It is easier to use a spray bottle. Those don't put out much water. Mist the top and stir, repeat until it only feels slightly moist. Air flow can help prevent mold problems. Usually, old seeds that don't germinate or seeds that take forever to germinate are the ones that mold over. Add some heat to speed up the germination process to beat out the spores of the mold. 95F would be fine. I have mine around 100F in my oven and most germinate in under a day which is amazing. Then i remove them from the heat and plant. Pepper seeds take forever so my method won't work as well.

Nearly any light will work. Just get them close to the plant without causing burn issues. /diy/ does a fair amount of this sort of thing. Just don't sound like you're growing something illegal and the thread should do well over there. There's 420chan.org for that stuff.

Sounds like they are sensitive to high nitrogen. That causes most plants to grow more foliage. Radish greens are awesome, fyi. Can't believe a lot of people toss them in the compost.

What needs to be warm exactly? The soil or the air? I remember asking if a reptile mat would do the trick. Would it apply to this?

And yeah.. I have my pepper seeds sitting in a wet napkin right now. I haven't even set up my pots because pepper just takes so long.

I think it is time for something new. Something that better represents farmers and gardeners of 4chan (/ck/, /diy/, and /out/ it seems). These graphics have been used for 5 years now! That meme is long dead and many boards are much more "mature" than before.

It'd be nice if we had some original content that is easily recognizable as a gardening/farming thread that everyone can relate to. Something that stands out in the Catalog and has a few variations, but are generally the same. Post some OC ITT and see what we all think about it.

The soil. There are seed mats you can buy that gently warm the seed trays to the correct temperature. They are quite nice. I use the pilot light in my gas oven for germentation which is why its 100F in there. Alternate source of heat can be used, anything from placing the tray over the back of the coils on your fridge/freezer to the back of a CRT monitor/TV.

You may be able to put a low watt lightbulb in a cardboard box and set the seed tray on top of it and that's it. Just monitor the temps with your hands. They should feel warm, but not hot. Something comfortable for you would be comfortable for the seeds normally.

Pepper seeds are protected from water absorption and triggering germination with a thin film of some kind. Can't really remember without some research. Some drinks are pretty acidic and can be used. Coke, Dr, Pepper, Pepsi, are good acids that some people use for this. The only thing different between them is how long you need to soak the seeds for. Could be a quick wash or 30 seconds.

It'd be nice to have a few seeds with a few different methods used to see which is best and how long is best.

0.25 grams (about 30 seeds) for $2.29
1 ounce (about 850 seeds) for $7.99
1/4 pound (about 3,400 seeds) for $23.50

The last time I bought seeds from them it was carrot seeds, I got an ounce of each of several heirlooms and holy shit I was ending up giving seeds to everyone because I had no clue how many was in an ounce then (11k to 34k seeds!) An ounce for Cosmic Purple carrot seeds cost around $24 but can plant 24 one hundred feet long rows and give you about 2,280lbs of carrots!

Also, 99c packets are really iffy. Both in number of seeds and especially their viability. I've known places that set out seeds every spring that have dates on them from 3-4 years ago and their viability is total shit. That's just because their turnover rate isn't much and they think keeping the same seeds for years and trying to sell them is okay.

Cheapest way to get seeds is your local grocery produce section. When you buy veg and fruits, take the seeds and try them out. Sure some are gmo and some won't even grow any but it's worth the try. Start with things you eat. Strawberry seeds are a good one.

Personally, I bought seeds over amazon. I got a 17 pack of ferry morse seeds for 13 bucks on sale. It's 26 bucks right now, way overpriced so I wouldn't suggest that. I also recently had 2-3 orders buying via amazon from Hirt's Garden, if you buy 3 seed packs (or spend over 6$), you get free shipping. It's a pretty good deal. You can find some cheap ones for 1.30-1.69, pick 3 and you get free shipping. I bought some quinoa, egg plant and soybean --- you won't find these in your neighborhood stores.

