Water temps are officially high enough in my area that bass and sunfish are JUST becoming active. Been going out daily since temps stopped hitting freezing at night and today's the first time I actually saw bluegill schooling and a couple largemouth hunting them in the shallows. Caught 5 smallies, 2 largemouth and a weirdly long and skinny perch in the hour I was out. Can't wait to collect all the free lures in the trees at the end of the week because now is when people are going to start throwing the big shit they always lose.

Is there any reason to venture outside of using swimbaits on a jighead or dropshot rig? I fish from the shore/jetties for halibut and rockfish. I find it fun, and easy to rig up.

I think from jetty/Rocky shore, I like dropshot/soft plastic on jig head the most. For the surf, I like LC110 better since it's easier to cast it far and have it run on the the shallow surf and it has better action than swimbait to get attention on the turbulent water of the surf

Depends on a bunch of factors including the humidity of your house. One way to preserve the fish for longer is to cover it in salted water before freezing. A nice big lump of filets in a gallon ziplock that's a big block of ice will last a long time for me, but if it's a quart of filets with just a bit of water, I try to eat it in a month or so.

Epochs ago, my folks had good luck with vacuum sealing what we caught out of canadia. We packed a decent size freezer, and plugged it in every chance we had.

Note that our freezer filled within 3 days, and survived the 1200 mile trip back and well into the following year.

Consider that, and doing some marinades if you do. We went for coho, halibut, rockbass and dungeoness crab. For the landlocked wanting to go deep-sea, ditch the dramamine and eat the seafood. Out of 3 trips, i didnt eat it and was seasick the whole time. The last one i did, and i became a roided out cpt. ahab on the bows.

Trout season is open again in California as of the 27th of April. I took a trip up into the mountains to a couple nice creeks. I caught 5 decent little rainbows(only took pictures of 3) the one in my hand has a different type of under pattern than in used to seeing. Usually it's a single row of large ovals. But this one had smaller ovals in multiple "rows"
I caught them all on my Echo Traverse with size 18 parachute adams. There were mayflies emerging, but it wasn't a full on hatch. The creeks are still moving pretty quickly, but the water levels are back, closer, to normal.

I have used Powerbait Honey Worms and cut them into smaller maggot sized portions. they work decent but Gulp Minnows are WAY better and come in small sizes also so I just prefer those these days. The smaller the bait, the smaller the fish you're generally going to catch. For example, I almost exclusively use 2.5" Gulp Minnows on a #6 hook when targeting Bluegills, and only catch ones that are on the upper end of the size range because of it. If targeting smaller sunfish species, I downsize the hook and the Gulp Minnow size. depending on how big the maggots are, you are mostly going to get small fish hitting it, of course an occasional big one can take it too but you will be harassed by dinks in the process.

I sometimes put some night crawler/garlic scent on a plastic but mostly I only scent spinners and even then who fucking knows if it does anything. I've had better luck putting artificial eggs on the hook tips of other baits than I have with scents.

It was closer to Mt Lassen than Mt Shasta, but still in Shasta county(Old cow creek). I've caught dozens on rainbows out of it, but that one caught my eye with the different parr marks. Old Cow Creek feeds into Cow creek which eventually ends up in the lower Sacramento. So some of them are potentially young coastal rainbows(steelhead).

How's the fishing in Maine? I've lived in Norcal for almost 15 years now and just picked up fly fishing last year. I've caught more fish in this last year than I have in the previous 15 years combined!!! Definitely late to the game!

you talking about normal bass style spinnerbaits or inline spinners? bass style spinners are somewhat weedless, especially if you have a soft plastic trailer on them instead of an exposed hook, but not foolproof. inline spinners less so, but with a single hook instead of a treble it's a little better. try looking for weedless spoons instead.

Went fly fishing yesterday. I caught 9 browns in the morning, which is fairly good for me, especially since I had trouble with my leader getting twisted and tangled. I went to a different spot in the evening. It has extreme amounts of sediment, almost entirely unwadeable. Someone burned a turkey. I don't understand why. I'm guessing that it was for fun, but I don't see how that would be fun.

I really don't get the point of all the hype around fishing. Just visit a place known to have fish and drop some explosives in the water. Explosives can be bought reasonably cheap, and will NET you more fish in less time and with less effort.

not that anon but while I'd imagine it could help, the majority of cast accuracy still lies with hand-eye coordination
kinda like having a massive racket in tennis; yeah you could get more ball on string contact, but if the form was bad to begin with it'll still end up off center (in-accurate)

It's not uncommon to use a heavier line with a leader, especially for bigger game with a hand line; to include thin ropes and gloves.
The biggest care to take is to just not wrap your line around your hands. Wrapping the line around your hands can make it so that the line won't slip, whi h turns in to a problem when it starts cutting you. If you can't get enough grip without any wrapping it's time for gloves and/or thicker line.
Honestly just a spool of 8lb mono as it comes from the store, a bobber, splitshot, and hook are all you need to harass bluegill short of bait.

