Bottom image here shows the histogram for your bottom image, and the image has my own adjustment to the tone curve, being how I personally would interpret that image on my monitor (the monitor makes a big difference, try it if you have 2 monitors). The histogram for your second image shows much more information across the range, but it still clipped in the highlights. Again, without seeing the negative this might just be a limitation of the lighting at the time the photo was taken.
At the end of the day that just like my opinion man. Also, I didn't realise how cropped your original image was....
Scanning and editing grainy images presents it's own challenge as the computer wants to see a range of values for really it's picking up on if there is or isn't grain.