Kmart, Home Depot and even 99 cent stores are decent places to check. Probably won't find anything specific...just the general stuff. I'd only get them if they were cheap for around 1.00-1.50

The only other place I have gotten seeds was a youtuber doing seed give aways. Recently praxxus gave away 5 sets of seeds for 10-20 thousand people who would send a self stamped envelope. So it only cost you two stamps and two envelopes (about a buck total cost). John Kohler from growingyourgreens did one last year with all the seeds he got from seed companies but you could only get one and the same cost of self stamped envelope. Wasn't worth the hassle for me.

This is how I save money on lima, turtle, and navy beans.

The trick is to look for recent shipments of organic dry beans. None of them have been treated, they aren't hybrids, and they're viable. Germination rate is slightly lower than seed beans, but not by much.

I can densely sow a 250' x 500' plot using a bag that costs me $3.

Canadian shipping costs are insane. Dealing with Canadian seed companies like West Coast Seeds and The Cottage Gardener always pisses me off. They regularly demand ~50% more than the cost of shipping, which is already high as hell.

The worst was a seed supplier north of Toronto who seriously expected me to pay $15 for two packets of $2.50 tomato seeds.

On the other hand, US seed cos. like Rare Seeds do bulk shipping to Canada at a $3.50 flat rate.

Until Canadian seed companies stop screwing customers, I'm happy to order from the States.

But those are not heirloom nor organic. Not being heirloom is the worst part though. And, as you say, some are GMO. But, because they are not heirloom there's a big chance the plant from those seeds won't grow the fruit you want. You have to make an effort to make sure what you are buying is what you want and will work.

So you're right, the seed you get most likely won't be very useful and you end up just wasting time fuck arsing around with shit seed.

You're better off getting heirlooms and learning to save seed. Would be both economically and temporally better in the long run to just buy and trade heirloom seeds

When people are starting out, they don't want to spend a sh!tload of money. Last year was my first year starting, I bought CHEAP miraclegrow from amazon for 6 bucks (2ftcu) SHIPPED. It had tons of pests in them along with knowing the fact that the run off would be not good for the environment probably. I grew a few seeds from the ferry morse pack and everything died because of ants farming aphids.

It's lots of trial and error as well as learning from other gardeners (for me youtube). Beginners should start out with cheap stuff, as they get better..they should invest in better seeds.

Zone 9a here in central california. I got most of my garden planted. No pictures, but I put in
3 eggplant
3 tomato
3 tomatillo
8 chilis
3 basil
2 parsley
2 zucchini

I've still got room for another 9 plants, but I'm waiting to see if my local nursery gets the chilis I want before I plant any more.

I'm also thinking of putting in a couple cucumbers, but I'm not certain if they'll get enough light where I want them.

Also I'm sad. I waited too long to tear out my summer crop and decided it was too late in the year for a fall crop. However this winter was so mild I probably could have kept a garden planted all the way into February if I had chosen the right plants and been dilligent.

This year I'm going to gamble and see if I can get three full crops in.

Spring crop will stay in the ground until late June. Meanwhile I'll grow the fall plants.

I'll put the fall plants in the ground in late July once the hottest part of summer passes.

I should have time still to plant some winter tolerant plants. If I'm careful I can grow food all year.

Another question about pepper plants. If I bring it inside during the winter when there is barely any sunlight, would it just die or at the very least go into some kind of dorment state and act like a houseplant? You can, but it needs some light. If you were to put it in a dark closet it would just plain die. Average room lighting might be sketchy. I'd give it *at least* a 5000k-6500k 100w equivalent CFL bulb on a timer. The color temperature is important. Alternatively/additionally, if you have a sunny window, that could be a great place to keep the plant.

Also, keep an eye out for pests. Indoors, pest populations can explode because they're lacking controls that would exist outside like predators and weather. If you see spider mites, I'd deal with them ASAP.

I've never grown anything and I want to start growing basil (or maybe some other herbs).

