Alright florida bro, I gonna go visit family in Florida in about a week. I plan to bring my reel + some tackle and just buy a rod and 1 week fishing license to do some fishing in Florida. I will be staying around near this area. I'm from the west coast so I have plenty of salt water tackle. I want to do a bit of chill salt water fishing from shore. I'm fairly experienced and comfortable with fishing
Any tips on a good spot to go to, what area is off limit. What would be good tackle and species to target around this time of the year???. I prefer surf/shore fishing over pier because pier is typically too crowded for my taste. I might even rent out a fishing kayak if you can suggest me a good rental and launch place in the area as I did plenty of Kayak fishing myself in the west coast as well.

Had a really good day on the water yesterday, the bluegill are sucking down hooks about as quickly as I can get them out there right now. Only downside to the day was the loudest family of niggers I've ever been around but I don't know if even caught a single fish. Maybe I'm petty for getting a kick out of that but I couldn't stand them. The gills fried up really nice, 10/10 table fish.

Go skyway pier first since they have full 24/7 access and 24/7 bait shops with live (usually) and frozen bait. They have rentals too but the rods/reels are pretty awful. No fishing license needed, but roughly $10 total for toll ($1.75 each time without sunpass) and pier pass ($8 + tax for since car + single adult, valid for 24 hours)

Otherwise, you're close enough that you should go on a charter for a half/full day trip at least once.

Also, just want to add there's absolutely no way in hell skyway pier south will be too crowded due to how long it is (10+ to drive to the end). The north pier can get crowded at the end but that pier is also much shorter. The only thing you need to worry about with pier fishing is snags due to tons of pilings off the piers.

I'm the guy who asked about fly fishing pricing. I bought the waders and boots today for just under $500. I think this will be a very comfortable setup. I got them both for 20% off, and the boots were inadvertently $30 cheaper according to the salesman and my Google search, so I'm feeling really good. The weather is kind of shit for the next few days, but I will get in the water as soon as possible. I also got a Daiwa Presso 4 piece UL pack rod on the discount, which they did not have in-stock. I'll have to go back tomorrow to get some bass and trout lures. My only problem now is whether I get the fly rod. It looks like it could be fun, but it's expensive. I have the money, but I don't want to spend like a dumbass.

Once you remove the heads, guts, and make for a really good meal. Just dip them in the breading of your choice and throw them in the oil. Some people like to filet bluegill to make nuggets but I think you lose a lot of the meat, and the work to gains ratio just isn't worth it.

Find a local fly shop and see if they sell a 6 weight echo lift kit, otherwise order it online. While you're there get an assortment of nymphs and streamers, a fly box, 7.5 foot 2x leaders, a spool of 2x, 3x, and 4x tippett, some strike indicators, some itty bitty split shot, and if you're feeling exotic and they have it I really like scientific anglers sonar leaders as a quick way to add a sink tip to a regular fly line. Bass, trout, panfish, smaller carp, and just about any other fish under 5 pounds will be on the table. That's not to say you couldnt bring in a 10 pound fish on a 6 weight but youd wish you had an 8 weight or more the whole time, and you might wind up playing the fish to death. Some people say a 6 is too heavy but that weight makes casting streamers and bobbers easier and a 4 inch bluegill will still bend it. I would compare it to a light power spinning rod. 4 and 5 weights are firmly ultralight, and an 8 is a medium light to medium spinning.

I've also had one tell me I should put back a fish that I was going to keep (because it was a "great sporting fish"). I kept it anyway of course because it's legal to do so and I wanted to eat it, which resulted in a dirty look from the catch and release boomer who undoubtedly wanted to take a picture with it on his flip phone.

The ozark trail ones do.

Putting holes in the ozone layer wouldn't actually make it warmer though, it would just allow more UV light to reach the surface and give you skin cancer. If you want to increase the temperature you need to pump gasses like methane into the atmosphere.

