I've been thinking about getting one of the metal ones to try since I always have a hard time getting 36 shot rolls to thread on all the way to the plastic reels.
If you're too poor to complete a set, you could probably make a tank out of bean cans or something. Just jamming the film in will probably leave patterns on it where the film was touching and didn't get enough developer. But maybe if you shake it good you can counter that.