However, I want to try growing it indoor with lamps. Currently it's still a bit too cold outside and not enough sun, so if I get bored of indoor growing I'll move it to my balcony.

I got the idea of growing the basil in an empty computer case, 1/2 100W 5000-6500K CFLs at the top and basil at the bottom. If it'd get too hot the case has a place for a fan so I'd install a low RPM one.

A few questions though:

1) First and foremost, is it worth growing in a computer case? The area is small and I wouldn't be able to get much of a yield. I don't really care about having a shitload of basil but I'm wondering if it's just a waste for a small area like that.

2) What kind of lighting do I need? I said earlier that I'm thinking of the 1/2 100W 5000-6500K CFLs at the top, but I don't know if it's going to be too strong or too weak. I'm looking for something cheap. This is just a little side project I want to do.

3) Anything else I need to be doing? I see you guys with these really nice plants growing and I have no idea what I'm doing.

Should be fine. Do you mean 100 watt equivalent CFLs, which are like 23-27 watts? The 100watt CFLs are generally very large and $20-40 per bulb. You can definitely grow basil under them, but not something I'd tend to stick inside a computer case. I'd go 23-45watt CFLs in a computer tower if it's your first time doing that. Keep the lights close to the plant as it grows (make it so you can lower and raise them.)

Definitely include a fan or fans for airflow, and a place for air to exit.

There are some varieties of basil that grow fairly tight and compact. Greek columnar and boxwood basil are a couple of those types. Also basil can be pruned to branch out more and prevent quick vertical growth with little production. Pic is related, and a good thing to know for many varieties of plants in addition to basil. When you want to harvest, pick the stem like that and you're helping to prune the plant for extra foliage at the same time.

The stuff I've been getting from online at these >>278537 listed sites have had a 100% success rate. However, the 99 cent packets I've bought from the local store have something like a 45% success just germinating, sometimes the entire packet is a failure.

Pay 99 cents 4 times to get as many successful plants as a single $3 packet that gives 100% success for me? And, the $3 packet is heirloom so I can save seeds from it for as long as I can garden in my lifetime. While the 99 cent packets never mention heirloom on them and are usually F2 or if you are lucky F1. Saving seeds from these is a crapshoot for what you might get later on.

So, yeah, buying more expensive seeds is a better all-around experience than cheaping out.

Gardening newbie here

When is the earliest that I can plant some seeds outside? I never have any luck starting seedlings inside, they either never sprout or end up dying.

I'm looking to plant some leafy veggies, specifically lettuce and mustard. The ones I planted in the fall of last year lasted well into the winter before ice killed them. When is the earliest I can plant these? Since the weather is turning warmer I'm eager to get started on my garden.

Earliest would be after the date of last frost for your are. For me that is mothers day. Better off starting indoors 6-8 weeks early and transplanting.

Lettuce is a cold weather crop so start that indoors, harden off and transplant as soon as it's not solid freeze.

It depends on the plant, but you'll usually want to try to base the timing on average last frost dates.

For mustard, the earliest recommended planting is generally 4-6 weeks before average last frost. For lettuce it's generally 2-4 weeks.

Thanks for the advice. I may plant the lettuce and mustard soon, since the last frost date isn't too far off where I live. May start some tomatoes indoors and plant them outside since I have had some luck with that in the past.

Last year my garden was little more than an area where I dug out all the grass, broke up the soil, and added compost. Is there some reason people like to build raised gardens? It seems to me like the way I did it worked just fine, and if I ever want to get rid of the garden all I have to do is just plant some grass seeds and it will disappear.

Hello again everyone.

I bought a 23W 6500K CFL with around 1800 lumens. I'm not planning on using it instead of the sun, but until it gets warmer and the sun is out more. The area that you're covering now with the light seems fine. With a 23watt CFL for seedlings, I generally keep them in a 1ftx1ft square under the light. Beyond that I'd be a concerned about them going leggy and/or bending (but the good news is google says you can bury basil stems similar to tomato.) It looks like you already know to keep the lamp as close as you reasonably can without actually touching the plants.