I'm thinking about trying some new lakes and rivers around me but don't know what's in them. They bite under ice, so they will always bite. Definitely not as voraciously. Warm is better for kids anyways. I've had a very hard time making it fun and comfortable for my son to ice fish, I don't get much time to fish myself let alone times to fish with him when it's perfect conditions. I think it's still worth the try though

I didn't buy a rod today. The manager and I talked for too long, and closing time came around. I think I will buy the Echo Lift as you recommend. The other rod I was considering is the Maxxon Passage, which, I'm told has the benefit of a better warranty and packs smaller. The manager is recommending that I get a 4WT. He says it won't handle steelhead, but I'd have to travel a long way for that anyway. the micro crankbaits are great. don't buy the minnows though, every single oneI've bought had the bill fall off, they were basically pressed in crooked with no glue. creme has abhorrent quality control, so try to inspect them before you buy them. most of the crankbaits had to be tuned via slightly bending the eye or they would swim crooked, but that's an easy fix. I've consistently caught 3-4lb largemouth on them in the spring/summer. panfish like them too but I would recommend switching to a single hook or cutting off at least one of the bends on the treble if you plan to use them for panfish, otherwise you will have problems unhooking most fish since they will get hook in the top and bottom lip effectively seing their mouth shut. can be a bitch to unhook them like that and not really ethical for catch and release..

Slightly larger, but still small and got a lot of big bass, was those Sebile Flatt Shads, I think the smaller size worked better. They’re heavy for their size so you can launch them on a UL, and they worked awesome for me.

Carp are hard on fly, you need to find one that's actively feeding and put a fly on its nose without spooking it. Bass are easy, just strip streamers around cover and structure.
Also you need flies that ride hook point up for carp so you don't immediately snag bottom. I worked out a foxy clouser variant that I call a backwards bug that seems to work well.

thgere's your first problem. fish dont tend to like big flat nothing. find a sand bar or a drop off or a point or a pier or a trough or something, anything.

you were kind of close and in theory you could catch a fish with that, but the fish you would catch like that would almost certainly bite it off immediately. i also suspect that youre not fishing it nearly aggressively enough for mackerel or bluefish or anything of the sort, though im not confident they were even in the area to be fished for by the lack of attention to the rapala.
go to the local tackle shop- not a chain store, a a proper local tackle shop, tell the person behind the counter that you're not from the area and you left your brain cells back home, and you want to catch a fish and you should be able to get pointed half way in a direction at least.

your best shot at mackerel or blues, if they're around, would be long casts and burning it through them to look like a glass minnow fleeing, they both have teeth and youd need wire leader, if they're even in the area. redfish usually aren't chasing glass minnows, they're usually more interested in shrimp, crabs, and mullet.>>2713214

half of these I never even heard of let alone know how tasty they are.

The safest fish grow fast and eat small things. In freshwater, this means Crappies. In saltwater, Mahi Mahi.

In salt, I would eat snappers before drum, and weakfish and sea trout before mackerel, but all of these are good choices if you don’t go after the jumbos. I would eat trout before bass and walleye before northerns in fresh, but modestly sized bass and northerns are also generally good choices.

I don’t know which fish called spot you are talking about. Most I know are smaller, safe to eat fish, but some aren’t great table fare.

In the Midwest, eating bass is very unusual. Eating walleye and perch, on the other hand, is very common. I'm aware that people eat pike and like it, which probably isn't too different. Walleye and perch are definitely good eater fish.

start with spot, theyre really easy to catch, clean and cook and taste pretty good. if you enjoy it then go for something bigger like red drum. i didnt see bluefish in your list but try those as well, theyre very easy to clean compared to something like a speckled trout.

Tons of people eat bass in the midwest, just not average suburban white people. Rural people and coloreds eat a ton of bass. Small mouth have a good reputation as table fare, and honestly largemouth don't taste any different when they come out of the same water. The bad reputation that largemouth have as eaters comes from people keeping largemouth from warm disgusting water that smallmouth wouldn't live in regardless.

