>>4148142> 3d pop is an optical illusion created by cues for depth. All photos are 2d, and you interpret them as 3d depending on viewing distance and lighting+composition playing with various depth cuesI don’t think many people mean that certain images literally look 3D like an i spy book or something. I think it’s shorthand for images having a realistic representation and rendering of dimensionality. This could be lighting and composition, sure. Maybe it’s a bit of barrel distortion. Maybe it’s contrast. Maybe it’s a little bit of everything. Either way, Some of the lenses I have do seem to have more dimensionality to them than others.
My Pana-Leica 12mm f1.4 is probably my favorite lens featuring this characteristic, even though i have like 3 lenses that overlap this focal length. Maybe “3D pop” is just a dumb term to express this characteristic. I don’t use it personally myself. It is interesting to discuss this phenomena though. Are there any interviews with leica / zeiss engineers discussing their decision making and process and if they are trying to achieve anything outside of technical sharpness?