I'd also recommend moving stuff around periodically- doing things like turning plants, changing lamp locations or which plants are closest to the light, etc... Good luck!

There are many factors at work here, but essentially you can get 4 things from it:

-Carbonated Cider (low alcohol)
-Hard Cider (higher alcohol, but still pretty low alcohol, may or may not be carbonated)
-Vinegar
-Bitter water that tastes like the worst thing possible and you can't even begin to swallow one sip.

All of which are normal for homebrewing. Hopefully, you get the one you want, but you can help it along. Just put in some yeast if you think it'll go bad too soon. The yeast will turn it into low quality alcohol anyway (add more sugar to increase the alcohol content). The yeast will help colonize the batch and help protect it from further microbe infections.

FYI, there are homebrewmen threads in /diy/ all the time. Just search the catalog for a few. This is more of a /ck/ and /diy/ type of subject matter. Especially, since you didn't grow the apples yourself.

You don't still a homebrew, unless you plan on making spirits. BTW, keeping it in the fridge retards the yeast growth, so just keep it out of the fridge. Check it in 3 days, then once every day. If the cider is unpasteurized and doesn't have any preservatives(other than ascorbic acid) under you bed should be fine. I would recommend leaving it for at least a week, possibly 2, give the yeasts time to work. Keep it out of the sun, light can contribute to "off" flavors. Also try to keep it in a place where the temperature is as steady as possible. Rule of thumb is that if you are comfortable, so are most yeasts.

there are some other plants that i like, mainly moonwort but it appears that it would be impossible for me to grow it. it grows on some kind of mycelium. also it isn't native in my country so finding a wild one would also be impossible.

so that being said would it be a good idea to just take some spores of a fern in the forest or is looking for some of a grower? i know getting heirloom seeds is the best but does that really apply to ferns and other spore bearing plants?
but yeah i really like ferns and especially the more rare varieties like those adder's tongue and moonwort.

Seen people on youtube just buy cheap garlic cloves from the store and just plant them in soil, cheapest way and works. Same for jalapeno, you can buy a small amount for less than a buck per pound. Ok so these comes from 2 different seed pot sets. The one on the right was exceptionally dry for some reason. I had to add in water and crush it with hands. It's very soft now, though.

Dude, if you're into canning/preserving at all, make pepper jelly. It tastes awesome, and a good bit of the heat is subdued, letting the flavours of the peppers come out.

Either that, or start experimenting with chili pepper blends, or pickled peppers, which tastes pretty good too.

I say just water it into the pot, if it has good drainage, it's fine just don't over water and saturate it. The best way to water once it gets to seedling is to water the tray below the pot so it slowly absorbs it, rather than spraying the leaves which can allow fungus, mildew and other diseases.

It just needs some moisture not cake consistency. You want it to be fluffy not compacted.

I live in the tropics, the true tropics where there's no such thing as winter. There's a monsoon season but that just means buckets of rain--it doesn't cool down that much, asides from the water. Interesting question. Depends on the plant itself. Fore example tomato is grown as an annual, but in warm areas it is grown year-round but it does still have a rest period. Some other plants are bi-annuals which grow the first year then require dormancy and then flower & seed.

Hello again! My plants have been growing for about a week now.

I'd wait until the plants at least have a set of true leaves before transplanting. Your plants right now just have their cotyledons (baby leaves).

Here's my Basil and one of my Peppers. The basil is about 3 weeks old, the pepper about a month. I still have over a month before I can even think of putting them outside.

the top of the soil is naturally going to dry out first(especially in hot areas like the southern us), you want to worry about the root system underneath it though

The wheat takes a great amount of space for it to add up to anything. It's actually a terrible space to harvest ratio. 1 loaf of bread = around 10 to 15 square feet of land for wheat growing. That should help you plan out a proper amount if you've not already done so.