Anyone ever gone Marlin hunting before? What kind of setup could you recommend? See a lot of charters trolling using fresh caught skip baits and pop lures on rods. Going to be sailing up the east coast of Australia to the great barrier reef for the next year or so and I see it's pretty much the best place on the planet to catch giant 1000lb Marlin later in the year. sealed bearings just mean that the bearings won't shit out from getting water in them. it's one less thing to maintain. water and sediment will still make it into the actual reel though, but it's easy to service once a year, just watch some youtube videos. if you do your best to keep it off the ground though, especially sand/dirt, that limits how often you need to service it. things like fishing in rain and getting water all over the reel also makes the grease get gummed up quicker too. as for the line, it's usually best to choose that based on what kind of presentations you plan to do. that usually means the lightest line you can get away with, but if you don't know... I'd probably just stick towards the lower half of the rating on the rod. if a rod is rated for 6-15lb line, just use 8-10lb. most of the 8lb and 10lb line is pretty damn strong to start with, and you don't really want super thick line on a spinning reel because it can get pretty unruly.8-10lb trilene xl is a good mono, 8lb yo-zuri hybrid is a more sensitive alternative because it has less stretch, but it's thicker per pound rating. it's plenty strong and if you play fish with drag you're not really gonna have any problems unless it's a toothy fish. you just want to make sure whatever line you have isn't so weak that it breaks before your rod can bend deep into the blank.

You can fish all year round now, and the only species that ever have closed seasons are walleye (which is april to may), lake trout, and lake sturgeon. With wind the best casts are with the wind to your back or in your face. The worst casts will be when the wind is perpendicular to your cast direction. Casting at a 45 degree angle will be half as bad.

Using lower diameter line also helps but when the wind is 15-20 mph its not gonna matter and you will be scoped out. One trick is to keep your line low as possible in the water, obviously if your fishing current this will hurt more than help.

What other anons have said and if you're using a baitcaster: feather it through the cast so the line is straight and not all fucked from the wind.

Heavier, aerodynamic lures are your best bet. As an example, a heavier kastmaster spinner just glides through wind like a literal bullet. When it's windy, I put down the panther martins and grab the kastmasters if I'm spinner fishing once in a blue moon for whatever reason.

This is really the part of fishing I think I struggle with. I don't really have any idea what kinds of fish like what kinds of bait/lures. Last year I just fished with a nightcrawler on a hook with a bobber, but I only caught small bullheads that way. I tried some soft plastic crayfish and minnows (they were just what was in my dad's old tackle box that he never used) but didn't get a single bite with them.
I'm really hoping to get some pike this spring. Any suggestions on what kind of bait/lures I ought to use? Gonna be bank fishing on rivers, of course.

Butchering on the lake is highly discouraged in Minnesota (and thus the BWCA) but is the recommended practice in Quetico Provincial Park on the other side of the US-Canada border. The Canadians have the right of it IMO and the fact that the Minnesota/BWCA policy has softened in my lifetime tells me that plenty of others agree. But don’t do it at the edge of the water unless you’re in a tarpon, cobia, and lemon shark filled Florida marina. The water body should be able to handle it unless it was overstocked to the point of becoming a poisonous body on its own. People braining and banking silvers (without taking them to a dumpster afterwards) is a public health threat. If it's large or flowing then it's probably not going to do any damage, but if the ecosystem is already stressed and it's a small body of water, then people dumping 10 rotting carcasses into it could be enough to kill more shit. The problem isn't one person throwing one dead fish back in, it's one person or multiple people throwing a bunch of dead fish in all at once. In nature, the fish wouldn't all die and start to decompose at roughly the same time, it would be staggered. Adding too much nutrients at once is a recipe for algae blooms and other bad shit.

Nice one. I use Owner Mosquito Light hooks for dropshotting. Most commonly size #6 but I have them in several different sizes. Once I figured out that a 2.5" Gulp Minnow and #6 hook were the perfect pairing that allows you to essentially only catch larger panfish and weed out the smaller ones, I haven't changed the formula much. I can't wait until the late spring/early summer when they're biting like crazy, hopefully I get some PBs. I mainly fish fresh water but occasionally I’ll go to some waters known to have snook and tarpon, some of these waters are brackish some are straight up freshwater.
But I never have any luck. I don’t want to use live bait unless I’m on a boat in the ocean or surf fishing. I used shiners once and had some tarpon but they spit the hook. I caught one snook off a senko worm.

