I am considering my first video-centric camera after doing photography for several years. I am planning on using manual focus as I intend to be behind the camera, not in front of it. I also plan to mostly shoot on a tripod or gimbal, so sensor stabilization isn't a big consideration either. I plan on making projects in Academy Ration because I hate 16:9. I have narrowed it down to 4 options.
Canon 1DC is my front runner.
Pros:
>easily has the best looking output to me out of the 4
>8bit 4:2:2 file
>also a great stills camera
Cons:
>very expensive after getting it all rigged up for video
Canon C100
Pros:
>Nice looking image
>cheapest of the 4
>requires no rigging
>best battery life
Cons
>8bit 4:2:0 file limits grading options
Panasonic GH5
Pros:
>Cheap
>requires very little rigging
>open gate recording for higher resolution Academy image
>10 bit 4:2:2 file
Cons:
>m43 sensor
>Has the image output I like the least
Panasonic S5 II
Pros:
>Open gate recording
>full frame
>10 bit 4:2:2
>I have lenses that can be adapted to this mount
Cons:
>Most expensive of the options
>I like the output less than either of the canon files
Any thoughts? I'm leaning heavily toward the 1DC and C100. As I like the image character the most. 1DC for it's additional utility as a stills camera, the C100 for it's ease of use and requires no other purchases to get up and running. But I am very temped by the open gate recording and getting a much higher resolution square frame than I would get from the cropped 16:9 from either of the canons'.
Thoughts?