Well, it's a 45 minute drive away (all of the fishing spots around me are, because of course I live in the one spot in my province that doesn't have lakes and rivers within a 10 minute drive) and costs about $40 in gas to get there and back (in my shitty 03 silverado). Skunked. But, no one else was getting fish other than this mexican dude who was targeting a specific species with a bag of what looked like moss. He had about 5 fish that he was calling "Tilapia" (they weren't tilapia) and he kept them alive in a giant ziplock. Dunno why but he left them alive in the bag to suffocate instead of stabbin' em

It flows into a mid-sized shallow lake (no deeper than 3 meters) that's always full of toxic algae blooms in the summer. The lake itself is good for ice fishing though.
The spot I mentioned earlier where I caught the 2 foot pike is actually the confluence of another creek that flows out of the shallow lake and into a larger river.
I might try fishing closer to where the creek enters the lake (or rather, the marsh around the lake). I tried it once last year but that was in like early April, so maybe it was bad timing.

I started out fly fishing on tenkara in small streams. I've since moved on to traditional fly rods. Tenkara is fun on very small streams, but are very limited, you're ONLY going to really use it on small streams. As for travel.. For getting it to the water without it getting caught and tangled in shit, just hold it so that the tip is behind you, not in front of you. Setup and consumables are comparable. Setup on both takes about the same amount of time. For tenkara you'll need level line and tippet. You won't replace the level line very often, but you'll be adding more tippet frequently. For traditional fly rod you can buy premade leaders or build your own.

Staying at a cabin for a week where about 10 years ago caught my pb bass (11lbs). Since the last time I was out here, the pond is now absolutely full of timber with visibility about a foot. I've lost a ton of lures, a couple cranks, chatterbait, even t-rigs and jigs are getting hung up. I've only caught about half a dozen in 3 days with the biggest maybe being 1.5lbs. Top water hasn't produced at all (tried poppers, frogs, buzz, ploppers), only thing I've caught anything on was swim jig and wacky worm which is pretty risky since you get hung up constantly on large timber. Though the bass I have caught all have interesting coloring, the look almost grayscale, no green just black. I'm kind of out of ideas. I tried to just do some panfishing but even they aren't biting. Doesn't help the weather has been shit with pic being the only nice day so far, constant rain. Any recommendations for heavy timber with limited shore areas for fishing? Most of it is inaccessible due to brush.

What is legally considered the activity of "fishing" in regards to having or not having a permit? Good luck! I use the Dragontail level line(https://a.co/d/8NRMkjN), but I just have a couple cheap $20 tenkara rods(Aventik and Goture). I've tried a couple of the more expensive ones and the $20 dollar ones did just as well. It cast just as well and caught and landed fish just as well. You don't get the cork handle, but it's honestly unnecessary on a tenkara rod. I did get one rod where the tip section was too small and popped out, but it was easily remedied with some UV resin, which I already had from tying flies.

Going fishing on Thursday. Not sure exactly where I'm going, just somewhere on the upper Sacramento. I was thinking about checking out the McCloud, but the upper half is still out of season until the 24th. And I'm not feeling a 2+hour drive to get to the parts where I can fish. If you can have more than one rod, I like to have one drop shotted out deep with bait and just leave it there the entire time I'm out unless something bites. I spend the time I'm there working lures on a second rod. When I was in NC I'd have several lines out, but here in CA were limited to two AND you have to pay for the privilege. I traced a drain back to a little pond that doesn't seem to have an exit, the drain pipe itself is really shallow right now and the pond looks deep in the center. I was thinking about throwing into the center and just sitting on the pipe for a while, but the issue with that is there's only enough space for that and if I sit there for hours getting nothing I'd be pretty bummed when I could have caught endless fish just twenty feet away.

Well, didn't catch anything, but it was a beautiful day and I had a great time just being out of town. I explored several spots I hadn't gotten around to. Managed to find OK access to the river in a couple and not so much in the others. I saw what may have been trails at one time, but there was no way I was getting through without a machete and some sheers. Sweetbriar had a nice spot, if I'd been there alone, but not enough room for two fishing. Castle Crags spot was still closed. Sims flat campground had several spots, mostly along Hazel creek, not the upper sac. There were a couple spots there on the upper sac, but they were still white water. Overall, the upper sac is still moving pretty quickly. Mt. Shasta is almost entirely covered in snow still. Gibson was my last stop. Maybe when I was 20 I could have climbed down to the water there. It did look quite fishy down there. But not today. Anyway...had fun, got out of the house, so a good day.

