There is nothing wrong with shooting from afar and peoples back, as long as it conveys what you want to convey. All this non-sense about getting closer and shove the camera in peoples face is what the neckbeards here like to say and don't do it themselves just to show how cool and edgy they are. Think composition and not "am I the edgehard man now ?" and make sure you are getting the message across with your pictures.
Of course if you feel like you need to get closer to convey what you want, you should do it, but it won't make your shots better if the composition and the moment is not there.
The few tips I can give you is that you should try to shoot from different vantage points. All your shots seem to be taken with you standing straight up with the camera to your face.
>>2575432 This would have been a much better shot if the camera was on level with and perpendicular to the gun. Try to capture the movement as well, if you used a slower shutter speed in some of these shots you could convey motion on peoples arms as they protest or pan on a protester in other to isolate him or her from the background. Like on this one

You can send a message with your pictures without literally documenting what is happening. But just getting up close and in the face of your subjects wont make any of your shots better.