What am I doing wrong? I’m using mainly plastic flukes. Some times I’ll have a snook try to bite last second before it’s out of the water but it always misses and they don’t seem to give a shit about slower retrieves or anything with pauses.
I’ve tried too waters, swim baits, soft plastic flukes, a rapala twitch bait, paddle tails. The closest I’ve come is on the plastic flukes. Same thing happened with a tarpon once a few months ago. I’ve caught jack on the flukes.

What lures should I try?
I really want to get a skiff or a kayak. At least then I could just have some live/cut bait on one line while using lures with another and still keep it moving and not be stuck in one stretch of land.

Every beach near me is crowded with people. I’d go on the pier but that’s hit or miss and I’ve usually only ever caught small grunts and sand perch plus I don’t want to go anywhere that Mr. Xoa Chang is gonna beg me to give him my catches.

In warm weather states, they can spawn 8 times a year and a 1 lb female bluegill will lay 20,000 eggs or so. Obviously anything can be over-fished, especially if people pound the shit out of spawn beds on a regular basis, but even up north where they spawn 2-3 times a summer instead of all year round, a lake will typically produce 5-10 times as much biomass in panfish as it will gamefish, so they are generally a more sustainable harvest. I feel better about taking out a friend and double limiting on crappies and sunfish (here that would be 80 fish total, 20 per person of both sunfish and crappies) than I do about keeping a pike over 30 inches.
My friends and I do a fish fry every 4th of July and to feed the whole group, we need about 100 9+ inch panfish.

In fact, the region the hatchery is in has the most spring creeks in the world. Rainbows are then taken to nearby creeks or brought to urban ponds like one near me.

I’m mixed about harvesting anything. I hate seeing some nig cane poling 100+ fish. Or a fat nigger walking the banks and putting a live shiner on a circle hook with 50lb test mono directly inside every spawning bass bed he can see and harvesting them all (over the bag limit with no regard to sizes). I haven’t see a bluegill in years, a bass over 4lbs in years. They’ve been overfished where I am, and replaced with invasive cichlids. The cichlids are more aggressive and spawn in different areas so the bass and other fish don’t get to eat them as often and don’t get as big. I can remember a time where I would catch absolute slab panfish/bluegill/sunfish and also regularly get 5lber bass. Now all I see are cichlids and the occasional small sunfish and any bass are closed to 1-3lbs.

I fish for everything but it used to be nice knowing if I couldn’t go out for snook that I could probably land a 5lb bass. I only eat fish from the ocean. I would consider freshwater if I lived somewhere else. I don’t think there’s an issue with feeding yourself or your family but what I have issue with is over harvesting, especially when it’s done by some absolute geek who’s never fished and just wants to feel like some le epic hunter primal guy who earned his meal just to be catching them in the above described ways. May as well cast net at that point… or beg another man for him to feed you his catch.. But if you follow regs then it’s fair game I suppose. Just don’t come fish within 15 feet of me and I really don’t care at the end of the day.

Which cannot happen if the fish are gone. Most people I know who harvest fish from freshwater are as you say. They don’t really know shit about fishing.
I got an Asian FOB buddy who keeps begging me to fish with him and I won’t do it because I know he’s keeping everything he catches. Love the guy, but it’s retarded (also unrelated he has a hot 4’11” wife and I suspect he’s a cuck and wants me to fuck her not doing that).
Shit they barely know different species and have zero regard for what they’re catching size or season or bag limits. None of this is to even mention how disgusting eating fish out of a freshwater canal in Florida of all places is, the meat tastes horrible and it’s full of toxins. I’ve met guys who have mentioned guy hooking a freshwater snook so they harvested it and they talked about how disgusting it tasted compared to a salt snook. So it’s literally just a waste of fish because some retard wanted to feel like an epic primal fisherman who hunted his own food in what’s usually the lowest skill way possible short of snagging or netting, just to have a shitty tasting meal.