I think you should but do temper your expectations. Chances are you won't catch much if anything your first couple dozen times. Most people just use fishing as an excuse to be in nature.
Also check your state's fish and game website, you may have to buy a license, and there's lotsa regulations on what types of fish you are allowed to catch and when, as well a minimum width.

Well, we could give you all sorts of tips about fishing in general. But if he's catching fish where you're fishing, he's your best bet at getting a tip that will actually benefit you where you're fishing.

Like the other anons said, temper your expectations and check up the regs for your area.

If you have people skills, consider a guide or charter.

If you dont, read up on your regs. Your local game and fish office should have a pdf on thier website, but consider picking up a hard copy to keep handy. In my area, you can get em free from the g&f office or some of the local places. Some places even do a free fishing day, where no license is needed and some have fishing related activities you can opt into.

Then you can start looking into gear. Those combo kits you see at walmart n shiet are hard to beat for value, so one of those with some sunscreen and bug spray will get you going for around $50 or so. Try one with a spincaster because theyre super easy, pic related.

Learn some knots, you can tie em with anything to practice. Palomar is my favorite because its easy.

After all that youre good to go, just make sure you got your license, and follow regs in your area. G&f doesnt fuck around.

They come inside, but generally, they are shitty tackle trays. The best backpack that I know of, both for the backpack and trays, is one made by Evolution. The cheaper packs they make are perfectly fine, so don't feel compelled to splurge.

My fly shop wants $350 for an entry level euro setup. It's a nice setup, Echo carbon XL 10' 3wt, Bravo LT reel, Airflo euro line SA 2x sighter tippet and a pack of tippet rings. But not something I can afford on a whim. So I'll hold off for now.

I thought about just buying some euro line and trying it on my 4wt, but it's only an 8' medium action, so I'm not sure it'll work well. I tried short line nymphing the other day with floating line, but I couldn't feel contact unless I used a very heavy fly, like a bead head pats. I'll probably just stick with indicator nymphing for now.

Here's what you do. Get mono, be it Maxima or Amnesia, in bright green. George Daniel recommends that, instead of using a sighter, get a special pen (from Amazon, not SA) to mark your leader. It's some kind of thing for construction. Get the orange one. George Daniel recommends 8 lb mainline, but I've been using 15 because that's what I've got. You could use Gold Stren instead of the marker, but I'd rather have the pen. Use a tippet ring and tie in 5x fluoro.
I recommend a 3 WT euro rod for most people, at least I my area. I'm not sure how the C XL feels off tge top of my head. I'm going to test it this morning and let you know. I have heard it said that Echo rods other than the Lift are very vulnerable to breakage. I'm not sure if I buy that. When buying a euro rod, something around 10 ft is what you're looking for.

OK. I just took a look at the Carbon XL Euro rods, both 3 and 4 WT. I have a Sage euro rod, which is fast af. A 4 WT of that rod would be too much. Anyway, Bob from Red's Fly Shop has a good video explaining what to look for: How to Choose a Complete Euro Nymphing Rod and Reel Outfit. That's why I went with a 3.
Both Echo rods felt good to me. The 4 is just a little beefier, has a little more backbone without compromising casting. I would still probably get the 3 based on Bob. That guy is super knowledgeable and friendly. Support his shop if you guys have the chance.

Good to know. It's the 3wt I was considering. I like my other Echo rods. I hadn't heard anything about them breaking, the opposite actually. I'd heard they were remarkably reliable and had a fantastic feel, especially for the price range they occupy. But as someone that works in or near a fly shop, I suppose you'd hear a lot more real world feedback than I would.

For now though, I've got my 20lb maxima setup with perfection loops on both ends. And I already stopped by the fly shop to pick up the sighter leader before I read this. So I'll keep it in mind for later. I'll be taking my setup out on Tuesday or Wednesday to try it out. I'll report back after.

The truth is, fish care a lot less about some things that we obsess over. Just learn what type of lure/bait your target species like, learn how to rig it up, and get out there. The hard part is finding spots, at least for inshore fishing that I do. People are quite hush hush about it, but again, tackle shops will likely tell you if you ask for a good spot to start.

I just want to eat something....
But to be honest? Just going out into a stream in the rain with my hat and jacket and just casting for 2 hours really clears the mind. Better than most therapy.