The first couple years does not matter much. You only need to cut any tap root off leaving about 2 inches of it. For getting a cutting started you can use willow water (water used to soak willow tree cuttings in) or root hormone. I normally keep the cuttings in sand in a clear container a couple inches across. Once I see the roots pushing against the sides of the container inside, I transplant it into the ground for several years and maintain the top. I plant it over top a large board/plywood peice so the roots can't go straight down. Every year I take a shovel and cut around the board to chop off any roots growing outside that zone. Once the trunk of the tree reaches the desired thickness, only then I dig it up and put it in an actual bonsai pot.

Never try to simply grow a bonsai tree in a bonsai pot from seedling/cutting to maturity. It'll take 100 years because the tiny pot retards the growth a great deal.

There's 100s of places online to buy fruit trees. Just google "fruit trees nursery" or whatever. The type of tree you want also plays a big part in the expense. Keep in mind many fruit trees need more than one tree to properly pollinate. Apple trees need more than one variety of tree to pollinate properly.

If you want, you could go on several gardening/orchard forums and ask people about getting cuttings from them. Some people are happy to do it, especially if they are about to prune their trees.

For instance, when I prune my fruit trees I'll shove a ton of the cuttings into the shore of my pond and forget about them (unless I want to make 100% they root). Whatever happens to root and grow will get transplanted, given away, or sold.

Any advice on corn varieties, preferably heirloom, that will do well with less water? I'm thinking a mix of Oaxacan green, Hopi Blue, and Bloody Butcher corns should work. Corn worms or borers or some such similar shit are a problem here, so no hybrid sweet corns.

Hi!
I'm starting a new vegetable garden, about 200 sq feet. Right now I'm clearing the weedy ground, just finished digging up a series of tree stumps. It's seaside, with a little poor soil over sand. I'll ad 2 cu yards of topsoil once clear.

My neighbor said I should treat the whole area with weed killer before putting new topsoil. I really don't like the idea of using weed killer, I'm trying to make wholesome food. But dang, these weed roots are seemingly endless, I think all perennial weeds, too, and lots of rhizomey weeds. Plus, the stumps I dug out are persimmons -- which self propogate! How much should I worry about the tree root remnants staying alive and turning into a bunch of new trees?? I was getting ready to refill the holes, then wondered if I'm shooting myself in the foot, if I should apply a herbicide to the cut roots before I cover them??

BTW been reading a neat book on companion planting and will share -- stragegy of planting flowers as well as vegetables, because they attract the bees/butterflies that will pollinate the crops! Neat.

Look up the Back to Eden gardening method. If you watch the movie be forewarned it is rather preachy but it is a great way to garden.

Pretty much says wood chips, get a ton from tree services. I agree as long as you have a big property and can hold tons and let it decompose into dark rich brown matter. Good advice but that would also take 2-3 years. Better to get a head start right now.

I would advise if you want to start right now, get a tiller. Rent an expensive one or there are even 100$ electric tillers (better have a long extension cord). Definitely till once then try to rake all the leaves or stones/rocks. Leave it for a month or so and till one last time. Then finally add your topsoil. Tilling just helps the plants break thru soil for their roots to spread.

There are no till methods like Masanobu Fukuoka's method but it really takes time and does waste seeds and doesn't give them the best chance. I guess tilling will kill some worms too which is not good. But healthy soil takes time.

I was thinking of ordering quinoa seeds to try because of their high protein. Does anyone have any experience growing this?

It depends on the maturity of the fruit you buy. For instance, jalapeno peppers are red when ripe. Those green ones won't have mature seeds. Same with green bell peppers. They actually turn colors when ripe, but are picked green and immature and have seeds that won't germinate.

If you have a source for ripe peppers, this will work. That's how I save seeds from one season to the next.

Your neighbor is ignorant and you should not listen to that kind of advice. Weeds will always grow, there's nothing that will stop them forever. If you are making a garden, you don't want something that will stop weeds such as a weed killer.

Just till them under and mulch them over. If you use herbicide you'll be harming your garden plants, unless you are planning on bulldozing the place over with 3 feet of new top soil to cover it up. In which case you'd not need the weed killer either.

