How do you find good spots for dispersed camping?
In my state it's legal to set up camp on both state and national forest land, and I want to start because I am seeking solitude in the woods. But how are you supposed to find suitable places to set up camp? Just drive around in the forest until you find a place to park and go look for some flat ground where no private property signs are posted?
I've only been camping in "backcountry" sites in state parks, which have fire rings and water sources already. I know nothing about just setting up camp in the middle of the woods. How does one safely make a fire? Should I get some rocks and use them to make a fire ring and carry the rocks with me in my backpack? Is it better simply not to start a fire? How do you go camping?