Lots of people have dumbfuck opinions about the flavors of fish that they've never eaten. Largemouth is less firm than crappie, smallmouth is firmer than crappie, both taste just fine if they come from clean water. Largemouth will live in scummy little ponds where everything tastes like shit and this is where they get their reputation.
I don't eat big predator fish because of concerns about PFAS accumulation, but if a small (under 2 lb) bass takes my fly when I'm targeting bluegills or my jig when I'm targeting crappies, he might end up on the table, especially if the bite is slow for my target species. In cleaner waters where PFAS accumulation isn't a concern, I'll eat pike and smallies, but there doesn't tend to be much in the way of largemouth in these places.

Sports anglers also are incentivized to spread the word that their favorite target species isn't a good eater, because then fewer people eat them.

You aren't really avoiding PFAS contamination by doing this. PFAS are everywhere.
Do you wipe your ass with toilet paper? PFAS. Do you drink unfiltered tapwater or even rainwater? PFAS. Do you eat any kind of food at all? PFAS.
Just like microplastics, PFAS have become ubiquitous across the entire planet, in every ecosystem. They're in the soil, in the water, in the rain, and in every living thing that is exposed to them - which is almost all of them except maybe some extremophile bacteria in a hydrothermal vent somewhere.
Eating certain fish isn't going to make a real difference with regards to how much PFAS you're exposed to.

Use as light line as possible, preferably with a light or ultralight rod. Inline spinners are by far the most fun, assuming you are not fly fishing. Be sure to use a tiny swivel with these. You can always use a bobber and worm, but I don't think it is very fun.

I assume you’re the chang poster joking about snagging and that was in response to my posts above that (kek btw), but I see way too many people harvesting every single bass they can spot fish and it’s out of shitty water. It’s a simple fact that fish out of 99% of Florida's residential waters are shit quality. The people who claim it tastes good have never eaten anything beyond store bought tilapia and are just spicing it to hell to mask the natural tastes. That type of water is better left for sport. You talk on PFAS and PCBs but that’s not even the worst there is in these waters. Think stuff like leptospirosis. It’s just dumb to eat out of this sort of water. We’re not talking on the Everglades or a natural pond in a northern state or a creek/river. Man made ponds with sewer run off and canal systems, both usually full of trash and all kinds of shit.

You’re going out to fish for two specific species which for all I know in your area are doing fine no overharvesting. I’m talking about people going out harvesting anything and everything they can get from bass getting ready to spawn to carp to sunfish to turtles to ducks to dogs to swimmers. It’s the human form of a longliner but it’ll be in small water sources with maybe a few hundred fish. If Toby McNiggy takes 50/500 bass one day and then again a month later that’s 20% of the fish in that lake gone. Imagine groups of people walking the banks filling buckets with everything they can get during spawn and pre spawn. It cuts down on how many fish should be there. And the quality isn’t even worth doing all that. I would absolutely harvest some freshwater species if I lived elsewhere, but doing that here is straight up retarded on multiple levels

Last year about 40 of my dinners were fresh caught fish. It really really helps the food budget. I'm not poor, I have a good trade job. I'm just a miser that saves every dollar I can. 3 bluegills is 6 good fillets of fried fish. Perch are delicious but a little harder to target, same goes for crappie. Both crappie and perch have more fillet on their body for their body size than bluegill. You should also look into catfishing. They are downright delicious and super easy to catch. Go outside at midnight with a flashlight. Catch yourself a bunch of worms, toss them in a fridge. Catch a ton of bluegills and crappie the next day. Fillet them up for dinner and keep the heads and fins and guts, all the shit you'd toss out and put it in the freezer in a plastic bag. Go the next day with the crappie heads and catch 2 foot long catfish. One big catfish will give you 4 fat fillets of meat. Each one's enough for a meal. Freeze the rest and have food for the rest of the week. Fish up and down the food chain, that's the best way.

Right now where I am the water temps are still to cold for trout to be actively feeding. I haven't seen any signs of life besides small numbers of images hatching over the past couple weeks but temps are still in the mid 40s here. Pay attention to water temps and check your river has any USGS gauges that track water temps. I usually wait till temps are over 50F before I start really trying for trout. I have the best luck between 50F-64F.