Another part of companion planting is actually purposely growing certain "weeds" in your garden. Many "weeds" are just plants people don't realize there are tons of uses for including eating them.

Keep in mind that tilling seems awesome, but it isn't actually needed if you are adding topsoil. You can just mulch over everything.

Anyone doing maple syrup this year? The season is in right now. I started early this year in January because the weather has been mild (freezing at night and above freezing and sunny during the day). From 6 smallish trees I've been getting about 5-6 gallons of sap each fair weather day total. Just over the weekend, I rendered down sap and got a little over 2 pints of finished syrup.

I bought four 20 3/4" x 12 3/4" x 4" stainless steel steam table pans from a restaurant supplier to boil the sap down into maple syrup. They are thin, so I took the iron plates off my wood stoves and put those on each burner on the stovetop. Then the steam table pans with the sap goes on the iron plates. I can set the fire to semi-low and it'll simmer and steam all day and night until it is ready to become syrup.

Since I heat with gas and the stove is gas, I'm not spending extra money on rendering the sap down. All that heat stays in the house and the furnace runs less. I already have homebrewing equipment so my only cost has been the 4 SS pans. The amount of syrup I've made with them is worth more than their cost. So, I'm ahead by quite a lot now

Bought my rainbow quinoa seeds from hirt's garden last year. Started them in late oct/early nov, they grew pretty quick, they were doing amazing but I had 3 and had trouble with the roots tangled so I just put them in a 5 gallon pot. My advice is plant the seedlings separate or at least 5 inches apart then when you transplant, have at least 12-18 inches in each direction or only one plant in a 5 gallon. Most say they take up too much room to get a decent yield and would be cost prohibited that way but seeing how they are sold for almost 5-7 bucks a pound in stores, it's a good grain investment with all the amino acids which is rare.

Definitely try it. They seem quite resilient.

Am I being an impatientfag for expecting visible seedlings on day 3? I put a reptile mat under the thing yesterday and the soil is actually comfortably warm.I put a spoon in some of the pots and removed dirt carefully (to check soil condition) and some seeds have little tongues but only about 10%.

Well, I'm expecting the peppers to take their time but I have things like peas. Only one visible pea has a tongue. I remember last year when starting seeds in a wet napkin. There were tongues in about a day and a half.

What's the soil temp? Optimum temp for peas(depending on who you talk to) is 59F to 77F. If you get up into the 90's they can have serious trouble.

The pea temps is around 22c. They're not exposed to the reptile mat. Even then, the reptile mat makes the soil feel like.. 30c? It's not boiling. It's like walking on dirt during a hot summer day.

You can transplant the basil now if you want. (You're transplanting to larger containers and not outside, correct?) I'd usually wait till the next set of leaves come in a bit more if they're growing steadily, before transplanting to larger containers. If they don't seem to be growing further, you can definitely transplant. You could just do one or two egg holes and see what the roots look like and see how it goes.

Are you planning to thin or separate those multiple close together seedlings? If so, it's easier and usually healthier when they're smaller rather than larger. Especially if separating because the roots aren't heavily tangled up with each other.

I do a method where I put them in ziplock bags with a moist paper towel and keep them warm. The instant I see them start to push out of the seed I put them in warm soil. It takes a while for them to come up through the soil though.

They are not as pretty as the ones I grow in soil, but this was a great way to grow them indoors over the winter. I can only assume that thinning them out and me actually paying attention to the nutrients/pH would produce a better crop. I gotta do this more often and add some salad greens.

I tested it with sweet peppers, jalapeños and habs.
Sowed into seedling compost 4mm down, 18-22c in a propagator and sprouted slightly quicker than my dried seeds (10-20 days).
Many peppers were nomed last year...

Finding cheap sprouts is difficult where I live. The closest health food store is about 100 miles from here and if you mention "sprouts" to anyone local they look at you like you have 3 heads. All the local store seeds are treated with systemic pesticides and the only way to have sprouts for myself is to grow the plants and harvest the seeds. Unless of course I want to buy them online.

