I won't say I'm a great photographer but I like the photos I take and I think part of that is due to being able to rely on my camera's meter unless I'm doing something like shooting into a harsh light, which of course will require some brain usage to account for. Olympus really thought it through with the om2n, for longer exposures (any speed slower than 1/60 I think) the camera reads the reflected light off the film to ensure it actually gets enough light/closes the shutter if say a bright headlight comes across the frame.
