Say you're doing a documentary, make them sign papers, give them 5 bucks or a restaurant
they may be like you but they're not you though, are they? So you were already going to need to speak to them as some point anyway
I did a thing taking pictures of patients of a door-to-door nurse, had her ask them if they were fine with the idea of someone coming to take pictures while she's there, and I asked them to sign papers authorizing me to use their images (even if the use was personal, it gives credibility and they'll be less scared of the images being misused)
If you know someone who knows your subjects or people like them, it should be easy by having him ask, otherwise you'll have to do it yourself