My first year growing tomatoes, a seedling grew last fall and I have a bunch of small tomatoes growing green for the past month. One of them is turning yellow/orange. They're supposed to be better boy tomatoes which are red. But it's also possible the soil I bought could have had random tomato in them? I wonder what's going on. From what I can remember they need lots of water (droseras at least), I usually kept their substrate wet as much as I could (It was sphagnum and Dicksonia sellowiana [Feds forbidden it's extraction later and now people use cocunut fiber]). Don't DON'T use fertilizer on any kind of carnivore plants, you'll surely kill them. IIRC droseras whiter and die after producing seeds (which are very very small and powder like) but you can plant them again without trouble. What climate are you in? Do you have a greenhouse? I kept mine is open year all round but I don't know if you can do that in the states.

Forgot to add that the Sphagnum is pretty much a must. But the plant you buy ( I usually bought them potted and received by mail, yeah they survived.) will have a bit of sphagnum in their substrate and that thing grows quickly. Or you can buy like a kilo of it for dirty cheap anywhere.

Honestly, I don't have much experience with oysters.. I've played around with them once or twice but I got isolated agar dishes from an online vendor and spread inoculated some spawn with that. My mother's has gotten so top-heavy that it basically tipped over. It's clearly still alive, it's been like this for a couple months.

She has no idea what to do with it so it doesn't tip over again, though. Just replant it in a bigger, heavier pot? Bury it deeper? Trim some leaves from the top? Something like that?

I also had some 20+ year old beans (my great grandma gave them to get daughter before she died, she never planted them, gave them to my dad and then I took the seeds when he left) didn't expect them to sprout but they have, I expect the leaves to be shooting up soon. I'm also trying to germinate hollyhocks, and recently spread some wildflower mix around the front yard that included lupine, bluebonnet, beach primrose, snapdragon, california poppy (and mexican gold subtype) marigolds, etcetc, list goes on! Hopefully they germinate soon.

It's because the pot it's in isn't deep enough. Alow forms large, thick, DEEP roots, it needs alarge pot to grow on. When you repot this bury it to just below the first leaf.

i grow aloe year round outside here in florida and theyre ok if they fall over as long as it doesnt break, the main trunk will just get a bit stronger/larger to support it.
id remove the lowest leaf and repot it in a bigger pot so its stable and so it can shoot out new runner plants for you
or if you happen to live in a warm area just plant it outside in the ground it will grow in sandy soil kinda like a cactus too
theyve been spreading by runner through my yard actually growing wild on their own so theyre nice to have and super easy to grow

ITS GROWING TIME

which means i can finally put some plants outside

I have a pretty empty backyard with dead and decaying grass, ants and a pear tree. I was thinking of making some raised beds out of 2x4's or something, maybe old pallets.

I'm thinking some succulents(south TX), well alot of succulents, some tomatoes, mint and other assorted herbs(potted)

I've stuck to pots since high school(my raised bed was just bricks separating some miraclegro soil) so I dont really entirely know what to do.

Do i destroy the grass underneath first?

I have some electronics knowledge(lel rasp pi's and arduinos) for the automating. so i got that part down.

It won't even tolerate overnight frosts. It's far too fleshy. I left mine outside on accident this year (we only get down to 25F here) and it completely decimated my 7 year old aloes in a matter of a few hours left outside.

I had one of those for a few years that I grew from seed. Pretty neat. Until I forgot to take it back inside and it frosted one night with some deep freeze storm that got to -10F. Lost everything that night. It was a single shaft about 2 feet long too.

i have had mine survive longer than that, had multiple days of frost this year in florida plus there was ice on the ground for 3 days
most of them ended up dying but a few did actually survive this winter
they usually survive no problem here though ive had them about 6-7 years before they actually died outside from a frost

sword ferns are drought tolerant and edible, they have little water storage tubers you can eat and they spread wild
mint works just about anywhere too but they can become invasive if you plant them in the ground

Thanks for your responses! I will definitely skip the weed killer and I am feeling better about the persimmon roots.

