ve also had a CO2 pellet pistol, which was alright to fuck around with, but I like the rifle because it can actually take small game.

i love the idea of the 1077, and it's cheap as fuck, but i don't want something that won't take small game. even my daisy 880 can bag squirrels with a decent pellet. so can my powerline 35 in a pinch.

i (op) went out and bought a $15 swinger target at walmart, it's the crosman thing with the 3 circles on it. the middle one is ~1.5" and i'm hitting it at about 30 yards every time with my daisy, which i was really surprised to see because i only zeroed it at 10 or 15 yards on a paper target. i was also running the shit cheap piranha pelleds, which are apparently very inaccurate. either the inherent inaccuracy of the pellets was canceling out my shit zero, or i actually did everything right and my daisy loves those little things. they are heavy and expand well, so it's not a bad pellet for it to like when it comes to squirreling. and they're cheap.

I have a Umarex (I think, its branded Ruger, but obviously that company's just using the name) .22 cal pellet gun. It is accurate and hits pretty hard. Puts squirrels in the skillet a thumps cans nicely. My all-time favorite is the Daisy Red Ryder 500 shot carbine I got for my 8th birthday.

the red ryder is nice for cans and whatnot, but it's only loke 400fps. if they could make the adult red ryder but with about 550-600fps i would buy one, lever action is awesome but the way they have it right now is so underpowered it's not worth it

cost per round, near zero maintenance (oil + cleaning pellet = g2g), far cheaper up front for variable pump guns and still cheaper for some PCP guns. they can be quite accurate and are usually far lighter than any .22lr as well. basically, this isn't a replacement for a .22lr, but a good practice aid that can still knock out small game and be thrown on a pack easily.

i am op. i also have a .22lr but i don't often use it because the rounds are so expensive to buy in any real quantity. 250rds of .22 is way, way more expensive that an equivalent amount of .177 or even .22 pelled

I usually take mine out at least once a month. I have a 10/22 and a Savage MK2 in a Boyds at-1 stock. I usually shoot 100-200rounds per trip. I like CCI standard velocity 40gr. I buy bricks of 500 for $50. I can get loose Remington golden bullet a little cheaper. But they're not as consistent and I get more duds. And I won't touch Federal auto match. That stuff is garbage.

CCI makes the best .22, next in line is Aguila. i like their super ultra turbo whatever copper plated hollowpoints, they cycle everything perfectly and i've never had any issues with them. they had a few failures to extract in the P17 i ran, but that's it. and it could well just be a florida man gun issue

Is $10 once or twice a month really that expensive? That's 100 rounds of 22lr. Unless you're just rapid firing with no purpose, that's a couple hours of plinking. That's less than a movie anon. Surely that's not too outrageous.

Yes, I understand that pellet ammo is cheaper and BBs are cheaper than that. But to say 22 is cost prohibitive is nonsense.

For shooting cans, probably the Daisy Red Ryder or the Daisy 499B.
For shooting pests and cans, the Daisy 880 like in your pic...at least, the way they used to make them.
For longer ranges and larger pests/hunting, most .22 cal pellet guns work fine. Above a minimum standard, ammo selection seems more important than the brand and model if you just need to hit minute of squirrel out to 30 yards.

I literally compete at a high level in USPSA, I like messing around with guns. But pellet guns will always have a place in my heart. I like walking around the desert with my Gamo Big Game Hunter, 1000 pellets, and my CCW pistol.

I use a pellet gun to cull squirrels in my backyard. Killing a squirrel with my .177 break barrel often requires two shots, even when the first hits the head or upper body. You probably *could* kill them with a CO2 gun, but it would take multiple shots and be inhumane. I already don’t feel good about my current setup because it doesn’t kill them as quickly as I’d like.

What kinda break barrel do you have that it's not killing squirrels reliably? If you have a .177 at at least 1000fps you should be good. Mines doing 1250fps and it kills anything with good shot placement and the right pellets. Are you going for the torso or head? I mostly go for the torso, the brain is too small a target for an inaccurate break barrel. Destroy the lungs, heart, aorta, etc and they die fairly quickly. Also I guess it depends on your distance to the squirrel. I usually shoot them no further than 20 yards, typically 15.

But yeah, c02, though possible to kill a squirrel, I wouldn't recommend it if humane kills is what one is after. Maybe with the right type of pellet, shot placement, and distance with the first 5 to 10 shots out of the c02 canister. I know the average ç02 rifle is doing 600 fps AT BEST.

My granddad had an old pump .177 in his garage, that was really fun to shoot. Was shooting it in his backyard next to all the pvc pipes and scrap metal when one of the pellets flew into a pipe and I heard this scratching sound. I assumed I accidentally shot some rodent or something so I put another pellet directly down the tube and called it a day
Nowadays when i wanna plink I just go for my ruger .22, but those oldschool pellet guns are fun

I can run through 100 rounds very quickly. But that's not why I'm going to the range. I'm usually there with someone else and we take turns shooting at targets, 10 rounds at a time. I'm out there having a fun time, not seeing how fast I can waste $10.
