Mayapples not sprouting - did I plant at the wrong time?

I live in Connecticut, planted a bunch of Mayapple rhizomes in my yard on March 1. So far I see zero leaf growth.
I planted them near trees, under hedges, and under shrubs. Any ideas for why they're not sprouting? Is my soil just bad, or did I plant them too late?

They're perennials, if you only planted them a month ago they might still shocked from the transplant, especially if they were just pieces of rhizome stock. They might sprout late, or ride the year out dormant and sprout next year, or die - Ideally they'd have gone in the ground in the fall and overwintered.

what exactly is "rhizome stock"? The rhizome with grown out roots? Or the rhizome with no roots

approx what chance do you think they have of dying?

Rhizome pieces without fully developed roots. Sounds like you planted them in decent spots, assuming your soil is anything other than hardpacked clay I'd say they have a good chance of coming back next year, especially if the rhizome pieces weren't too small. They should have enough carbohydrates and sugars to stay dormant for a year while they establish.

Actually, most of these rhizomes had developed roots. They were delivered in the mail though. So is it possible the roots were already dead, and then they just started decaying, and then the whole plant rotted? The roots weren't floppy and limp (aka obviously dead), but they weren't super-fresh-crisp either

unrelated q: do you think it would be possible to grow mayapples in a constant 70F temperature room?

I think they develop their fruits in may? The plant is supposed to emerge before that I'm pretty sure...

If they were just like kinda dry, then they might've been greenhouse grown or fall harvested and stored until they shipped to you. They're out of sync with the season - if they were in the ground they would've already started growing small leaf buds by early March. Unless the sites you planted them in are particularly waterlogged they shouldn't rot, I think that they're still just shocked and dormant. Still optimistic they'll come back next year, just let em get used to the new site, re-hydrate and re-establish themselves

Pretty sure they would still senesce and go dormant after ~3months even in a 70 degree room, but not sure, if the lighting was controlled you might be able to grow em longer.

do they store them at fridge temperatures? 38F basically?

because of how they were stored before shipping you mean?

My question is more about whether a mayapple plant actually enjoys 70F as a temperature, or if they really require cool 50F weather to grow optimally