I'm exploring ideas to improve my "soil" which is 2-4" soil over straight sand. I'm realizing that water retention will be a problem. My neighbor offered some plastic to put under the new topsoil, but that sounds like a bad idea, I think it will never go away and how will the roots grow down? My dad suggested peat moss, though it's pretty pricey.

I was going to take advantage of a horse farm's manure, but apparently horse poo is full of weed seeds?! So it would have to be well-composted before I use it? Maybe good to get started for next year or something, but I am looking to get started right away without spending too much. Do you think that adding straight manure is a bad idea?

So I was thinking.. soil is sand, clay, and organic matter. Unused cheap clay kitty litter... Could I pour several bags over / mix into the sand before adding my topsoil? Would this help improve water retention? Thanks!

Some may be less than ideal (floppy) until transplanted. They may fix themselves to some extent, but you may want to supplement that with things like burying the stems when transplanting (depending on the type of plant.)

they should be alright if they get light most plants are really tender and will fall over easily when young
when theyre young theyre in a meristem stage which basically means theyre young/tender and havent gained the strength in the stem to keep it from falling as it grows. meristem stage is also the most optimal stage to eat a fair bit of wild greens, some will get tougher/more bitter etc as they get older(not fruits or nuts or grains though)
even if the plant falls over it will usually be alright, id only worry if the stem literally bent in half or broke
if it just falls over and keeps growing the stem will slowly toughen and be fine(really common with things like carrots/radishes)

it isnt necessary to do so though, but it can really help depending on how bad the plants are falling over or breaking etc

one last thing, keep in mind that some plants will stay in that young and tender stage longer than others so patience is really key(it worried me a fair bit the first time i was growing and had a few things falling over like that, they support themselves usually as they get a lil bigger though)
this is also the reason a lot of people will plant seeds in starter plants and wait til they harden off to plant in the ground/in pots

Well, the really big ones in that pic are pumpkins, which I assume are supposed to fall over after a while. The ones on the left are actually sunflowers. I know the risks regarding taproot and all that. The guys on right of pumpkins are cucumbers which fall over as well.

I guess the ones I should really worry about are the tomato sprouts next to the cucumbers.

Yeah, plastic can be a bit sketchy and generally not worth the trouble IMO. Peat moss is definitely a great way to improve water retention, but you're right, it can be expensive. Other options are perlite and vermiculite, which can also be expensive, or straight clay.

Don't worry about manure weed seeds. The composting process (if done correctly) generates enough heat to bake the seeds to death.

You aren't in high desert, are you? At least out here near Phoenix, the soil is naturally very alkaline, so the added acid of decaying pine needles is a plus. Wood chips and decomposed gravel are good alternatives if your soil is already acidic. Most plants like it acidic - look up the plants you're growing individually to see. There are soil test kits that let you check the pH of your soil (and cost much less than a full lab test). They're not perfect, but are a good start.

I would suggest spraying water with a small amount of baking soda to fight mildew/mold/fungus. About 1-2 teaspoon per gallon of water so if you have a small spray bottle then less than that.

If there are so many crafters wanting to join the farmers market and force their way in, why don't the crafters set up their own market at another park same or different time? That's what you should be telling the crafters. Farmers markets have fresh fruits/vegs and sometimes prepared foods -- its what many expect, not crafters. Crafters could easily make their own market place if there was such a demand which there probably isn't.

I'm about to start my first spring garden here in Chicagoland. I've got a mix of very hardy and frost tolerant plants and seeds (Broccoli, Cauilflower, Lettuces, Chard, Spinach, Kale, Celery, Onions, Carrots, Radishes, Strawberries) Everything I have read suggests planting whenever the soil can be worked or about the beginning of April. The weather here is so unpredictable though. Would I benefit from making some low tunnels? Or should I just go for it as is?
